Mandibular condyle displacements after orthognathic surgery-an overview of quantitative studies.

The repositioning of bone segments during orthognathic surgeries often results in mandibular condyle positional changes and can also affect jaw muscles, soft tissues and the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). Condylar displacements are considered as one of the factors of bone remodeling and further skeletal relapse. The quantitative approach is commonly used in comparative analyses and evaluations of the relationships between examined factors. The aim of this study is the overview of the current literature including quantitative analysis in the research of mandibular condyle positional changes as

Cervical vertebrae, cranial base, and mandibular retrognathia in human triploid fetuses.

On profile radiographs of adults, an association between fusions of cervical vertebrae, deviations in the cranial base and mandibular retrognathia has been documented radiographically. An elaboration of this association on a histological level is needed. In human triploid fetuses severe mandibular retrognathia and deviations in the cranial base have previously been described radiographically (without cephalometry) and cervical column fusions radiographically as well as histologically. Therefore, triploid fetuses were chosen to elucidate the cranial base cephalomterically and histologically. In

Cephalometric assessment of the hyoid bone position in oral breathing children.

MATERIAL AND METHODS: because of its anatomical and functional relationship with the craniofacial complex, we assessed the cephalometry of the hyoid bone position in relation to the respiratory pattern of these 53 female children, with average age of 10 years; 28 of them are nasal breathers and 25 are oral breathers. Horizontal, vertical and angular cephalometric measures were used in order to determine the hyoid bone location. The Student "t" and the Pearson correlation tests were used in order to compare the groups and the variables. RESULTS: We did not see statistically significant differe

[Cephalometric analysis in patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome: effectiveness of measuring skeletal morphology and soft tissue dimensions].

We assessed the surgical indication in obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) by comparing cephalometry between a responder group of uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP) and a nonresponder group. Cephalometric studies were conducted on 43 patients--42 men and one women--who required UPPP and underwent both pre- and postoperative polysomnography, and on 50 non-OSAS patients who formed the control group. Angles and distances were measured based on the Downs-Northwestern method as detailed in the reference cited. The comparison between the OSAS and control groups indicated anterior displacement of t

Orbital measurements in 63 hyperteloric patients. Differences between the anthropometric and cephalometric findings.

Anthropometric and cephalometric orbital measurements were compared in 63 North American Caucasian patients (24 males, 39 females) aged 3 to 29 years who had 13 craniofacial syndromes involving hypertelorism. The hypertelorism, which was diagnosed anthropometrically, was mild in 11 patients, moderate in 25 and severe in 27. The surface intercanthal width was larger than the bony interorbital distance in all patients (mean 12.2 mm). The differences were smaller in mild cases and larger in severe cases. The soft-tissue binocular width was shorter than the bony lateral orbital distance in 53 pati

Maternal serum alpha-fetoprotein measurement: a screening test for Down syndrome.

The median maternal serum alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) level at 14-20 weeks' gestation in 61 pregnancies associated with Down syndrome was 0.72 multiples of the median (MoM) value for a series of 36 652 singleton pregnancies unaffected by Down syndrome or neural-tube defect--a statistically significant reduction. The difference is great enough to form the basis of a screening test. By selecting for amniocentesis women with serum AFP levels less than or equal to 0.5 MoM at 14-20 weeks' gestation (excluding any of these that ultrasound cephalometry shows to have been due to the overestimation of gest

The mechanism of labor in nonhuman primates: A look inside.

While in humans, the flexed position of the fetus and its rotating course down the birth canal are well documented, in other primates the mechanism of labor is unknown. Despite the lack of comparative data, it is commonly assumed that the human obstetric mechanism is unique, and anthropologists have disputed when and why the transition to the modern human mechanism occurred. The purpose of this study is to establish the mechanism of labor in two species of nonhuman primates. The data in this study consist of a series of radiographs taken throughout labor in unanesthetized, unrestrained, sponta

Chin bone graft for maxillary alveolar cleft: indications and limitations.

BACKGROUND: Alveolar bone grafting (ABG) is an important step in the management of patients with cleft lip and palate. Choice of autogenous bone grafting is critical to achieve the goals of alveolar cleft bone grafting. This study was designed to determine which situations are suitable for obtaining bone from the chin in ABG. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In a retrospective study, the alveolar clefts that had been bone-grafted from the chin bone were selected from the archived files of the Oral and Maxillofacial Department, Mashhad University of Medical Sciences in 2004 to 2012. The patients were re

[Hard palate lengthening by palatal suture expansion: an experimental study in dogs].

OBJECTIVE: Scar contraction and lack of bony support for soft palate in traditional surgery of cleft palate are main causes of a shortening soft palate and its developmental deficiency. The wound and scar also lead to aberration of facial growth. In order to resolve these problems, lengthening of hard palate by transverse palatal suture expansion was studied. METHODS: Six mongrel dogs of 8-week age were used in the study. Amalgam markers were implanted in the hard palate of the animal. A NiTi-shaped memory alloy (NiTi-SMA) arch wire with a force level of 600 g was used to expand the palato-ma

Postnatal craniofacial skeleton development following a pushback operation of patients with cleft palate.

A longitudinal growth study of the craniofacial skeleton in 52 (19 males, 33 females) Danish individuals with cleft palates was performed. Thirty (13 males, 17 females) had clefts of the soft palate only or clefts extending into the posterior third of the hard palate. Twenty-two (6 males, 16 females) had more extensive clefts including up to two-thirds of the hard palate. The cleft was closed with a pushback operation at 22 months of age. Orthodontic treatment was included in the early mixed dentition. Lateral cephalometries were obtained at 5, 8, 12, 16, and 21 years of age. Twenty-four varia

Accuracy of Gonial Angle Measurements Using Panoramic Imaging versus Lateral Cephalograms in Adults with Different Mandibular Divergence Patterns.

INTRODUCTION: Gonial angle is an important craniofacial parameter providing information about symmetry and vertical dimensions of the facial skeleton. It can be measured on panoramic radiographs and lateral cephalograms. Reliable assessment of the gonial angle is challenged by the superimpositions associated with lateral cephalograms. The aim of the current study was to assess the precision of panoramic imaging in measuring the gonial angles compared to lateral cephalograms in adult patients with different mandibular divergence patterns. METHODS: Panoramic radiographs and lateral cephalograms

Fronto-facial advancement and bipartition in Crouzon-Pfeiffer and Apert syndromes: Impact of fronto-facial surgery upon orbital and airway parameters in FGFR2 syndromes.

A major concern in FGFR2 craniofaciosynostosis is oculo-orbital disproportion, such that orbital malformation provides poor accommodation and support for the orbital contents and peri-orbita, leading to insufficient eyelid closure, corneal exposure and eventually to functional visual impairment. Fronto-facial monobloc osteotomy followed by distraction osteogenesis aims to correct midfacial growth deficiencies in Crouzon-Pfeiffer syndrome patients. Fronto-facial bipartition osteotomy followed by distraction is a procedure of choice in Apert syndrome patients. These procedures modify the shape a

Cephalometric and fiberoptic evaluation as a case-selection technique for obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS).

In order to obtain relatively simple and useful parameters to estimate the severity of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS), cephalometric and fiberoptic studies were performed in 64 clinical cases previously diagnosed with either OSAS or snoring. Fourteen cephalometric parameters, 13 parameters derived from physical examination and 18 fiberoptic parameters were compared with the apnea index (AI), the apnea-hypopnea index and lowest SaO2 values. Statistically significant correlations were found between the Al and the shortest linear distance from the posterior line of the soft palate to the

Craniofacial modifications in children with habitual snoring and obstructive sleep apnoea: a case-control study.

Habitual snoring and obstructive sleep apnoea in children, which are frequently associated with adenotonsillar hypertrophy, may begin early in life and in relation with orocraniofacial features. The aim of this study was to detect the presence of early bone craniofacial modifications in young children with a long history of habitual snoring. Twenty-six habitually snoring children (mean age 4.6 yrs) were studied by nocturnal portable recording or diurnal polysomnography, cephalometry and orthodontic evaluation. A comparison of cephalometric findings was made between the studied group and 26 age
