Glass-ceramics have attracted much attention in the biomedical field, as they provide great possibilities to manipulate their properties by post-treatments, including strength, degradation rate and coefficient of thermal expansion. Squeaking in total hip arthroplasty (THA) has been observed only in hard-on-hard bearings, such as ceramic-on-ceramic or metal-on-metal. We report the case of a patient with a squeaking THA who had undergone multiple femoral head revisions combined with a composite ceramic cup (polyurethane, ceramic). Squeaking started 6 years postoperatively and acetabular revision was necessary to resolve the issue. The aim of this study was to look at the bone bonding potential of six formulations of a novel glass-ceramic system. Cylinders of the ceramics were implanted in rabbit tibiae for 4 and 7 weeks. Histological tests, both quantitative and qualitative, as well as push-out tests, were carried out during the bonding assessment. Bone growth was quite prolific, even at 4 weeks, as evidenced by growth up to and along the implant surfaces. Direct pulp capping with a hydroxyapatite ceramic in rat molars induced the formation of reparative dentin in the exposure sites after 2 weeks. In addition, foci of acute and chronic pulpitis were detected. After 6-8 weeks of application of the material partial or total necrosis occurred. The use of hydroxyapatite as a possible pulp capping material is discussed.

The practicability of the bioactive glass ceramic Ceravital in ear surgery was tested in animals. The histological findings are presented. Over the last 3 years implants of bioactive glass ceramic were used in humans. Prostheses for the total or partial reconstruction of the ossicular chain and the reconstruction of the bony wall of the outer ear canal were fashioned. We have conducted about 300 tympanoplasties and 60 total or partial reconstructions of the bony wall of the outer ear canal. The otoscopic and functional results were satisfactory.
