Structural validity of the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) for preschoolers with neurogenetic syndromes.

BACKGROUND: Psychologists routinely use the Child Behavior Checklist for Ages 1½-5 (CBCL) to assess challenging behaviors of preschoolers with developmental disabilities. However, the CBCL has not been thoroughly validated in neurogenetic syndromes (NGS). AIM: We investigated the structural validity of the CBCL in NGS. METHODS: Based on 152 preschoolers with Angelman, fragile X, Prader-Willi, and Williams syndromes, we employed confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) to evaluate the goodness-of-fit of CBCL narrowband, broadband, and DSM-oriented scales. RESULTS: CFA models largely supported the

Additional considerations for "checklists to guide the supportive and critical care of tuberculous meningitis".

Checklists are pivotal in the systematic assessment of critically ill patients, pre-operative assessments and for patients with multisystem involvements. Management of tuberculous meningitis is challenging due to prolonged hospital stay, multiple neurological complications like seizures, stroke, raised intracranial tension, stroke, neurosurgical interventions, multiple invasive procedures, health-care-associated sepsis, and ventilation. All these complications are managed by separate checklists to avoid treatment-related errors. The current manuscript aims to ensure completeness of inpatient c

A mixed methods study of challenges in the implementation and use of the surgical safety checklist.

BACKGROUND: The surgical safety checklist is an evidence-based global initiative designed to reduce perioperative morbidity and mortality. However, the expounded benefits of the surgical safety checklist have not been realized in naturalistic settings. This may be related to the quality of surgical safety checklists being performed in operating rooms. METHODS: In this explanatory, sequential, mixed-methods study, 2 trained observers used a standardized tool to record the compliance and quality of the surgical safety checklist completed during 51 surgeries performed at a pediatric academic hos

A Quality Improvement Intervention to Decrease Hypothermia in the Delivery Room Using a Checklist.

INTRODUCTION: Premature babies are at increased risk of hypothermia, core body temperature <97°F. Delivery room environment may contribute and lead to complications. The objective was to reduce hypothermia in babies <32 weeks of gestation in the delivery room to <40% using a checklist and sustain it for 6 months. METHODS: We created a delivery room checklist in 2012. Chart review established a baseline rate of hypothermia (<97°F). The team analyzed the checklist's effect on hypothermia from 2012 to 2018 and utilized numerous interventions to maintain compliance. Chi-square test and Fisher's e

The development of an evidence-based clinical checklist for the diagnosis of anterior knee pain.

BACKGROUND: Anterior knee pain (AKP) or patellofemoral pain syndrome is common and may limit an individual's ability to perform common activities of daily living such as stair climbing and prolonged sitting. The diagnosis is difficult as there are multiple definitions for this disorder and there are no accepted criteria for diagnosis. It is therefore most commonly a diagnosis that is made once other pathologies have been excluded. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to create an evidence-based checklist for researchers and clinicians to use for the diagnosis of AKP. METHODS: A systematic r

Classifying child and adolescent psychiatric disorder by problem checklists and standardized interviews.

This paper discusses the need for research on the psychometric adequacy of self-completed problem checklists to classify child and adolescent psychiatric disorder based on proxy assessments by parents and self-assessments by adolescents. We put forward six theoretical arguments for expecting checklists to achieve comparable levels of reliability and validity with standardized diagnostic interviews for identifying child psychiatric disorder in epidemiological studies and clinical research. Empirically, the modest levels of test-retest reliability exhibited by standardized diagnostic interviews

Temporomandibular disorders, trismus and malignancy: development of a checklist to improve patient safety.

Trismus is a restriction in the ability to open the mouth. Trismus can occur following trauma, surgery, radiation therapy, infection, inflammatory diseases, temporomandibular disorders (TMD) or less commonly as a result of malignancy. Following two cases of delayed diagnosis of carcinoma presenting with features of TMD to a specialist clinic, a checklist was developed for completion in cases of trismus, to alert the clinician to suspicious features suggesting a possible non-TMD cause. The use of this checklist, together with an increased awareness, has improved early recognition of atypical fe

Outcomes of the Evidence-Based Pitocin Administration Checklist at a Tertiary-Level Hospital.

Pitocin, a synthetic form of the hormone oxytocin, is a high-alert medication that heightens patient harm when used incorrectly. This investigation examined the outcomes of an evidence-based Pitocin administration checklist used for labor augmentation at a tertiary-level hospital. Data came from patient records. Using the Perinatal Trigger Tool, N = 372 clinical records (n = 194 prior to and n = 178 following checklist implementation) were reviewed. Checklist implementation resulted in statistically significant reductions in the duration of hospitalization (1.72 vs. 2.02 days, p = .0005), pres

Psychometric comparisons of the Pictorial Child Behavior Checklist with the standard version of the instrument.

The low level of literacy and lack of language proficiency possessed by some immigrants from low socioeconomic status backgrounds create communication barriers in the healthcare setting, thus interfering with their ability to access appropriate medical care and their subsequent participation in medical research. Adding pictorial descriptions to questionnaires appears to improve patient response when literacy levels are low. Psychometric results from 4 studies using a pictorial version of the Child Behavior Checklist (Pictorial Child Behavior Checklist, or PCBCL) to assess behavioral and emotio

Validation of the Hypomania Checklist (HCL-32) in a nonclinical sample of German adolescents.

We tested the psychometric properties of the Hypomania Checklist (HCL-32) in a sample of nonclinical adolescents, examined the association with current psychopathology, and tested if "hypomanic" adolescents differ from other participants regarding HCL-scores and psychopathology. A total of 294 students completed the HCL-32 and the SDQ, a screening for psychopathology. In adolescence, the internal structure of hypomania seems to be represented by a triple structure. The first factor "active-elated" is an indicator of symptoms related to energy and activity. The adult factor "irritable-risk taki

[Usefulness of the Child Behavior Checklist in the assessment of preschool children with developmental problems].

The diagnostic evaluation of developmental problems and behavior problems in early childhood is difficult and time consuming. This study analyses the usefulness of the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) as a screening instrument in a special clinic for children with pervasive and specific developmental disorders. 106 children under the age of 6 years were enrolled in the study. All children were individually assessed. Psychiatric diagnoses were based on parent interview, observation of the child, speech and language assessment as well as cognitive assessment and extensive neurological examination

Factor analysis of the aberrant behavior checklist in individuals with autism spectrum disorders.

Exploratory factor analysis (varimax and promax rotations) of the aberrant behavior checklist-community version (ABC) in 275 individuals with Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) identified four- and five-factor solutions which accounted for >70% of the variance. Confirmatory factor analysis (Lisrel 8.7) revealed indices of moderate fit for the five-factor solution. Our results suggest that the factor structure of the ABC is robust within an ASD sample. Both solutions yielded a three items self-injury factor. Stratifying on this factor, we identified significant differences between the high- and low

The Aberrant Behavior Checklist and the Behavior Problems Inventory: convergent and divergent validity.

This study was designed to compare and cross-validate two rating instruments [the Aberrant Behavior Checklist (ABC) and the Behavior Problems Inventory (BPI)] for assessing maladaptive behavior. The BPI assesses three types of behavior problems: Self-Injurious Behavior (SIB), Stereotyped Behavior and Aggressive/Destructive Behavior. The ABC assesses five domains including these three. We collected data on 226 adults, mostly with severe or profound mental retardation, from a medium-sized developmental center. Individuals with elevated BPI scores generally had higher ABC scores; however, the ext

Exploring patient interpretation of an orthosis adherence checklist: A cognitive interview study.

Upper extremity orthoses are commonly used in rehabilitation to reduce pain, improve alignment, and support return to daily activities. These benefits depend on regular and correct use, yet adherence is influenced by personal, environmental, and device-related factors. Although a checklist of adherence-related items has been developed based on clinician expertise, it has never been evaluated by patients. Understanding how patients interpret these items is essential before the checklist can inform development of a patient-reported outcome measure (PROM) to support adherence. The aim of this stu
