INTRODUCTION: Orbital exenteration is a highly disfiguring procedure which, although providing local control of invasive orbital malignancy also results in marked visual, psychological and social disability. We present three consecutive total exenteration cases over 1 year where all 3, including extended exenteration defects, were repaired by primary closure by way of cheek advancement. This technique may be considered where succinct management with minimal follow-up is required and maybe preferable if considering rapidity of rehabilitation with a short time to fitting definitive prostheses.

PURPOSE: To describe the surgical technique for and results of island pedicle cheek flap repair of medial canthal defects.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the charts of all patients with medial canthal defects repaired with island pedicle and horizontal advancement cheek flaps from November 2007 and July 2009. Patient demographics, risk factors for poor wound healing, diagnosis, operative findings, technique, and postoperative results were reviewed.
RESULTS: Twenty-five patients with a mean age of 61 years underwent reconstruction with island pedicle and horizontal cheek flaps. Basal ce

REASONS FOR PERFORMING STUDY: Extraction of cheek teeth (CT) by the conventional repulsion technique requires general anaesthesia and carries a high rate of post operative complications. Consequently, an alternative method of extraction, i.e. orally in standing horses, was evaluated.
HYPOTHESIS: The need for and risks of general anaesthesia could be avoided and post extraction sequelae reduced by performing extractions orally in standing horses.
METHODS: One hundred mainly younger horses (median age 8, range 2-18 years) with firmly attached CT that required extraction because of apical infec

Previously, we found that monocarboxylic acids undergo carrier-mediated transport in primary cultures of oral mucosal epithelial cells.1 In this study, we investigated whether carrier-mediated absorption of a monocarboxylic acid from the oral mucosa occurs in vivo. Salicylic acid was administered to hamster cheek pouch. At predetermined intervals, the concentration of salicylic acid in the fluid remaining in the cheek pouch lumen and the blood salicylic acid concentration were determined. The absorption of salicylic acid was saturable at high salicylic acid concentrations. Sodium azide, a meta

This case report documents an unusual cheek tooth (CT) displacement in a 3-year-old Arabian filly. The horse was referred to the clinic for loss of appetite and right-sided facial deformity. At admission, an oral inspection was performed, followed by a dental radiographic examination. The radiographs showed a very oblique vertical angulation (135°) of the CT 106 compared to the other premolars (107 and 108 CTs) (40°). In consideration of the clinical and radiographic findings, surgical extraction of the 106 CT was indicated. Due to the unique positioning of the displaced tooth, traditional ext

BACKGROUND: Advanced dental disease with associated osteomyelitis is commonly encountered in New World camelids (NWC). In the past, the treatment of choice consisted of extraoral techniques, with complications occurring in up to 70% of cases. With advances in the treatment of dental disease in other species, oral extraction may offer a less invasive alternative, possibly associated with fewer complications. This report describes the diagnosis, treatment and long-term outcome of NWC with dental disease.
METHODS: This was a retrospective study of NWC with advanced dental disease undergoing oral

BACKGROUND: Langerhans cell histiocytosis is a rare hematological disorder. Skin rash is the typical early feature, and bony involvement is the second most common presentation.
METHODS: We present a case of a 5-month-old female infant with left hemifacial swelling, initially treated for infection with antibiotics. However, due to persistence of swelling and new onset fever, further evaluation with ultrasonography, CT scan, FDG PET/CT and eventually biopsy was performed.
RESULTS: Imaging methods revealed mandibular osteolysis indicative of either osteomyelitis or histiocytosis X. Tissue biops

Proliferating pilar tumours, also known as trichilemmal tumours, are rare tumours that arise from the external root sheath of hair follicles. These lesions usually have a firm-to-soft texture and form small nodules, but may grow gradually, causing pressure ulceration or hyperkeratinisation. Because of this feature, care should be taken to differentiate proliferating pilar tumours from squamous cell carcinoma. An 89-year-old woman presented with a protruding horn-shaped mass on her left malar area, which was first misdiagnosed as squamous cell carcinoma and then revealed to be a low-grade malig

INTRODUCTION: Liposarcoma is the most common sarcoma entity and accounts for 17% to 30% of soft tissue sarcomas. There are several histological types including well-differentiated liposarcoma. This paper aims to underline the interest of immunohistochemical and cytogenetic studies to diagnose well-differentiated liposarcoma and to show the delicacy of performing a surgical procedure in the cheek area.
CASE PRESENTATION: The authors report the case of a 48-year-old female patient who presented with the recurrence of a right jugal mass initially diagnosed as a lipoma on the resection specimen.

Phymatous rosacea is a rare and severe form of rosacea that manifests as disfiguring soft-tissue hypertrophy and sebaceous gland hyperplasia and fibrosis. Most cases are surgically treated; surgical modalities vary, however, ranging from cryosurgery to conventional excision, and consensus guidelines for surgical management do not exist. The Versajet II Hydrosurgery System (Smith-Nephew) is a high-pressure, pulsatile lavage system. We present the case of a 75-year-old man with severe phymatous rosacea of the nose, cheeks, and chin who was successfully treated with the Versajet II Hydrosurgery S

Pleomorphic adenoma (PA) is the most common tumor of the salivary glands. About 90% of these tumors occur in the parotid gland and 10% in the minor salivary glands. The most common sites of PA of the minor salivary glands are the palate, followed by lips and cheeks. Throat, floor of the mouth, tongue, tonsil, pharynx, retromolar area and nasal cavity are rarely involved. Here, we report a case of PA of the cheek in a 42-year-old female. The mass was excised and the patient was followed for 3 years post operatively with no recurrence.

Equine dental disease has a high prevalence. Because of developmental, functional, and anatomic differences, limited inference can be made from brachydont dental pathology to that of equine cheek teeth. This article reviews the pathology of equine cheek teeth and their associated oral tissues, with specific information on periodontitis, pulpitis, maxillary infundibular changes, dental fractures, dental overgrowths, mucosal ulceration, and the regenerative capacity of equine teeth.

Peripheral caries of equine cheek teeth is a poorly described disorder and, in particular little is known of its histopathology. Histological examinations of decalcified sections of 21 equine peripheral caries-affected cheek teeth showed two different patterns of cemental lesions; including progressive enlargement of focal, flask-like lesions leading to breakdown of the adjacent cementum, and secondly; a more generalized flaking-off of thin layers of under-run, surface cementum. A thick layer of plaque and food material usually lay on the surface of affected cementum and also within cemental d

Lipodystrophies are a set of heterogeneous conditions resulting from defective lipid metabolism and characterized by adipose tissue atrophy. We report on a 54-year-old woman who presented at the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery with an increasing unilateral atrophy of her left cheek for the past 3 years. The patient's history showed that she had sustained a left zygoma fracture 35 years ago but did not have any other disease. According to the patient's wish, a correction of the left cheek was performed by autologous fat injection, which led to a highly acceptable postoperative resu

Sialectasis of Stensen's duct is an uncommon condition of the salivary gland featuring dilation of the parotid duct. Various surgical and non-surgical treatment modalities have been reported as treatment for Stensen's duct stenosis. In this report, a rare case of sialectasis with fusiform dilatation of the parotid duct is presented, which was corrected by a simple and easy surgical technique creating a new opening in the buccal mucosa.
