Daisybank 1983-1989. An audit of a residential home preparing adolescents for permanent placements.

This paper describes the evaluation of a small children's home, Daisybank, set up to prepare adolescents, who had been in care for several years, to live in permanent placements. The home seemed largely to fail in this explicit task, but appear to succeed in helping a majority of its residents make substantial progress in coming to terms with their deprived and disrupted lives. It provided them with genuine care and commitment, which they acknowledged and appreciated. We believe that the success of the home needs to be judged by these criteria, since for young people in mid- to late adolescenc

Diminished fronto-limbic functional connectivity in child sexual offenders.

BACKGROUND: Child sexual abuse and neglect have been related to an increased risk for the development of a wide range of behavioral, psychological, and sexual problems and increased rates of suicidal behavior. Contrary to the large amount of research focusing on the negative mental health consequences of child sexual abuse, very little is known about the characteristics of child sexual offenders and the neuronal underpinnings contributing to child sexual offending. METHODS AND SAMPLE: This study investigates differences in resting state functional connectivity (rs-FC) between non-pedophilic c

Victims or perpetrators? Young mothers who survived intimate partner violence and their involvement with the child welfare system in Ontario.

Adolescent and young adult mothers investigated by child welfare experience multiple challenges, including high concentrations of poverty, housing instability, social isolation, mental health issues, and intimate partner violence (IPV). However, little is known about the lived experiences of young mothers involved with the child welfare system who have also encountered IPV. This study begins to address this gap by analyzing interview data of young mothers who had child welfare involvement in Ontario while pregnant or parenting and who noted experiencing IPV (n = 10). Interpretative phenomenolo

The socioeconomic outcomes of sexual minority youth who have aged-out of foster care in California.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about the adjustment of sexual minority youth as they "age-out" of foster care and begin living independently. Existing data is particularly limited for young people after they turn age 21. OBJECTIVE: The present study aims to address this gap by examining key socioeconomic outcomes of sexual minority youth and their heterosexual peers following their exit from the California foster care system. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: We used representative survey data from four waves of the California Youth Transitions to Adulthood Study (CalYOUTH), which followed young people

Efficacy of delivery models in early intervention: Findings from Germany's nurse-family partnership on family and child welfare services and pediatric medical incidents in high-risk families.

BACKGROUND: This study examines the efficacy of two different delivery models of the ProKind intervention, a German adaptation of the Nurse-Family Partnership (NFP): The continuous model (CM) with visits exclusively delivered by NFP-trained midwives, and a tandem model (TM) with visits delivered by a midwife during pregnancy and a social worker postnatally. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effectiveness of different delivery models in the ProKind intervention on reducing surveillance by the child protection service (CPS), foster care placements, and pediatric medical incidents. Characteristics of Transition-Age Youth Engaging in Suicidal Behavior.

PURPOSE: Suicide rates are markedly high among children with foster care involvement. Transition-age youth (TAY) who age-out of the foster care system are at particularly high risk. METHODS: Analyzing data from the California Youth Transitions to Adulthood Study (n=727), this paper explores the descriptive characteristics of TAY who engage in suicidal behavior with the goals of better identifying, understanding, and supporting those at risk. We report rates of suicidal ideation and suicide attempt at four interview waves (ages 17, 19, 21, 23) and examine differences in rates by sociodemograph

Mothers and fathers in the criminal justice system and children's child protective services involvement.

BACKGROUND: Parental criminal justice system (CJS) involvement is a marker for child protective services (CPS) involvement. OBJECTIVE: To document how parental criminal case processing affects children's CPS involvement. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: Participants included mothers and fathers with a serious criminal charge (mothers = 78,882; fathers = 165,070) and without any criminal charge (mothers = 962,963; fathers = 743,604) between 2008-2012. Statewide North Carolina records on court proceedings, births, CPS assessments/investigations, and foster care placements were used. METHODS: The obs

Life is a highway: Driver's license acquisition and social determinants for youth in foster care and their non-foster care peers.

BACKGROUND: Data regarding the connection between driver licensure and social determinants for youth could provide insight into the impact of driver license acquisition. These relationships are important for youth overall and particularly for foster youth given that adolescents in foster care obtain driver's licenses less often than their non-foster care peers. This integrative review explores the association between driver licensure and social determinants. METHODS: Whittemore and Knafl guidelines were used to conduct the integrative review. The articles were identified in collaboration with

Health of children adopted from Guatemala: comparison of orphanage and foster care.

OBJECTIVE: Since 1986, American parents have adopted >17300 children from Guatemala. This study assessed the health, growth, and developmental status of 103 Guatemalan adopted children (48 girls; 55 boys) after arrival in the United States. Physical evidence suggestive of prenatal alcohol exposure and adequacy of vaccinations administered were also reviewed. METHODS: Retrospective chart review was conducted of 103 children who were evaluated after arrival in the United States in an international adoption specialty clinic, and a case-matched study was conducted of a subgroup of 50 children who

Recommendations for Preventing Child Sexual Abuse in Youth-Serving Organizations: Implications From an Australian Royal Commission Review of the Literature.

Evidence suggests that tens of millions of children and adolescents are involved in youth-serving organizations (YSOs) outside of their homes on a daily basis. Children's involvement with YSOs clearly offers a broad array of emotional, social, and personal development benefits. This involvement can, however, also be associated with a variety of safety risks, including the potential for child sexual abuse (CSA) victimization and the myriad short- and long-term consequences to its victims and their families. Recognizing the significance of CSA within YSOs, the Australian Royal Commission into In

Age and other risk factors related to reentry to care from kin guardian homes.

Although kinship guardianship is an increasingly important foster care exit pathway for children in the United States, research on the factors leading to kinship guardianship breakdown is lacking. This study examines the factors associated with guardianship breakdown for children who exited foster care to kinship guardianship in California between 2003 and 2010 (N = 18,831). Specifying time-dependent Cox relative risk models, children's age trajectories are directly accounted for in the analysis. This allows differentiation between duration dependence (i.e., time spent in guardianship) and chi

Youth with problematic sexualized behaviors in the child welfare system: a one-year longitudinal study.

This study assessed continuity of problematic sexualized behaviors (PSB) over a 1-year period. Ninety-seven 10-12-year-olds in either foster boarding homes or a residential treatment center participated at Time 1. Twelve months later, 78 youth were available for a second data collection assessment. At both data collection phases, researchers interviewed foster parents or primary therapists about the youths' sexual behavior. Findings revealed significant continuity in PSB over time, with children who at Time 1 exhibited PSB significantly more likely to exhibit PSB at Time 2. The reverse was als

Type of maltreatment as a predictor of mental health service use for children in foster care.

This study examined predictors of utilization of mental health services among children and adolescents in foster care. Of particular interest was whether the type of maltreatment was related to utilization of services. Subjects were 662 children ages 2-17 who were in foster care for at least 5 months. Service utilization, demographic, and behavioral data were collected through interviews with the subjects' caretakers. Type of maltreatment data were collected from Child Welfare case records. Fifty-six percent of the subjects had received mental health services. Children removed from their homes

Reframing child abuse and neglect research through a social work lens: a global bibliometric and thematic evolution analysis (2000-2025).

INTRODUCTION: Child neglect and abuse research has expanded rapidly, yet its development has rarely been mapped through a social work lens centered on child welfare and child protection systems. This study provides a bibliometric mapping of the child neglect and abuse literature within the social work context from 2000 to 2025. METHODS: Records were retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection and Scopus, merged, deduplicated, and screened, yielding a final dataset of 6,132 journal articles and reviews. Using bibliometrix and VOSviewer, annual publication and citation trends, co-authorsh

Family Psychosocial Assets, Child Behavioral Regulation, and Obesity.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Little attention has been given to the study of early childhood factors that protect against the development of obesity and severe obesity. We investigated whether exposure to familial psychosocial assets and risks in infancy (1-15 months) and early childhood (24-54 months) and child behavioral regulation in early childhood predict longitudinal change in BMI (2 to 15 years). METHODS: Participants included 1077 predominantly non-Hispanic, White, English-speaking mother-child dyads from the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development Study of Early Child

Nurturing children's development through healthy eating and active living: Time for policies to support effective interventions in the context of responsive emotional support and early learning.

Fostering the growth, development, health, and wellbeing of children is a global priority. The early childhood period presents a critical window to influence lifelong trajectories, however urgent multisectoral action is needed to ensure that families are adequately supported to nurture their children's growth and development. With a shared vision to give every child the best start in life, thus helping them reach their full developmental potential, we have formed the International Healthy Eating Active Living Matters (HEALing Matters) Alliance. Together, we form a global network of academics a

Love and belonging in foster carer recruitment materials in New South Wales, Australia.

BACKGROUND: In order for foster care placements to be considered good, research has identified that children need to experience love and belonging in the home. It is therefore important that foster carer recruitment target individuals who are able and willing to attempt to provide love and belonging to the children placed with them. OBJECTIVE: To quantify the extent to which and how foster carer agencies represent love and belonging in foster carer recruitment materials. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: Foster carer recruitment material collected in New South Wales (NSW), Australia between August 2

The influence of immigrant status and acculturation on the development of overweight in Latino families: a qualitative study.

Exposure to obesogenic environments in the U.S. may foster development of overweight in immigrants with greater acculturation. Few studies document mechanisms of the acculturation process from immigrants' own perspectives or describe implications on the children of immigrants. Focus groups and in-depth interviews were conducted with immigrant Latina mothers (N = 51) examining mothers' beliefs, attitudes and practices related to early child feeding and weight. Focus group participants completing the Marin Acculturation Scale more closely identified with Latino culture, although the mean score (
