Comparing self-reported quality of life in youth with bipolar versus other disorders.

OBJECTIVES: This study benchmarks quality of life (QoL) of youth with bipolar disorder (BD) against healthy youth, youth with chronic medical conditions, and youth with other psychiatric disorders. The relative impacts of depressive, (hypo)manic, mixed, and externalizing symptoms on QoL are tested for youth with BD. METHOD: In total, 657 youth completed the Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia for Children (KSADS), the KSADS depression and mania scales, the Parent General Behavior Inventory (PGBI), and the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL). Youth-reported QoL was determined by the

An Examination of the 4 Rs 2 Ss for Problem Behaviors: A Preventive Approach.

Early treatment of behavioral problems can prevent their progression into intractable disorders. This study examined the impact of a multiple family group (MFG) intervention for children with behavior symptoms and their families. Fifty-four (n = 54) caregiver/child dyads with sub-clinical levels of oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) participated in a 16-week MFG. Child, caregiver, and family outcomes were assessed at baseline, post-treatment, and at 6 months follow-up. Significant decreases in impairment with parents, family members, and peers, and improvements in child self-esteem were found

Behavioral characteristics of children with Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease.

We explored the behavioral characteristics of 24 children with Perthes' disease. Parents completed standard psychological self-administered questionnaires regarding their child's behavior: the Conners Parent Symptom Questionnaire and the Achenbach Child Behavior Checklist. One third (33%) of the children had abnormally high scores in profiles associated with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) (impulsive, hyperactive, and psychosomatic categories), much higher than the 3-5% incidence of ADHD in the general population. They also tended to have difficulties with school and social int

Convergence between statistically derived behavior problem syndromes and child psychiatric diagnoses.

The relations between scores on statistically derived behavior problem syndromes and DSM-III diagnoses were examined for 270 clinically referred children aged 6 through 16. Each child's parent completed the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) and was administered the NIMH Diagnostic Interview Schedule for Children (DISC)--a structured interview covering DSM-III diagnostic criteria. Numerous behavior problems scales scored from the CBCL were significantly related to one or more diagnoses. The strongest relations were between scores on the Hyperactive, Delinquent, and Depressed scales and diagnoses

Mediating the Verbal Ability-Conduct Problems Relationship with Child Empathy and Self-Control.

This study was performed in an effort to determine whether poor inhibitory control, operationalized as weak verbal skills, contributes to early antisocial behavior by impeding a child's ability to empathize with others and exercise control over their behavior. A model was tested whereby child empathy and self-control were conceptualized as mediators of a putative relationship between low verbal ability and future conduct problems. A mediation analysis was performed in which the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test (PPVT), a measure of auditory comprehension skills, receptive vocabulary, and verbal

Reliability and validity of the screen for child anxiety related emotional disorders (SCARED) in Chinese children.

The present study examined the psychometric properties of the screen for child anxiety related emotional disorders (SCARED) in a large community sample of Chinese children. The 41-item version of the SCARED was administered to 1559 primary and junior high school students (774 boys and 785 girls, mean age 11.8+/-2.11) in 12 Chinese cities. The SCARED demonstrated moderate to high internal consistency (alpha=0.43-0.89) and test-retest reliability (intraclass correlation coefficients=0.46-0.77 over 2 weeks and 0.24-0.67 over 12 weeks), moderate parent-child correlation (r=0.49-0.59) and good disc

Emergency Department Admissions for Physical Child Abuse: Evidence from the 2006-2017 Nationwide Emergency Department Sample.

Physical child abuse continues to be a serious public health issue in the United States. This study expands on previous research by exploring trends in physical child abuse diagnoses among children admitted to emergency departments (EDs) across the United States. The analysis aimed to explicate the association between physical child abuse and both sociodemographic and behavioral health covariates to better inform and identify risk factors associated with ED admissions for abuse. The study also explicated differences between confirmed and suspected physical child abuse cases. The study utilized

Microsocial analysis of dyadic interactions with toddlers and mothers with borderline personality disorder.

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is known for disruptions in mother-child interaction, but possible underlying patterns of micro-behavior are barely understood. This is the first study examining behavioral dyadic synchrony-the coordinated and reciprocal adaptation of behavior-and regulation on a micro-level and relating it to macro-behavior in mothers with BPD and their toddlers. Twenty-five mothers with BPD and 29 healthy mothers participated with their 18- to 36-month-old toddlers in a frustration-inducing paradigm. Mother and toddler behavior was continuously micro-coded for gaze, affe

Examining Caregiver- and Family-Level Psychosocial Influences on Child Oral Health Behavioral Outcomes in Racially and Economically Minoritized Urban Families.

OBJECTIVES: Understanding the pathways linking caregiver- and family-level psychosocial factors and child oral health behaviors is critical for addressing oral health disparities. The current study examined the associations between caregiver psychosocial functioning and family chaos and child toothbrushing behaviors in children at high risk for poor oral health outcomes. METHODS: Data were drawn from the baseline wave of the CO-OP Chicago Cohort Study (U01DE030067), a longitudinal study on child/caregiver dyads exploring oral health behaviors and caries development in young children (N = 296

Maternal Pregnancy-Related Anxiety Is Associated With Sexually Dimorphic Alterations in Amygdala Volume in 4-Year-Old Children.

Prenatal stress is associated with child behavioral outcomes increasing susceptibility for psychiatric disorders in later life. Altered fetal brain development might partly mediate this association, as some studies suggest. With this study, we investigated the relation between prenatal stress, child's brain structure and behavioral problems. The association between self-reported maternal pregnancy-related anxiety (PRAQ-R2 questionnaire, second and third trimester) and brain gray matter volume was probed in 27 4-year-old children (13 female). Voxel based morphometry was applied with an age-matc

Neonatal regulatory behavior problems are predicted by maternal early pregnancy overweight and obesity: findings from the prospective PREDO Study.

INTRODUCTION: Maternal overweight/obesity and comorbid hypertensive disorders and gestational diabetes associate with neurodevelopmental delay in the offspring in childhood. We hypothesize that these maternal conditions associate also with the offspring regulatory behavior problems and impact on neurodevelopment via the offspring regulatory behavior. METHODS: A number of 3117 women of the PREDO Study filled in a questionnaire on regulatory behavior problems at the child's mean age of 16.9 days and 2116 of them a questionnaire on developmental milestones at the child's mean age of 42.2 months.

Child physical abuse: risk for psychopathology and efficacy of interventions.

The emerging research on child physical abuse (CPA) is reviewed herewith. Incidence of CPA may be as high as 11% for adolescents in the US. Child physical abuse survivors vary in their symptom picture of severity and type. Children who have been physically abused may experience symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety disorders, depressive disorders, or disruptive behavior disorders. Additionally, developmental disturbances include problems with attachment, social skills, and affect regulation. Chronic abuse is associated with more severe psychopathology. Cognitive processing of the

The intersection of extreme poverty and familial mental health in the United States.

Approximately 22% of children in the United States live in poverty, with high rates of caregiver depression and child disruptive behavior disorders (DBD). The current study aims to explore the relationships between living in extreme poverty and both child and parent mental health. Data are comprised of findings from the first effectiveness study of the 4Rs and 2Ss intervention, in addition to preliminary data from an implementation study currently underway (n = 484). Families with an annual income of less than $9,999 reported significantly greater child DBD scores and prevalence of clinically

Multi-Level Family Factors and Affective and Behavioral Symptoms of Oppositional Defiant Disorder in Chinese Children.

Given the important role of family environment in children's psychological development, the objective of this study was to examine the linkages between family factors at the whole, dyadic, and individual levels and two dimensions (affective and behavioral) of Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) symptoms in Chinese children. Participants comprised of 80 father-child dyads and 169 mother-child dyads from families with ODD children. The results indicated that multilevel family factors were differently associated with children's affective and behavioral ODD symptoms. All the family factors at the

Single Nucleotide Polymorphism Heritability of a General Psychopathology Factor in Children.

OBJECTIVE: Co-occurrence of mental disorders is commonly observed, but the etiology underlying this observation is poorly understood. Studies in adolescents and adults have identified a general psychopathology factor associated with a high risk for different psychiatric disorders. We defined a multi-informant general psychopathology factor in school-aged children and estimated its single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) heritability. The goal was to test the hypothesis that child behavioral and emotional problems are under the influence of highly pleiotropic common autosomal genetic variants that

Combining parent and child training for young children with ADHD.

The efficacy of the Incredible Years parent and child training programs is established in children diagnosed with oppositional defiant disorder but not among young children whose primary diagnosis is attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). We conducted a randomized control trial evaluating the combined parent and child program interventions among 99 children diagnosed with ADHD (ages 4-6). Mother reported significant treatment effects for appropriate and harsh discipline, use of physical punishment, and monitoring, whereas fathers reported no significant parenting changes. Independent

Helping the Noncompliant Child and Child Behavior Outcomes: An Exploratory Examination of Financial Strain.

Theoretical models and empirical research have highlighted the impact of economic disadvantage on children's psychosocial development broadly and the onset, maintenance, and treatment of early-onset (3-8 years) behavior disorders (BDs) more specifically. In the context of intervention, evidence suggests that economic disadvantage may pose risk for diminished parent-mediated treatment efficacy (e.g., Behavioral Parent Training [BPT]) given its impact on salient factors in the family system. Though, studies have shown significant variability in BPT outcomes within families experiencing economic

Association of nail biting and psychiatric disorders in children and their parents in a psychiatrically referred sample of children.

BACKGROUND: Nail biting (NB) is a very common unwanted behavior. The majority of children are motivated to stop NB and have already tried to stop it, but are generally unsuccessful in doing so. It is a difficult behavior to modify or treat. The objective of this study was to investigate the prevalence of co-morbid psychiatric disorders in a clinical sample of children with NB who present at a child and adolescent mental healthcare outpatient clinic and the prevalence of psychiatric disorders in their parents. METHOD: A consecutive sample of 450 referred children was examined for NB and 63 (14

Social skills training and play group intervention for children with oppositional-defiant disorders/conduct disorder: Mediating mechanisms in a head-to-head comparison.

Objective: Social-cognitive information processing, social skills, and social interactions are problem-maintaining variables for aggressive behavior in children. We hypothesized that these factors may be possible mediators of the mechanism of change in the child-centered treatment of conduct disorders (CDs). The aim of the present study (Clinical trials.gov Identifier: NCT01406067) was to examine putative mechanisms of change for the decrease in oppositional-defiant behavior resulting from child-centered treatment of patients with oppositional-defiant disorder (ODD) or CD. Method: 91 children
