[Evaluation of the school-lunch program in Campinas, Brazil].

The objective of this study was to investigate the calorie and protein adequacies, to establishoffe operation model and the operational difficulties of the School-Lunch Program in Campinas, Brazil. Six schools randomly selected (1,237 children) were investigated. Calorie and protein consumption were estimated by weighed records. A model food project was developed in order to analyse the city food-service operation. The adequacy values were very low: 48.6 +/- 17.3% for energy and 52.7 +/- 17.2% for protein. The Tukey test indicated that schools did not differ regarding adequacies (alpha = 0.005

[Use of a fermented powdered milk in malnourished or lactose intolerant children].

Lactase deficient subjects, who form the bulk of the world population, absorb yogurt lactose because the bacteria used for fermentation produce beta-galactosidase. From a milk fermented by these bacteria and dried by a temperature-controlled process a power could be obtained which possess residual lactase activity but, unlike yogurt, does not need storage at low temperature. The lactose of this fermented powdered milk is perfectly absorbed, as proved by hydrogen respiratory tests performed in 35 lactose intolerant African subjects living in isolated villages. In 25 malnourished children under

Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy in Western Brazilian Amazon: Associated factors and neonatal outcomes.

OBJECTIVE: Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) are responsible for several maternal and fetal complications. This study investigated the occurrence of HDP, associated factors, and neonatal complications in women living in the Western Brazilian Amazon. METHODS: This is a population-based cross-sectional study with 1521 mother-child pairs enrolled in the Maternal and Child Health and Nutrition in Acre birth cohort (MINA-Brazil study). All parturients with HDP (registered in the medical records) were identified. Crude and adjusted prevalence ratios were calculated in Poisson regression mod

Scurvy presenting with limp and weakness: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Scurvy is one of the oldest diseases known to mankind. Although presently rare in the developed world, scurvy was a common potentially fatal disease. In recent times, the most common risk factors for scurvy include alcoholism, low socioeconomic status, and severely poor nutrition or dietary restriction secondary to psychiatric illness or developmental disorders. Our case demonstrates the importance of having a high index of clinical suspicion of an uncommon disease in developed countries and emphasizes the necessity of a dietary screening that could potentially reduce extensive wor

[Hematologic-nutritional study in children predisposed to infection with high-load of Trichuris trichiura].

A coproparasitological survey is carried out in 3 family doctors' home-offices in City of Havana Province following the Kato-Katz technique (3 samples from each person); we found 15 children predisposed to high-load infection by Trichuris trichiura. This group was compared to a group of 20 children infected with a low parasite load, and to another group of 20 children with no parasite infection. A study of nutritional anemia was carried out to all of them including: hemoglobin, hematocrit, ferritin, serum iron, vitamin B12, and serum and erythrocyte folates. No significant differences were fou

Effect of ascariasis upon nutritional status of children.

One hundred children aged 24-72 months who had history of passing roundworms during the preceding 12 months were compared with 100 children without such history. The two groups were matched for age, sex, economic status, and birth order. Children who had ascaris were 2.1 cm shorter in height, 0.6 cm, thinner for mid-arm circumference, and 0.38 kg lighter in weight compared to the children who did not pass ascaris. The first two of these differences were statistically significant (P less than 0.005). It is concluded that: 1. ascariasis contributes significantly to malnutrition in communities wh

Technical aspects of feeding the disabled child.

Children with neurological impairment frequently have difficulties in consuming sufficient energy and other nutrients to maintain adequate nutritional status. Under-nutrition is a significant contributory factor to growth failure. Eating may be distressing and time-consuming for the child and carer. Aspiration of feeds is common and may predispose to chronic chest infections. Gastro-oesophageal reflux is also common and may contribute to significant morbidity. This paper discusses some of the issues involved in the nutritional management of neurologically impaired children.

Epidemiology of blindness in children.

An estimated 1.4 million of the world's children are blind. A blind child is more likely to live in socioeconomic deprivation, to be more frequently hospitalised during childhood and to die in childhood than a child not living with blindness. This update of a previous review on childhood visual impairment focuses on emerging therapies for children with severe visual disability (severe visual impairment and blindness or SVI/BL).For children in higher income countries, cerebral visual impairment and optic nerve anomalies remain the most common causes of SVI/BL, while retinopathy of prematurity (

Understanding the Spatial Predictors of Malnutrition Among 0-2 Years Children in India Using Path Analysis.

Background: Despite several programs and policies to turn down the burden of malnutrition in the country, the rank of India in the Global Hunger Index (GHI) is 102 among 117 countries, which indicates a serious hunger situation. It is essential to design more specific interventions by focusing on the key determinants that may directly or indirectly influence malnutrition in India. Methods: Utilizing data from the National Family and Health Survey-4 (NFHS) (2015-16), we developed a structural equation model to find the direct, indirect, and total effect of various determinants on stunting, wast

Research Priorities on the Relationship between Wasting and Stunting.

BACKGROUND: Wasting and stunting are global public health problems that frequently co-exist. However, they are usually separated in terms of policy, guidance, programming and financing. Though both wasting and stunting are manifestations of undernutrition caused by disease and poor diet, there are critical gaps in our understanding of the physiological relationship between them, and how interventions for one may affect the other. The aim of this exercise was to establish research priorities in the relationships between wasting and stunting to guide future research investments. METHODS AND FIN

Nutritional status of infants and young children and characteristics of their diets.

Adoption of the recommended breast-feeding and complementary feeding behaviors and access to the appropriate quality and quantity of foods are essential components of optimal nutrition for infants and young children between ages 6 and 24 mo. Iron, zinc and vitamin B-6 are deficient in complementary food diets in Bangladesh, Ghana, Guatemala, Mexico and Peru. Low intakes of iron are consistent with a high prevalence of anemia seen in this age group. The adequacy of observed intakes for calcium, vitamin A, thiamin, folate and vitamin C depends on the age range in question and the set of requirem

Nutrition mission to Iraq for UNICEF.

At the request of UNICEF, the authors conducted a rapid nutritional assessment of children from birth to five years of age in southern Iraq during the second half of June 1991. With support from local UNICEF staff, the nutrition team examined 680 children, measuring weight, height, and mid-upper arm circumference and observing clinical signs of anemia, vitamin A deficiency, and dehydration. These measurements and observations were performed in 14 rural, urban, and periurban settings in Basrah and Amarah governorates. Evidence of both acute and chronic malnutrition was found in large numbers of

Nutritional management of inflammatory bowel disease.

Malnutrition and growth failure are frequent complications of inflammatory bowel disease in childhood owing to inadequate dietary nutrient intakes, excessive intestinal losses, malabsorption, and increased nutrient requirements. Aggressive nutritional therapy is indicated for primary and supportive management of disease activity, drug nutrient interactives, individual nutrient abnormalities, and the overall complications of inflammatory bowel disease, malnutrition, and growth failure. The prevention of nutritional disorders in inflammatory bowel disease is accomplished by monitoring anthropome

Classification of nutritional status in cystic fibrosis.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Nutritional status impacts on the progression of cystic fibrosis. Current guidelines recommend the use of anthropometric indicators to classify nutritional status and identify malnutrition. However, the current nutrition-classification systems are problematic. I summarize these problems and review recent progress in the development of evidence-based anthropometric criteria for classifying nutritional status in cystic fibrosis patients. RECENT FINDINGS: Percentage of ideal body weight as a malnutrition index is flawed. In children with cystic fibrosis, this index underestima

Animal Models of Undernutrition and Enteropathy as Tools for Assessment of Nutritional Intervention.

: Undernutrition is a major public health problem leading to 1 in 5 of all deaths in children under 5 years. Undernutrition leads to growth stunting and/or wasting and is often associated with environmental enteric dysfunction (EED). EED mechanisms leading to growth failure include intestinal hyperpermeability, villus blunting, malabsorption and gut inflammation. As non-invasive methods for investigating gut function in undernourished children are limited, pre-clinical models are relevant to elucidating the pathophysiological processes involved in undernutrition and EED, and to identifying nov

Building convergence in science, programs, and policy actions on child undernutrition: symposium rationale and overview.

Childhood stunting and wasting are often portrayed as relatively distinct manifestations of undernutrition. Little is known about how children progress from one manifestation of undernutrition to another as they grow older, nor how intervention strategies need to consider the potential overlap of these manifestations of undernutrition. While much is known about the causes of growth faltering in general, much less is known about which pre-disposing contextual and biological factors cause children to become stunted as opposed to wasted or both. Increasingly, nutrition researchers have tended to
