The role of executive function (EF) in the reading process, and in those with reading difficulties, remains unclear. As members of the Texas Center for Learning Disabilities, we review multiple perspectives regarding EF in reading and then summarize some of our recent studies of struggling and typical readers in grades 3-5. Study 1a found that a bi-factor structure best represented a comprehensive assessment of EF. Study 1b found that cognitive and behavioral measures of EF related independently to math and reading. Study 1c found that EF related to reading, above and beyond other variables, b

The co-morbidity of attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and reading disorder (RD) is more frequent than expected. This investigation assessed the potential uniqueness of the co-morbidity of ADHD and RD and extended existing findings to the Chinese language. A parallel group design with a post hoc analysis of group differences was employed to compare 4 groups of children (30 with ADHD, 33 with RD, 28 with ADHD + RD, and 30 typically developing) regarding their reading comprehension, attention, reading-related abilities, and cognitive abilities. The findings indicated that children w

BACKGROUND: The number of children with cochlear implants who have other difficulties such as attention deficiency and cerebral palsy has increased dramatically. Despite the need for information on the results of cochlear implantation in this group, the available literature is extremely limited. We, therefore, sought to compare the levels of auditory perception in children with cochlear implants with and without additional disabilities.
METHODS: A spondee test comprising 20 two-syllable words was performed. The data analysis was done using SPSS, version 19.
RESULTS: Thirty-one children who h

BACKGROUND: Assessment of children with complex and severe learning disabilities is challenging and the children may not respond to the monochrome stimuli of traditional tests. The International Association of Scientific Studies on Intellectual Disability recommends that visual function assessment in poorly or non-cooperative children should be undertaken in an objective manner. We have developed a functional visual assessment tool to assess vision in children with complex and multiple disabilities.

The traditional way of identifying children with mathematics learning disabilities (MLDs) using the low-achievement method with one-off assessment suffers from several limitations (e.g., arbitrary cutoff, measurement error, lacking consideration of growth). The present study attempted to identify children with MLD using the latent growth modelling approach, which minimizes the above potential problems. Two hundred and ten Chinese-speaking children were classified into five classes based on their arithmetic performance over 3 years. Their performance on various number-related cognitive measures

BACKGROUND: 150 million children live with disabilities globally, and a recent systematic review found 3 to 4 times the levels of violence versus non-disabled children in high income countries. However, almost nothing is known about violence against disabled children in lower income countries. We aim to explore the prevalence, patterns and risk factors for physical, sexual and emotional violence among disabled children attending primary school in Luwero District, Uganda.
METHODS: We performed a secondary analysis of data from the baseline survey of the Good Schools Study. 3706 children and yo

Children with intellectual disabilities (ID) and controls were exposed to an incidental learning phase, where half of the participants received highly implicit instructions at test while the other half received explicit instructions. When learning was assessed for simple chunks of information, children with ID performed better with implicit instructions than with explicit ones, while the typically developing (TD) children performed equally well in the two test conditions. When more complex chunks were considered, performance was degraded for all children in the implicit instructions condition,

BACKGROUND: Children with learning disabilities are identified by their severe learning problems and their deficient school achievement. On the other hand, children with sub-average school achievement and sub-average intellectual development are thought to suffer from a general intellectual delay rather than from specific learning disabilities. The open question is whether these two groups are characterised by differences in their cognitive functioning. The present study explored several functions of working memory.
METHOD: A working memory battery with tasks for the phonological loop, the vi

The field of neuroorthopedics centers on chronic diseases demanding close clinical monitoring. We shall use several examples to show how the various noninvasive diagnostic instruments can be used to obtain insight into the central nervous system as well as into the musculoskeletal system and its morphology. The choice of the most appropriate method depends on the problem; that is, whether the method is to be applied for clinical use or for basic research. In this report we introduce various technical examination methods that are being used successfully in the fields of pediatrics, orthopedics,

There has been considerable discussion of the methods used for the identification of children with reading disabilities. This study examined three different methods that could be used in the identification of children with reading disabilities and their consistency with teacher ratings of behaviors believed to be associated with reading disabilities. Standardized, norm-referenced measures of achievement, phonological processing measures, and curriculum-based measures of reading fluency were used with 40 children in Grades 1 and 2. Comparisons were made to determine which measures, if any, diff

This study investigated electroencephalographic differences between two groups of children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, combined type, with reading disabilities (ADHD + RD) or without (ADHD) and typical control participants. Twenty participants were included in each group. All participants were between the ages of 8 and 12 years, and groups were matched on age and gender. The electroencephalographic (EEG) was recorded during an eyes-closed resting condition from 21 monopolar derivations, which were clustered into nine regions for analysis. The EEGs were Fourier-transformed to

The Nowicki-Strickland Locus of Control Scale (Nowicki & Strickland, 1973) was administered to 51 boys, ages 7 to 9 years. Children were classified into four separate diagnostic groups: (a) attention deficit disorder with hyperactivity (ADDH), (b) learning disabled (LD), (c) ADDH-LD, and (d) controls. Results of a 2 X 2 (ADDH X LD) analysis of variance indicated that the LD diagnostic dimension was associated with heightened externality. Locus of control scores were not found to be significantly related to scores on a variety of other descriptive and diagnostic measures with the exception of I

PURPOSE: Play is essential for child development, particularly for those with disabilities. The integration of information and communication technology(ICT) offers promising solutions to address the barriers to play for children with disabilities by improving accessibility and engagement. This study aimed to develop and evaluate a smart care play program for children with disabilities and their families.
METHODS: This methodological study used a Living Lab to involve program development and evaluation through a mixed-methods approach. In the development phase, mothers of children with disabil

Sixteen percent of the world's population experiences significant disability. This is likely an underestimation, as there is not a uniformly accepted definition of disability and there are limited validated tools to support clinicians in their diagnoses, especially in low- and middle-income nations. Even when a diagnosis is made, access to specialized health care and community resources is limited, with increased travel distances and high cost of services presenting additional challenges for patients and families. The World Health Organization and the United Nations have provided additional fr

Purpose: To describe the study characteristics, intervention components, and intervention fidelity measurement of power mobility interventions for children three years and younger with mobility disabilities. Methods: We conducted a systematic review of studies that provided a power mobility device and in-person training over more than one session. PubMed, Web of Science, PsycINFO, and Google Scholar (April 2025) were searched. Data were extracted for study characteristics, intervention components, and intervention fidelity measurement (adherence, dosage, quality of delivery, participant respon

Children with neurodevelopmental disabilities are at high risk for sleep problems, which can negatively affect their health and that of their families. Improving sleep may be one of the most effective ways to improve behaviour, mood, positive social interaction, attention and learning, and reduce future risks for poor metabolic and mental health. While insomnia is the most common concern, increased rates of other sleep disorders are also found in this population. Sleep problems require prompt identification and intervention, which includes recognizing or ruling out contributory medical conditi

BACKGROUND: Enhancing problem-solving abilities (PSA) in children with intellectual disabilities is critical for fostering independence and adaptive skills. The initial PCTL- model integrated phenomenon-based learning (PhBL), cognitive coaching (CC), task analysis (TA), and optimal learning environments (LE) to address the unique educational needs of this population.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study employed a two-phase approach. In phase 1, a conceptual framework for the PCTL model was synthesized through a systematic review of existing literature and an analysis of the teaching contexts spec

Globally, families with children with developmental disabilities (DDs) experience challenges, including social isolation, stigma, and poverty, especially in low-income settings in Africa. Most children with DDs in Africa remain unidentified and receive no formal support. Caregiver interventions focusing on education and training for the carers/parents have been shown to be adaptable and low intensity in implementation, although the economic evidence is limited. This review aimed to describe the evidence and methodological aspects of economic evaluations for caregiver interventions for DDs. The

BACKGROUND: Drowning is a leading cause of death for children. Some populations of children with disabilities, such as children with autism, experience a health disparity in drowning when compared to peers without disabilities.
OBJECTIVE: This study presents a secondary data analysis of the response to intervention for a 5-day adapted swim instruction program (iCan Swim) for children with disabilities (n = 164 participants) ages 3-18 years.
METHODS: This secondary data analysis assessed the effectiveness of the swim intervention on changes in swim skill level from Day 1 to Day 5. Association
