Binge drinking in alcohol-preferring sP rats at the end of the nocturnal period.

Sardinian alcohol-preferring (sP) rats have been selectively bred for high alcohol preference and consumption using the standard 2-bottle "alcohol (10%, v/v) vs. water" choice regimen with unlimited access; under this regimen, sP rats daily consume 6-7 g/kg alcohol. The present study assessed a new paradigm of alcohol intake in which sP rats were exposed to the 4-bottle "alcohol (10%, 20%, and 30%, v/v) vs. water" choice regimen during one of the 12 h of the dark phase of the daily light/dark cycle; the time of alcohol exposure was changed daily in a semi-random order and was unpredictable to

Opinions of dating agents about strabismic subjects' ability to find a partner.

AIMS: To determine the influence of strabismus on the ability to find a partner. METHODS: We interviewed Swiss dating agents retrieved from two Swiss online telephone directories using a validated questionnaire to determine whether strabismus has any impact on the ability to find a partner. During the interviews, subjects with internet access could view downloadable, digitally altered photographs of a strabismic man and women, as well as images of other computer-generated facial anomalies. RESULTS: Of the 40 dating agents, 92.5% judged that strabismic subjects have more difficulty finding a

The etiology of anomalous sexual preferences in men.

People discover rather than choose their sexual interests. The process of discovery typically begins before the onset of puberty and is associated with an increase in the secretion of sex hormones from the adrenal glands. However, the determinants of the direction of sexual interest, in the sense of preferences for the same or opposite sex, are earlier. These preferences, although not manifest until much later in development, appear to be caused by the neural organizational effects of intrauterine hormonal events. Variations in these hormonal events likely have several causes and two of these

Schedule-induced cocaine drinking: choice between cocaine and vehicle.

Rats were exposed to daily 3-hr schedule-induced polydipsia sessions (fixed-time 1-min food-pellet delivery) with two drinking fluids available: cocaine solution and water. Fluid position was alternated daily. Polydipsia occurred mostly from a preferred-side spout (position preference) until cocaine solution concentration was increased to between 0.52 and 1.04 mg/ml and animals drank mostly water. Within a lower concentration range (0.28-0.6 mg/ml) maximum session cocaine intakes ranged from 54.3 to 120.1 mg/kg. Postsession serum cocaine levels were about 200 ng/ml. At individually chosen coca

Probing the decision-making mechanisms underlying choice between drug and nondrug rewards in rats.

Delineating the decision-making mechanisms underlying choice between drug and nondrug rewards remains a challenge. This study adopts an original approach to probe these mechanisms by comparing response latencies during sampling versus choice trials. While lengthening of latencies during choice is predicted in a deliberative choice model (DCM), the race-like response competition mechanism postulated by the Sequential choice model (SCM) predicts a shortening of latencies during choice compared to sampling. Here, we tested these predictions by conducting a retrospective analysis of cocaine-versus

Evaluating the Viability of Virtual Reality for Children's Food Choice Research: Comparative Mixed Methods Study.

BACKGROUND: Virtual reality (VR) systems offer promising potential as a controlled platform to investigate human behaviors specifically related to food choices. Yet, little is known about its viability for conducting food choice studies with children, thus limiting the development of public health research. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the viability of VR technology for understanding children's food choices, focusing specifically on perceptual differences between VR and real-life (RL) settings. We examined how children perceive and interact with food portion sizes and container

How much do consumers consider sustainability when purchasing a toothbrush? A discrete choice experiment.

Introduction A recent resurgence of sustainability in healthcare has resulted in huge progress towards more 'eco-aware' products and their incorporation into everyday life, with home oral hygiene products being not far behind. However, it is unclear which components of sustainability consumers value or how much they are willing to pay for these.Aim To use a discrete choice experiment (DCE) to evaluate preferences for attributes such as recyclable handle materials and recyclable packaging of low-cost disposable manual toothbrushes, along with the willingness to pay (WTP) for said attributes.Met

Development of a cortical delay discounting assay: a potential biomarker of externalizing disorders.

BACKGROUND: People who tend to impulsively choose smaller, sooner rewards over larger, later rewards are at increased risk for addiction and psychiatric disorders. A neurobiological measure of the tendency to overvalue immediate gratification could facilitate the study of individuals who are susceptible to these mental disorders. The objective of this research was to develop a cortical assay of impulsive choice for immediate rewards. METHODS: A cortex-based assay of impulsive choice was developed using 1105 healthy adults from the Human Connectome Project, and then cross-validated in two inde

Color associations among designers and non-designers for common warning and operation concepts.

This study examined color-concept associations among designers and non-designers with commonly used warning and operation concepts. This study required 199 designers and 175 non-designers to indicate their choice among nine colors to associate with each of the 38 concepts in a color-concept table. The results showed that the designers and non-designers had the same color associations and similar strengths of stereotypes for 17 concepts. The strongest color-concept stereotypes for both groups were red-danger, red-fire, and red-hot. However, the designers and non-designers had different color as

Winning and losing: Effects on impulsive action.

In the present study, we examined the effect of wins and losses on impulsive action in gambling (Experiments 1-3) and nongambling tasks (Experiments 4-5). In each experiment, subjects performed a simple task in which they had to win points. On each trial, they had to choose between a gamble and a nongamble. The gamble was always associated with a higher amount but a lower probability of winning than the nongamble. After subjects indicated their choice (i.e., gamble or not), feedback was presented. They had to press a key to start the next trial. Experiments 1-3 showed that, compared to the non

The effects of work-reinforcer schedules on skill acquisition for children with autism.

This study evaluated the effects of continuous and discontinuous work-reinforcer schedule arrangements on skill acquisition for three students with autism. Participants were initially exposed to both schedules in an alternating schedules condition where they were taught different but equivalent skills for each schedule. In the discontinuous schedule condition, participants completed work in small increments to gain access to a reinforcer for short periods of time. In the continuous schedule condition, participants completed larger increments of work to gain longer access to a reinforcer. Resul

Post-abortion contraception choices of women in Ghana: a one-year review.

Low rates of contraception in much of sub-Saharan Africa result in unplanned pregnancies, which in young, unmarried women often result in unsafe abortion. Increasing the use of highly effective forms of contraception has the potential to reduce the abortion-related mortality and morbidity. In this cross-sectional study, information collected by the post-abortion family planning counsellor was analysed. De-identified data from one year (June 2012-May 2013) were extracted from the logbook. Multivariate linear and logistic regression was performed. A total of 612 women received care for post-abor

An investigation into breast support and sports bra use in female runners of the 2012 London Marathon.

Although it is acknowledged that appropriate breast support during exercise is important, no published literature has assessed breast support usage in a cohort of female marathon runners. This study aimed to identify sport bra use and perceived importance of sports bra use in female marathon runners. Bra satisfaction, incidence of bra related issues and factors that influence the appropriateness of sports bras were also investigated. A 4-part, 30-question survey was administered to 1397 female runners at the 2012 London marathon registration and via an online survey. In total 1285 surveys were

Cyanogenesis of wild lima bean (Phaseolus lunatus L.) is an efficient direct defence in nature.

In natural systems plants face a plethora of antagonists and thus have evolved multiple defence strategies. Lima bean (Phaseolus lunatus L.) is a model plant for studies of inducible indirect anti-herbivore defences including the production of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and extrafloral nectar (EFN). In contrast, studies on direct chemical defence mechanisms as crucial components of lima beans' defence syndrome under natural conditions are nonexistent. In this study, we focus on the cyanogenic potential (HCNp; concentration of cyanogenic glycosides) as a crucial parameter determining lim

Having the nerve to home: trigeminal magnetoreceptor versus olfactory mediation of homing in pigeons.

The ability of pigeons to find their way home from unfamiliar sites located up to hundreds of kilometers away is well known, but the mechanisms underlying this ability remain controversial. One proposed mechanism is based on the suggestion that pigeons are equipped with magnetoreceptors that can enable the detection of either the earth's magnetic field and/or magnetic field anomalies in the local terrain over which the pigeons fly. Recent reports have suggested that these magnetoreceptors are located in the upper beak where they are innervated by the ophthalmic branch of the trigeminal nerve.

Effort and Substance Use: Differentiating Tobacco Use Through Reinforcement Learning of Effort Based Decision Making.

BACKGROUND: Effort-based decision making evaluates rewards relative to the effort required to obtain it, an important process of healthy goal-directed motivation and behavior. Computational models provide mechanistic insights underlying choice behavior and potential alterations in neuropsychiatric disorders, including substance use disorders. We applied computational models to effort-based choice behavior to characterize underlying decision processes and if these mechanisms differ by substance use status. METHODS: Participants completed the Effort Expenditure for Rewards Task, choosing betwee

Relationship between adolescent risk preferences on a laboratory task and behavioral measures of risk-taking.

PURPOSE: The goal of the study was to assess individual differences among adolescents regarding risk-taking behavior in the laboratory. The second aim was to evaluate whether the laboratory-based risk-taking behavior is associated with other behavioral and psychological measures associated with risk-taking behavior. METHODS: A total of 82 adolescents with no personal history of psychiatric disorder completed a computerized decision-making task, the Wheel of Fortune. On the basis of the choices made between clearly defined probabilities and real monetary outcomes, this task assesses risk prefe

Ancient Greek votive epigraphy: Ancient religion between individual choice and cultural trends.

Ancient votive inscriptions, numbering in the tens of thousands across the Mediterranean, offer direct evidence for religious practice but have rarely been studied comprehensively across time and space due to their sheer volume. This paper presents a "distant reading" analysis of approximately 11,000 Greek dedicatory inscriptions (sixth century BCE - seventh century CE) drawn primarily from the GIST/I.PHI digital corpus. By tagging inscriptions for key features (votive/dedicatory terminology, deities, motives, gender) and analyzing their distribution chronologically and geographically while co

Regret, uncertainty, and bounded rationality in norm-driven decisions.

This study introduces an agent-based model to examine how regret, uncertainty, and social norms interact to shape vaccination behavior during epidemics. The model integrates three behavioral mechanisms-anticipated regret, evolving norms, and uncertainty-dependent trust-within a unified learning framework. Grounded in psychology and behavioral economics, it captures how individuals make probabilistic choices influenced by material payoffs, fear, trust, and social approval. Simulations of the Susceptible-Infected-Recovered process show that choice precision has context-dependent effects. In the

From exemplars to categories: generalization of action-effect learning in a free-choice task.

A fundamental aspect of intentional action is the ability to generalize learned action-effect relations to novel situations. However, the mechanisms underlying such categorical generalization, particularly in the context of voluntary action selection, remain contested. Across four free-choice experiments, participants first learned that pressing each of two keys produced pictures from one of two categories. The learning experience ranged from repeated presentation of a single dog or car image to one-time presentation of many diverse animal or machine images. At test, participants saw novel pic
