Soluble trivalent chromium compounds (chromium potassium sulfate, chromium nitrate, chromium chloride, neochromium and chromium alum) were inactive for Salmonella typhimurium TA100, even at milligram amounts per plate. No effect could be detected either in the absence or in the presence of rat-liver, lung or muscle microsomal fractions, of rat-muscle mitochondria (with or without ATP), of oxidized glutathione (GSSG), or of human serum, plasma or erythrocyte lysates. Conversely, addition of a strongly oxidizing agent (potassium permanganate) resulted in toxic effects in plates incorporating mor

The data on the standards for chromium requirements and the safety of various chromium compounds and doses are reviewed. The 350-fold difference between the acceptable daily intake and the calculated reference dose for humans of 70 mg per day seems without precedent with respect to other nutritional minerals. Previous claims of mutagenic effects of chromium are of questionable relevance. While studies have found DNA fragmentation (clastogenic effects) by chromium picolinate, anecdotal reports of high-dose chromium picolinate toxicity are few and ambiguous. The beneficial effects of chromium on

Airborne hexavalent chromium (Cr[VI]) is a known human respiratory carcinogen and allergen. Workers in a variety of industries may be exposed to airborne hexavalent chromium, with exposures frequently occurring via inhalation and/or dermal contact. Analytical methods for the measurement of Cr(VI) compounds in workplace samples, rather than for the determination of total elemental chromium in workplace air, are often desired because exposure limit values for Cr(VI) compounds are much lower than for total Cr. For years, sampling and analytical test methods for airborne Cr(VI) have been investiga

A Kβ satellite peak in X-ray fluorescence (XRF) spectra is observed as a counterpart of the pre-edge peak of the X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES). In Kβ emission of chromium, a small satellite peak is observed at 5.983-5.988 keV only for hexavalent chromium compounds such as CrO(3), Na(2)CrO(7)·2H(2)O, Na(2)CrO(4)·4H(2)O, K(2)Cr(2)O(7), K(2)CrO(4), Zn(2)CrO(4)(OH)(2)·2H(2)O, PbCrO(4), and BaCrO(4), together with the main peak at 5.947 keV, while trivalent chromium compounds such as Cr(2)O(3) and Cr(OH)(3)·nH(2)O show only the main peak at 5.947 keV. This corresponds to the fact tha

INTRODUCTION: Genotoxicity of chemical compounds is primarily associated with the interaction with DNA, formation of mutations, damage to chromosomes and initiating carcinogenesis processes. Currently, many compounds found in the environment are considered to be genotoxic agents, among them chromium: trivalent (III) and hexavalent (VI). The genotoxicity of hexavalent (VI) chromium has been proven in numerous epidemiological, in vitro and in vivo studies. The main source of Cr (VI) is environmental pollution associated with its use in various industries. On the other hand, the role of chromium

Chromium picolinate is one of the most commonly used chromium dietary supplements available in the United States, and it has been marketed to consumers for use in weight loss, increasing muscle mass, and lowering serum cholesterol. Chromium picolinate is a synthetic compound that provides a bioavailable form of Cr(III) that is absorbed better than dietary chromium. However, there are several reports that it can have adverse effects. In order to study the mechanism of observed cellular toxicity and mutagenicity, chromium picolinate and its component compounds, chromium (III) chloride and picoli

This paper presents the basic assumptions of the concept of a new technology for the valorisation of chromium tannery waste. It assumes the use of an integrated system of the thermal pressure hydrolysis process and membrane filtration techniques for the recovery of chromium compounds and the use of a separated organic matter during anaerobic fermentation. According to the assumptions of the developed technological concept, at the first stage, the crushed mixture of chromium tannery waste is decomposed in the process of thermal pressure hydrolysis using appropriate process conditions in an alka

Chromium belongs to the group of trace elements hich are essential in numerous functions of the human body. Chromium deficiency may be responsible for various dysfunctions, whereas exposure to chromium at higher concentrations is toxic and may lead to the occurrence of neoplastic diseases. Epidemiological studies of chromium exposure proved its carcinogenity, and thus the IARC recognised Cr(VI) and its compounds as one of ascertained carcinogens. Some findings of these studies were reviewed in the first part of this work. The second part presents some molecular aspects of chromium carcinogenit

Despite chromium nicotinate's popular use as a chromium nutritional supplement, the structure and composition of chromium nicotinate have only been poorly described. As solid chromium nicotinate is intractable, being insoluble or unstable in common solvents, studies on the solid have been limited, and studies of the solution from which the "compound" precipitates have additionally provided little additional data. The results of mass spectrometric and spectroscopic investigations designed to further elucidate the structure and composition of chromium nicotinate are described. The results demons

The authors studied immune homeostasis parameters in chromium production workers and presented changes in cellular, humoral immunity and sensibilization to chromium in main occupational groups of workers. Findings are that occupational contact with chromium compounds results in T-immune deficiency. Allergic tests also revealed higher sensibilization to 6-valent chromium.

As the biologically active component of glucose tolerance factor (GTF), the essential trace mineral chromium is now being marked to athletes. GTF potentiates insulin activity and is responsible for normal insulin function. Thus, insulin's effects on carbohydrate, fat, and protein metabolism are dependent upon the maintenance of adequate chromium stores. Due to excessive chromium loss and marginal chromium intake, athletes may have an increased requirement for chromium. Therefore, in some circumstances the dietary supplementation of a chromium compound may be efficacious. The restoration and ma

As a result of a widespread application in numerous industrial processes, chromium is a contaminant of many environmental systems. Chromium and their compounds are toxic to both invertebrates and vertebrates and, for this reason, there has been a search for suitable and less toxic alternatives. Molybdenum compounds have been studied as alternative to chromium compounds for some industrial applications. The toxicity of chromium is well known but the effects of molybdenum and molybdenum mining on natural populations and communities of freshwater invertebrates have not often been studied. However

Sodium chromate (Na2CrO4) is the main semi-finished product for manufacturing all other chromium compounds with wide industrial applications. Unfortunately, the traditional processes for producing Na2CrO4 generate amounts of solid and liquid waste that pose serious threats to the environment and human health. Here, a green and convenient synthesis process for Na2CrO4 was developed by electrochemical oxidation of high carbon ferrochromium in sodium hydroxide aqueous solution at room temperature and atmosphere pressure. Through electrochemical oxidation process, Na2CrO4 was obtained from electro

Dozens of epidemiologic studies have been conducted since the late 1940s in an attempt to elucidate the relationship between exposure to chromium compounds and increased rates of certain cancers observed in several industries. The relationship between employment in industries producing chromium compounds from chromite ore and lung cancer has been well established in numerous studies. The relationship between exposure to certain chromium-based pigments and chromic acid and lung cancer, although not as strong, is fairly well accepted. The data concerning emissions from stainless-steel manufactur

Chromium(VI) compounds are well known to be potent toxic and carcinogenic agents. Because chromium(VI) is easily taken up by cells and is subsequently reduced to the trivalent form, the formation of chromium(III) or other intermediate oxidation states such as chromium(V) and (IV) is believed to play a role in the adverse biological effects of chromium(VI) compounds. Recent in vitro studies have shown that this reduction process generates free radical species such as active oxygen radicals. Furthermore, physiological antioxidants are reported to modify the genotoxic and toxic effects of chromat

Chromium and chromium containing compounds are discharged into the nature as waste from anthropogenic activities, such as industries, agriculture, forest farming, mining and metallurgy. Continued disposal of these compounds to the environment leads to development of various lethal diseases in both humans and animals. In this paper, we report a soil borne bacterium, B2-DHA that can be used as a vehicle to effectively remove chromium from the contaminated sources. B2-DHA is resistant to chromium with a MIC value of 1000 µg mL(-1) potassium chromate. The bacterium has been identified as a Gram ne

Chromium has various valence states and in the process of preparing chromium oxides with low valence state of chromium, chromium compounds with different valence state of chromium can usually be produced as intermediates. Due to the difference in property of these intermediates, they always have remarkable influences on the morphological characteristics of the final product. The composition of the intermediate was very complicated in the process of synthesizing chromium oxide with low valence state of chromium by reducing potassium chromate with hydrogen. To explore the reaction mechanism and

The effects of thiol compounds (L-cysteine ethyl ester, 2,3-dimercaptosuccinic acid, or 2,3-dimercapto-1-propanesulfonic acid) on the toxicity induced by chromate (potassium dichromate) were investigated in HeLa cells and mice. Chromate-induced cytotoxicity evaluated by inhibition of cell growth and chromium content of the cells was diminished by all of the thiol compounds tested when the cells were incubated in the medium with both chromate and one of the thiol compounds. In mice injected ip with a thiol compound immediately after injection of chromate, mortality, ornithine carbamyl transfera

Chromium was known for many years to be an element causing allergic reactions and having neurotoxic and carcinogenic effects. These effects can be observed especially in the case of hexavalent chromium. Only a little more than four decades ago trivalent chromium has been known as an essential element with relation to glycide and lipid metabolism. And only during several last years this chromium function has been revealed on a molecular level. After absorption in the gastrointestinal tract, chromium is most likely transported to cells bound to the plasma protein transferrin. Insulin initiates c
