Prevalence of the Antibiotic Resistance Genes in Coagulase-Positive-and Negative-Staphylococcus in Chicken Meat Retailed to Consumers.

The use of antibiotics in farm management (growing crops and raising animals) has become a major area of concern. Its implications is the consequent emergence of antibiotic resistant bacteria (ARB) and accordingly their access into the human food chain with passage of antibiotic resistance genes (ARG) to the normal human intestinal microbiota and hence to other pathogenic bacteria causative human disease. Therefore, we pursued in this study to unravel the frequency and the quinolone resistance determining region, mecA and cfr genes of methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA), methi

Frequent nasopharyngeal suctioning as a risk factor associated with neonatal coagulase-negative staphylococcal colonisation and sepsis.

INTRODUCTION: This case-control study aimed to determine whether catheter use was significantly associated with coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS) colonisation and/or sepsis in neonates. METHODS: Weekly swabs of the nose, umbilicus, rectum, wounds, eye discharge and intravenous catheter tips (after removal) of infants admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit of Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Medical Centre, Malaysia, were cultured. CoNS sepsis was diagnosed if pure growth of CoNS was cultured from the peripheral blood specimen of symptomatic infants. For each infant with CoNS colonis

Susceptibility patterns of coagulase-negative staphylococci to several newer antimicrobial agents in comparison with vancomycin and oxacillin.

Coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS) have emerged as important nosocomial pathogens. CoNS resistance to meticillin and other semisynthetic penicillins is now common. Elevated vancomycin minimal inhibitory concentrations (MICs) have been reported and are associated with worse treatment outcomes. Several newer antibiotics have recently become available for the treatment of Gram-positive infections. The purpose of this study was to assess the in vitro activity of telavancin, daptomycin, linezolid and tigecycline in comparison with oxacillin and vancomycin against 653 non-duplicate clinical iso

Coagulase-negative Staphylococcus bacteraemia accounts for one third of Staphylococcus bacteraemia in a French university hospital.

BACKGROUND: We sought to determine the epidemiological patterns of Staphylococcus bacteraemia, with a focus on the proportion of coagulase-negative Staphylococcus (CoNS) as compared to Staphylococcus aureus bacteraemia, and the prognosis. METHODS: All patients with significant Staphylococcus bacteraemia at the university hospital in Reims in 2008 were included in the study. Data were retrieved retrospectively from the patient records using a standardized case investigation form. Quantitative variables were compared using the Mann-Whitney U-test and qualitative variables were compared using Fi

Characterization of coagulase-negative staphylococcal isolates from blood with reduced susceptibility to glycopeptides and therapeutic options.

BACKGROUND: Coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS) are a major cause of nosocomial blood stream infection, especially in critically ill and haematology patients. CoNS are usually multidrug-resistant and glycopeptide antibiotics have been to date considered the drugs of choice for treatment. The aim of this study was to characterize CoNS with reduced susceptibility to glycopeptides causing blood stream infection (BSI) in critically ill and haematology patients at the University Hospital Tor Vergata, Rome, Italy, in 2007. METHODS: Hospital microbiology records for transplant haematology and IC

Prevalence of peritonitis-associated coagulase-negative staphylococci on the skin of continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis patients.

The predominance of coagulase-negative staphylococci as normal skin flora is thought to be a factor in their association with episodes of peritonitis in patients undergoing continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis. We investigated the prevalence of peritonitis-associated strains on the skin of 28 patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis. Coagulase-negative staphylococci were the most frequently isolated organisms, comprising 47% of peritoneal dialysis fluid isolates and 59% of body site isolates. A total of 142 coagulase-negative staphylococci were speciated, tested for their antimicrobial sen

Occurrence and expression of imipemide (N-formimidoyl thienamycin) resistance in clinical isolates of coagulase-negative staphylococci.

More than 500 clinical isolates were screened for resistance to a number of antibiotics, including imipemide (N-formimidoyl thienamycin [MK0787]). Of the 25 coagulase-negative staphylococcal isolates present in the screening sample, almost one-third showed one of two patterns of imipemide resistance. One pattern apparently involves constitutive expression of drug resistance, whereas the other pattern seems to result from an inducible resistance having an apparent induction threshold higher than the minimal inhibitory concentration of imipemide. The mechanism(s) responsible for this imipemide r

Staphylococcus hemolyticus: The Most Common and Resistant Coagulase-Negative Staphylococcus Species Causing Bacteremia in North India.

INTRODUCTION: Coagulase-negative Staphylococcus (CoNS) species are normal skin commensals but may also cause bacteremia. Therefore, isolating a CoNS species on blood culture often leads to a diagnostic dilemma about whether to consider the isolate as a true pathogen or not. This study was done to understand the distribution of various CoNS species in bloodstream infections, determine their antibiotic resistance patterns, and identify possible risk factors and patient outcomes in hospital settings. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Inpatients with confirmed bacteremia defined as isolation of the same CoN

Targeting Coagulase Activity in Staphylococcus aureus Bacteraemia: A Randomized Controlled Single-Centre Trial of Staphylothrombin Inhibition.

BACKGROUND: Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) bacteraemia is frequent and carries a high morbidity and mortality. Coagulases secreted by S. aureus initiate blood coagulation by directly activating prothrombin. This pathogen-activated coagulation is insensitive to most antithrombotic drugs, with the exception of small molecule direct thrombin inhibitors (DTIs). DTIs inhibit the coagulase-prothrombin complex, or staphylothrombin, and improve outcome in preclinical models of S. aureus infection. OBJECTIVE: A single-centre, randomized, controlled feasibility and safety trial of staphylothrombin i

[Microbiological and molecular genetic characteristics of coagulase-negative staphylococcal isolates from neonates in intensive care unit].

The problem of hospital-acquired infections due to coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS) in neonatal intensive care units is crucial over the last 20 years in the world. Neonates with very low or extremely low body weight belong to a special group of risks by the CoNS infection. However, in Russia CoNS up to now are frequently considered as contaminants and not as the main etiologic factors of pneumonia and sepsis in extremely premature infants. It was shown that hospital strains of CoNS causing fatal infections in extremely premature infants are always present in intensive care units.

Phenotypic and genotypic characterization of antimicrobial resistance in coagulase-negative staphylococci from bone lesions in broiler chickens.

BACKGROUND: Lameness in broiler chickens, frequently caused by bacterial chondronecrosis with osteomyelitis (BCO), poses a major challenge to intensive poultry production due to its adverse impact on animal welfare and farm economics. While Staphylococcus aureus has traditionally been considered the principal staphylococcal pathogen in poultry, coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS) are increasingly implicated in skeletal infections. This study aimed to characterize the phenotypic and genotypic antimicrobial resistance profiles of 93 CoNS isolates representing 12 Staphylococcus species. Isola

Companion animals as potentially important reservoir of methicillin-resistant and virulent strains of coagulase-positive Staphylococcus spp.

BACKGROUND: Microorganisms such as Staphylococcus spp., in particular coagulase-positive strains, continue to pose a serious challenge to human and veterinary medicine. These bacteria can be a component of the natural biota of the body but can also cause infections in companion animals, including dogs and cats. Therefore, the aim of this study was to analyze the occurrence of Staphylococcus bacteria in companion animals, with particular emphasis on predilection sites, and to characterize these strains in the context of their epidemiological significance and threat to human health. RESULTS: We
