Cryptosporidiosis in man: parasite life cycle and fine structural pathology.

The Cryptosporidium here described is a very small (3-4 micron) opportunistic pathogenic coccidian parasite. Through seven known human enteric infections it is now associated with diarrhoea in immunosuppressed or immunodeficient individuals. Neither the full pathogenic potential nor the complete life cycle of this parasite are known, and there is no adequate chemotherapeutic agent with which to eradicate it. What is known of its intracellular intestinal forms and the fine structural changes occurring in parasitised epithelial cells has been described. A viral complication of the infection is d

Spontaneous cryptosporidiosis in an adult female rabbit.

An asymptomatic adult female rabbit had intestinal cryptosporidiosis. The ileum had blunted villi, a decrease in villus-crypt ratio and a mild edema in the lamina propria. Transmission electron microscopy showed the parasite to be a Cryptosporidium similar to those reported in mouse, guinea pig, lamb, calf, horse, monkey and man. This organism is referred to as Cryptosporidium cuniculus. Scanning electron microscopy on ileal mucosa showed altered intestinal microvilli in the attachment of the cryptosporidia. It is postulated that the organism was enveloped by the microvilli of the ileal epithe

Prevalence and risk factors for gastrointestinal parasites in small-scale pig enterprises in Central and Eastern Uganda.

In Eastern Africa, small-scale pig keeping has emerged as a popular activity to generate additional household income. Infections of pigs with gastrointestinal helminths can limit production output, increase production costs, and pose zoonotic risks. A cross-sectional, community-based study in three districts in Eastern and Central Uganda examined the prevalence of gastrointestinal helminthes and associated risk factors in 932 randomly sampled pigs. Using the combined sedimentation-flotation method, 61.4 % (58.2-64.5 %, 95 % confidence interval [CI]) tested positive for one or more gastrointest

Intestinal parasitic infections and micronutrient deficiency: a review.

Malnutrition including vitamin A and iron deficiency and parasitic diseases have a strikingly similar geographical distribution with the same people experiencing both insults together for much of their lives. Parasitic infections are thought to contribute to child malnutrition and micronutrient deficiency through subtle reduction in digestion and absorption, chronic inflammation and loss of nutrients. Parasites may affect the intake of food; it's subsequent digestion and absorption, metabolism and the maintenance of nutrient pools. The most important parasites related to nutritional status are

Extracellular like-gregarine stages of Cryptosporidium parvum.

The present study confirms the existence of extracellular stages of Cryptosporidiumparvum during in vitro culture on MDCK, HCT 8 and Vero cells as well as alveolar macrophages, by optic, Nomarski and transmission electron microscopy images. Extracellular trophozoite/gamont, stages in syzygy, zygotes and spores with eight sporozoites were seen in the supernatant of the cultures. The first ultrastructural images of extracellular stages of C. parvum are shown in this study. The morphology of these stages, which have characteristics similar to those of some gregarines, support the contention that

Case report: Nitazoxanide treatment failure in chronic isosporiasis.

We report a 60-year-old immunocompetent patient with chronic biliary isosporiasis who failed to respond to orally administered cotrimoxazole prophylaxis and orally administered treatment with nitazoxanide, a 5-nitrothiazole benzamide compound. Severe malabsorption was regarded as responsible for the subtherapeutic levels of nitazoxanide in plasma and bile, resulting in treatment failure. Intravenously administered cotrimoxazole stopped the shedding of Isospora belli oocysts in bile within 5 days, excluding initially suspected resistance to cotrimoxazole. Patients with malabsorption and cholang

[An hypothesis of the pathogenesis of diarrhoea in the rabbit based on a study of intestinal contents].

Experimental diarrhoea was induced in young rabbits by inoculation with Eimeria intestinalis and E. flavescens. The mineral composition of the intestinal contents was studied and compared to those of control animals. In the jejunum, ileum, caecum, proximal and distal colon, the sum (Na+ + K+) was linearly related to the water content of those segments. The regression lines were the same for all the animals, but the means were different, indicating that the defect in water absorption was due to a lack of sodium reabsorption at the site of coccidia implantation. In the colon, sodium was reabsorb

Self-mating in the definitive host potentiates clonal outbreaks of the apicomplexan parasites Sarcocystis neurona and Toxoplasma gondii.

Tissue-encysting coccidia, including Toxoplasma gondii and Sarcocystis neurona, are heterogamous parasites with sexual and asexual life stages in definitive and intermediate hosts, respectively. During its sexual life stage, T. gondii reproduces either by genetic out-crossing or via clonal amplification of a single strain through self-mating. Out-crossing has been experimentally verified as a potent mechanism capable of producing offspring possessing a range of adaptive and virulence potentials. In contrast, selfing and other life history traits, such as asexual expansion of tissue-cysts by or

Depletion of CD25+ cells restores Th1, Th2 and Th17 responses and mitigates Eimeria maxima infection in chickens.

Chicken coccidia can suppress the host immune response through CD4+CD25+T cells, compromising the effectiveness of immune prophylaxis and potentially leading to immune failure. However, the role of chicken CD4+CD25+T cells in chicken coccidia infection is not well understood. This study aimed to elucidate the immunomodulatory function of CD4+CD25+T cells during Eimeria maxima infection and assess the impact of CD25+ cell depletion on immune response and infection outcomes. The study comprised three trials: (1) examining CD4+CD25+T cells and cytokine changes post-E. maxima infection, (2) assess

Effects of fermented Artemisia annua on the intestinal microbiota and metabolites of Hu lambs with naturally infected with Eimeria spp.

BACKGROUND: Sheep coccidiosis could disturb the balance of intestinal microbiota, causing diarrhea, and even death in lambs. Chemical drugs are the primary method of treating sheep coccidiosis, but their use will bring drug resistance, toxic side effects, drug residues, and other problems. Chinese herbal medicines are investigated as alternative methods for controlling coccidian infections. METHODS: In this study, the effect of fermented Artemisia annua (FA) on oocysts per gram (OPG), average daily gain (ADG), and expression of inflammatory factors were investigated in lambs that were natural

Portulaca oleracea exhibited anti-coccidian activity, fortified the gut microbiota of Hu lambs.

Coccidia of the genus Eimeria are important pathogens that cause coccidiosis in livestock and poultry. Due to the expansion of intensive farming, coccidiosis has become more difficult to control. In addition, the continued use of anti-coccidiosis drugs has led to drug resistance and residue. Some herbs used in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) have been shown to alleviate the clinical symptoms of coccidiosis, while enhancing immunity and growth performance (GP) of livestock and poultry. Previous in vitro and in vivo studies have reported that the TCM herb Portulaca oleracea exhibited anti-par

[Comparison between the modified Ziehl-Neelsen and Acid-Fast-Trichrome methods for fecal screening of Cryptosporidium parvum and Isospora belli].

Due to the importance of Cryptosporidium parvum, Cyclospora cayetanensis and Isospora belli as opportunistic parasites, it is essential for laboratories to morphologically differentiate these coccidia. Among the recommended methods for diagnosis of C. parvum and I. belli is the Modified Ziehl-Neelsen stain (MZN) and recently a new technique, the Acid-Fast-Trichrome (AFT) was proposed. The purpose of this study was to compare the AFT and MZN techniques regarding the detection of C. parvum and I. belli oocysts in stool samples of HIV-positive patients. According to the presence (n=60) or absence

Adenovirus group II-like infection in chukar partridges (Alectoris chukar).

Seven live 5-to-6-wk-old chukar partridges (Alectoris chukar) were examined because of increased lacrimation, swollen eyelids, and increased mortality. Gross lesions consisted of mildly enlarged and mottled white spleens, swollen eyelids with external scab formation, and watery intestinal contents. Microscopically, there were increased numbers of mononuclear phagocytic system cells in the spleen, some of which contained faintly staining basophilic intranuclear inclusion bodies, blepharoconjunctivitis, enteritis associated with coccidia and crop mycosis. A new acid-fast trichrome stain for simultaneous detection of Cryptosporidium parvum and microsporidial species in stool specimens.

The detection in stool specimens of Cryptosporidium parvum and microsporidia, the most frequent parasitic pathogens causing diarrhea in AIDS patients, until now has depended on two different staining methods. However, since double infections occur and minimization of laboratory costs is mandatory, development of a method for simultaneous detection of these parasites appeared desirable. We report on a new, inexpensive, and easy-to-perform staining procedure to demonstrate both acid-fast oocysts of C. parvum and other coccidia, as well as microsporidial spores. This acid-fast trichrome stain yie

Spatial, Temporal, and Host-Specificity Patterns of Three Genera of Blood Coccidian Parasites in Two Syntopic Mediterranean Lizards.

We investigated the phenological variation of three genera of blood parasites of lizards (Schellackia, Karyolysus, and Lankesterella) using samples of 275 adult Psammodromus algirus and 138 Acanthodactylus erythrurus collected from April to September in 2021 and 2022. Both years experienced heatwaves, and 2022 had the warmest summer on historical record for the region. We captured lizards in two close areas that differed in vegetation quality due to differential human pressure. We found that Schellackia and Karyolysus more frequently infected P. algirus, whereas Lankesterella infected A. eryth

Experimental Infection and Clearance of Coccidian Parasites in Mercury-Exposed Zebra Finches.

Mercury is a globally distributed, persistent environmental contaminant that affects the health of many taxa. It can suppress the immune system, which often plays a role in defense against parasites. However, there have been few investigations of whether mercury affects the abilities of animals to resist parasitic infection. Here, we exposed zebra finches to a lifetime dietary exposure of methylmercury (1.2 μg/g wet weight) and experimentally infected them with coccidian parasites to examine the effect of methylmercury exposure on parasitic infection. The mercury-exposed birds did not have an
