INTRODUCTION: Tinnitus is prevalent in 66-88% of cochlear implant users. The reason for this high prevalence is that hearing impairment is the most common cause of tinnitus.
OBJECTIVE: This study aims to determine the effect of cochlear implant and to compare the severity of tinnitus and depression in adult cochlear implant users with tinnitus.
METHODS: Patients diagnosed with tinnitus filled out the Tinnitus Handicap Inventory and the Beck Depression Inventory during CI candidate evaluation. The audiological follow-up in the present study included only patients suffering from tinnitus befor

The indications for cochlear implantation have gradually expanded as advancements in technology have evolved, resulting in improved audiologic outcomes for both adult and children. There remains a significant underutilization of cochlear implant technology in the United States, and recognition of the potential benefits of cochlear implantation for non-traditional indications is critical for encouraging the evolution of candidacy criteria. Adult cochlear implantation candidacy has progressed from patients with bilateral profound sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) to include patients with greater

BACKGROUND: It is known that cochlear implantation may alter the inner ear and induce vestibular disorders.
RESEARCH QUESTION: How does cochlear implantation influence gait stability? Material and Methods. An experimental group of twenty-one subjects scheduled for cochlear implantation underwent gait testing twice, on the day before cochlear implantation (BCI) and three months after cochlear implantation (ACI), using a motion capture system. A control group of 30 age-matched healthy individuals were also tested.
RESULTS: In the experimental group, the gait stability ratio (GSR) was found to

Mucopolysaccharidosis IVA (OMIM 253000; also known as Morquio A syndrome) is associated with skeletal, airway, and hearing abnormalities. Cochlear implantation is an effective intervention for patients with severe-to-profound hearing loss. Patients can gain substantial improvement in auditory performance, speech perception, and their quality of life from cochlear implantation. Although severe progressive sensorineural hearing loss is a common feature of mucopolysaccharidosis IVA, no detailed description of cochlear implantation for mucopolysaccharidosis IVA has been reported. To review the eff

Cockayne Syndrome (CS) is a rare, autosomal recessive disorder characterized by a spectrum of phenotypic abnormalities, including progressive sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) that involves both peripheral and central components. To date, a single series of CS patients undergoing cochlear implant (CI) placement has been reported; this study reports on additional previously unreported pediatric CI recipients. Subjective benefits were noted early after activation in both patients, and speech perception scores improved over time as well, varying from 42 to 70% (versus 0-12% previously). Thus, we

Criteria for cochlear implants are expanding and now include children with disabilities in addition to hearing loss, such as those with Kabuki syndrome (KS). This case report describes language outcomes and changes in the quality of life of a female child with KS after cochlear implantation. The subject had a profound progressive sensorineural hearing loss, cognitive impairments, and other disabilities and communicated using vocalized sounds and the Dutch Sign Language. After cochlear implantation at an age of nine years and three months, the patient displayed no progress in speech production

CONCLUSION: Perioperative Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) scores may be beneficial for predicting prognosis of cochlear implantation (CI). A positive attitude for social interaction in particular correlates with a better speech outcome. Proper perioperative psychological management may, therefore, assist in the auditory rehabilitation of CI patients.
OBJECTIVE: To determine the perioperative psychological state of CI patients and its relationship with patient prognosis after CI.
METHODS: This study prospectively enrolled 29 patients who underwent CI from 2005-2013. The MMP

Sickle cell disease (SCD) is associated with sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL). Although the hearing loss is usually mild, some develop severe-to-profound hearing loss, in whom cochlear implants (CI) may be an option. We present the cases of two children with SCD who developed bilateral severe-to-profound SNHL and underwent cochlear implantation. One patient became profoundly deaf after an acute episode of dizziness. Imaging indicated bilateral cochlear ossification, making subsequent cochlear implant surgery challenging. The second patient developed bilateral severe-to-profound SNHL following

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Ménière's disease (MD) that results in bilateral severe to profound sensorineural hearing loss is a rare indication for cochlear implantation; only a few studies exist documenting performance in these patients. The primary objective was to compare the difference in preoperative to 12-month postoperative speech perception scores among subjects with MD and controls. Groupwise comparisons of secondary postoperative outcomes (Tinnitus Handicap Inventory [THI] scores, 36-Item Short Form [SF-36] scores, and postoperative dizziness) were also performed.
METHODS: A retrospectiv

Intralabyrinthine schwannomas are rare tumors of the distal ends of the cochlear and vestibular nerve. Their presence can be debilitating secondary to symptoms of hearing loss, vertigo, tinnitus, and imbalance. Currently, treatment to restore hearing in those who have become profoundly deaf is not attempted. Additionally, resection in patients with functioning hearing is rare, as the surgery assures deafness. We report the first case demonstrating the feasibility of resection of an intralabyrinthine schwannoma with immediate cochlear implantation. This technique addresses the patients hearing
