Coffee consumption and risk of aortic valve stenosis: A prospective study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Coffee contains many biologically active compounds with potential adverse or beneficial effects on the cardiovascular system. Whether coffee consumption is associated with the risk of aortic valve stenosis (AVS) is unknown. The purpose of this study was therefore to examine the association between coffee consumption and AVS incidence. METHODS AND RESULTS: This prospective study included 71 178 men and women who provided information on their coffee consumption through a questionnaire at baseline. Incident cases of AVS were identified through linkage with the Swedish Nation

Associations of coffee consumption and caffeine intake with mammographic breast density.

PURPOSE: Previous studies suggest that coffee and caffeine intake may be associated with reduced breast cancer risk. We investigated the association of coffee and caffeine intake with mammographic breast density by woman's menopausal status and, in postmenopausal women, by hormone therapy (HT). METHODS: This study included 4130 cancer-free women within the Nurses' Health Study and Nurses' Health Study II cohorts. Percent breast density (PD) was measured from digitized film mammograms using a computer-assisted thresholding technique and square root-transformed for the analysis. Average cumulat

Impact of Coffee and Cacao Purine Metabolites on Neuroplasticity and Neurodegenerative Disease.

Increasing evidence suggests that regular consumption of coffee, tea and dark chocolate (cacao) can promote brain health and may reduce the risk of age-related neurodegenerative disorders. However, the complex array of phytochemicals in coffee and cacao beans and tea leaves has hindered a clear understanding of the component(s) that affect neuronal plasticity and resilience. One class of phytochemicals present in relatively high amounts in coffee, tea and cacao are methylxanthines. Among such methylxanthines, caffeine has been the most widely studied and has clear effects on neuronal network a

Coffee-Antihypertensive Drug Interaction: A Hemodynamic and Pharmacokinetic Study With Felodipine.

OBJECTIVES: A period of abstinence from coffee to permit caffeine elimination appears to enable increased blood pressure on subsequent exposure. We hypothesized that this would offset the antihypertensive effect of the dihydropyridine calcium channel blocker felodipine. METHODS: A randomized, single-dose, crossover study assessed hemodynamic and pharmacokinetic effects following 2 days without coffee and caffeine-containing foods. Consistently brewed black coffee (2×300ml), felodipine maximum recommended dose (10mg), and coffee plus felodipine were tested in middle-aged normotensive subjects.

Maternal cigarette, alcohol, and coffee consumption in relation to risk of clubfoot.

BACKGROUND: Clubfoot is associated with maternal cigarette smoking in several studies, but it is not clear if this association is confined to women who smoke throughout the at-risk period. Maternal alcohol and coffee drinking have not been well studied in relation to clubfoot. METHODS: The present study used data from a population-based case-control study of clubfoot conducted in Massachusetts, New York, and North Carolina from 2007 to 2011. Mothers of 646 isolated clubfoot cases and 2037 controls were interviewed about pregnancy events and exposures, including the timing and frequency of cig

Coffee or tea consumption and the risk of rheumatoid arthritis: a meta-analysis.

Meta-analysis of the cohort studies revealed a trend of an association between total coffee intake and RA incidence (RR of the highest vs. the lowest group = 1.309, 95 % confidence interval [CI] = 0.967-1.771, p = 0.085). Meta-analysis of case-control studies showed a significant association between total coffee intake and RA incidence (RR = 1.201, 95 % CI =1.058-1.361, p = 0.005). There were differences in the reference groups (all categories of coffee) between the case-control meta-analysis that showed a significant association and the cohort studies where meta-analysis results were non-sign

Antioxidant and genoprotective effects of spent coffee extracts in human cells.

Spent coffee has been shown as a good source of hydrophilic antioxidant compounds. The ability of two spent coffee extracts rich in caffeoylquinic acids, mainly dicaffeoylquinic acids, and caffeine (Arabica filter and Robusta espresso) to protect against oxidation and DNA damage in human cells (HeLa) was evaluated at short (2 h) and long (24 h) exposure times. Cell viability (MTT) was not affected by spent coffee extracts (>80%) up to 1000 μg/mL after 2 h. Both spent coffee extracts significantly reduced the increase of ROS level and DNA strand breaks (29-73% protection by comet assay) induced

Coffee consumption and risk of incident gout in men: a prospective study.

OBJECTIVE: Coffee is one of the most widely consumed beverages in the world and may affect the risk of gout via various mechanisms. We prospectively evaluated the relationship between coffee intake and the risk of incident gout in a large cohort of men. METHODS: Over a 12-year period, we studied 45,869 men with no history of gout at baseline. Intake of coffee, decaffeinated coffee, tea, and total caffeine was assessed every 4 years through validated questionnaires. We used a supplementary questionnaire to ascertain whether participants met the American College of Rheumatology survey criteria

Coffee intake and risk of hip fracture in women in northern Italy.

BACKGROUND: Information on a possible relation between coffee, caffeine, and other methylxanthine-containing beverages and hip fracture is relatively scanty and controversial. We present here the results of a case-control study conducted in northern Italy. METHODS: A total of 279 cases of hip fracture and 1,061 controls in hospital for acute, nonneoplastic nontraumatic, non-hormone-related diseases were interviewed during their hospital stay. Odds ratios (OR) and their 95% confidence intervals (CI) according to consumption of coffee and other methylxanthine-containing beverages were derived f

Coffee and alcohol intake as predictors of smoking cessation and tobacco withdrawal.

In one study of 105 smokers who received physician advice plus placebo gum and in another study of 630 self-quitters, neither the presence or absence, nor amount of precessation alcohol, nor coffee intake, nor changes in alcohol or coffee intake postcessation, predicted relapse or most withdrawal symptoms. The one possible exception was that heavy caffeine and alcohol users reported a greater increase in hunger and craving postcessation; however, these effects were not consistent across measures, follow-ups, and studies. Our results are inconsistent with theories that caffeine intoxication fro

Factors relating to the development of respiratory symptoms in coffee process workers.

After several cases of occupational asthma had been reported in a coffee processing factory in England, 197 coffee workers representing 80% of the production workforce were studied to determine the factors affecting the development of work related respiratory symptoms of wheeze, cough, and dyspnoea. Two computer administered questionnaires concerning the presence of respiratory symptoms and the occurrence of work related respiratory symptoms were used. Workers underwent skin prick testing to green coffee bean extract (GCB) and 11 common inhalant allergen extracts and bronchial provocation test

Genomic Variation and Phenotypic Diversity of Coffee-Derived Lactiplantibacillus plantarum Isolates.

Lactiplantibacillus plantarum exhibits substantial strain-level genomic diversity that may contribute to variation in stress tolerance and functional properties. Five isolates recovered from spontaneously fermented red coffee cherries were analyzed by whole-genome resequencing and phenotypic characterization. Single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and short insertions and deletions (InDels) were identified and functionally annotated. SNPs predominated, ranging from 16,865 to 20,280 per isolate, with CATR21 showing the highest SNP and InDel counts. Synonymous variants were the most frequent pre

Comparative Metabolomic Profiling of Roasted Coffee Beans From Taiwan and Brazil.

RATIONALE: Taiwan produces high-value specialty coffee on a limited scale, whereas Brazil is the largest global supplier and a major source of imports to Taiwan. For food authenticity, differentiation of roasted coffee from these origins is important. However, few metabolomics-based traceability studies have yet been conducted on Taiwan-roasted coffee. METHODS: In this study, metabolic profiling was applied to evaluate origin-related chemical signatures in Arabica roasted coffee beans from Taiwan and Brazil. An untargeted metabolomic workflow of integrating full scan and data-dependent acquis

Enhancing Arabica and Robusta coffee prices forecasting through machine learning approaches.

Machine learning was applied to predict Arabica and Robusta coffee prices 2-6 months ahead using climatic, production, and economic data from 2009 to 2025. SHAP analysis revealed that global and Brazilian stock levels, Vietnamese drought, Colombian rainfall, and U.S. dollar exchange rate were the most influential drivers of price variation, showing that even features with weak simple correlations can have high predictive power. We compared Multilayer Perceptron (MLP), Extreme Learning Machine (ELM), Random Forest (RF), XGBoost, and two stacking configurations (RF/XGBoost/ELM) and (RF/XGBoost),

SSViT-YOLOv11: fusing lightweight YOLO & ViT for coffee fruit maturity detection.

Accurate identification of coffee fruit maturity is critical for optimizing harvest timing and ensuring bean quality, but manual inspection is time-consuming and prone to subjectivity. Automated visual detection faces challenges including subtle color differences among maturity stages, frequent occlusions within fruit clusters, variable lighting, and abundant small-scale targets. In this paper, we propose SSViT-YOLOv11, an improved YOLOv11n-based framework that integrates Single Scale Vision Transformer (SSViT) into the backbone and refines multi-scale feature fusion to enhance context modelin
