BACKGROUND: Cogan syndrome is a rare autoimmune disorder characterised by ocular inflammation and audiovestibular dysfunction. Similar clinical phenotypes are being described in association with the haemostatic biomaterial chitosan. This "Cogan-like" entity being referred to as chitosan-associated vasculitis with eye and sensorineural symptoms (CAVES), is increasingly being reported in the literature.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report the first Irish case of a 37-year-old woman presenting twenty-four hours postpartum with bilateral ocular pain, reduced visual acuity, and photophobia following mana

Cogan's syndrome or non-syphilitic interstitial keratitis with vestibule-auditory dysfunction is a serious and under-recognised complication of rheumatoid arthritis. It is an autoimmune condition characterised by inflammatory infiltrates on the cornea and extensive vestibulocochlear damage. If left untreated, patients progress to develop profound hearing loss. We present a case that was incorrectly diagnosed and treated as conjunctivitis by several emergency departments prior to being correctly recognised as Cogan's syndrome.

Here we report for the first time on the maternal transmission of mild Coffin-Siris syndrome (CSS) caused by a SOX11 missense variant. We present two sisters with intellectual disability and muscular hypotonia born to non-consanguineous parents. Cogan ocular motor apraxia was present in both sisters. Body measurements were in a normal range. The mother and both daughters showed hypoplastic nails of the fifth toes. A missense variant in SOX11 [c.139 G > A; p.(Gly47Ser)] in both sisters and their mother was identified. Since 2014, variants in SOX11 are known to cause mild CSS. Most described pat

A 43-year-old woman was found to have multiple cranial neuritis affections, present as an isolated disorder over a long period, and characterized by bilateral deafness and associated lesions of the VII and V cranial nerves. On investigation, visual disturbances were discovered which were of a transitory nature and made up a total clinical picture suggesting Cogan's syndrome. Neuropathological examination revealed the presence of typical periarteritis nodosa lesions in the cranial nerves. The authors suggest, therefore, that certain cases described as Cogan's syndrome are in fact particular for

INTRODUCTION: Cogan's syndrome is a rare autoimmune disease typically affecting the ocular and audiovestibular system. Inner ear involvement is associated with a poor prognosis, as despite therapy, over 50% of patients develop profound deafness. The standard treatment remains the use of high dose glucocorticosteroids and immunosuppressants. Studies from recent years have reported significantly higher rates of improvement and recovery among patients treated with biologic disease modifying antirheumatic drugs (bDMARDs), particularly infliximab.
CASE DESCRIPTION: We report the case of a 39-year-

Meniere's syndrome is defined as the clinical disorder associated with the histopathological finding of endolymphatic hydrops (ELH). Clinically, Meniere's syndrome includes the following features: recurrent, spontaneous episodic vertigo; hearing loss; aural fullness; and tinnitus. Recognized causes of Meniere's syndrome include: 1) idiopathic, also known as Meniere's disease; 2) posttraumatic, following head injury or ear surgery; 3) post-infectious or delayed-onset Meniere's syndrome following a viral infection, usually mumps or measles; 4) late stage syphilitic; 5) classic Cogan's syndrome w

There is some evidence in the past decade that a similar syndrome to Cogan's syndrome may exist in which a scleritis substitutes for the nonsyphilitic interstitial keratitis. A case is reported of a female patient, aged 39, with nonrheumatoid scleritis and associated bilateral perceptive deafness.

Systemic vasculitis is a group of rare diseases that share an essential characteristic: inflammation of blood vessel walls. This injury occurs during the disease course, but specific features vary for each entity. In this paper, we will address relevant aspects of the newest monogenic mutation vasculitis, such as deficiency of adenosine deaminase 2 (ADA2) and VEXAS syndrome (UBA1), and other relevant vasculitis, such as Cogan syndrome and Susac syndrome that may share some similarities with them.

"Typical" Cogan's syndrome is defined as a non-syphilitic interstitial keratitis associated with audio-vestibular resembling Ménière's disease with a 2-year maximum delay between these 2 organ impairment. Cogan syndrome is classified as "atypical" in the absence of interstitial keratitis and the presence of other inflammatory eye manifestations, an audio-vestibular impairment different from typical Menière-like disease, or a delay longer than 2 years between eye and audio-vestibular manifestations. Constitutional signs and large-vessel vasculitis is also possible, mostly affecting the thoracic

The purpose of this study was to develop a high-risk clinical profile of patients with autoimmune (immune-mediated) inner-ear disease. The records of 52 patients diagnosed over the past 5 years were reviewed. Age, sex, bilateral versus unilateral involvement, otologic symptoms, concomitant systemic immune disease, and presenting clinical diagnoses were recorded. The presenting diagnoses were Cogan's syndrome, Meniere's syndrome, Dandy's syndrome without hearing loss, or progressive sensorineural hearing loss without dizziness. Because Cogan's and Dandy's syndromes were relatively uncommon, the

BACKGROUND: Cogan's disease is a diagnostic challenge. The typical form of this chronic inflammatory disease is characterized by non-syphilitic interstitial keratitis and acute audiovestibular impairment.
CASE REPORTS: The first patient had "typical" symptoms of Cogan's syndrome with recurrent keratoconjunctivitis, severe hearing loss and vertigo. Systemic cardiovascular manifestations occurred in the further course of the disease with multiple vascular stenoses of the carotids and vessels of the lower limbs. The second patient had "atypical" symptoms of Cogan's disease with progressive bilat

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the spectrum of iridocorneal endothelial syndrome, to our knowledge, never studied previously in Orientals.
METHODS: From 1986 to 1998, we examined 60 consecutive patients (20 men, 40 women) with characteristic signs of iridocorneal endothelial syndrome and compared the clinical manifestations to those reported in white patients.
RESULTS: Cogan-Reese syndrome (CRS) was most common (38 patients), while 14 patients had Chandler syndrome (CS), and 8 had progressive iris atrophy. Three patients initially classified as having CS and 1 as having progressive iris atrophy prog

Iridocorneal endothelial (ICE) syndrome is a rare acquired anterior segment disorder characterized by abnormal proliferation and migration of corneal endothelial cells, leading to progressive angle closure, iris abnormalities, secondary glaucoma, and corneal decompensation. Historically divided into Chandler syndrome, progressive iris atrophy, and Cogan-Reese syndrome, ICE is now recognized as a disease spectrum with a shared pathophysiologic basis. Diagnosis and management remain challenging because of variable clinical manifestations and progressive vision-threatening complications. We provi

Immune-mediated sensorineural hearing loss may complicate systemic autoimmune diseases. We have previously reported the presence of antibodies directed against inner ear antigens in patients with Cogan syndrome, a disease characterized by sudden hearing loss and interstitial keratitis. Such autoantibodies cross-react with an epitope of SSA/Ro60 protein. Anti-Ro/SSA antibodies in pregnant women cross the placenta and reach the fetal tissues inducing an immune-mediated damage of the cardiac conduction system. We wanted to evaluate whether mothers with anti-Ro/SSA antibodies who gave birth to chi
