Précis of neuroconstructivism: how the brain constructs cognition.

Neuroconstructivism: How the Brain Constructs Cognition proposes a unifying framework for the study of cognitive development that brings together (1) constructivism (which views development as the progressive elaboration of increasingly complex structures), (2) cognitive neuroscience (which aims to understand the neural mechanisms underlying behavior), and (3) computational modeling (which proposes formal and explicit specifications of information processing). The guiding principle of our approach is context dependence, within and (in contrast to Marr [1982]) between levels of organization. We

Oxytocin increases retention of social cognition in autism.

BACKGROUND: Oxytocin dysfunction might contribute to the development of social deficits in autism, a core symptom domain and potential target for intervention. This study explored the effect of intravenous oxytocin administration on the retention of social information in autism. METHODS: Oxytocin and placebo challenges were administered to 15 adult subjects diagnosed with autism or Asperger's disorder, and comprehension of affective speech (happy, indifferent, angry, and sad) in neutral content sentences was tested. RESULTS: All subjects showed improvements in affective speech comprehension

Expanding stress theory: prolonged activation and perseverative cognition.

Several theories of the stress-disease link have now incorporated prolonged activation. This article argues that these theories still lack an important element, that is, the cognitive nature of the mechanism that causes stress responses to be sustained. The perception of stress and the initial response to it do not automatically lead to prolonged activation. The active cognitive representations of stressors need to be prolonged in order to extend their physiological concomitants. We call this mediating process perseverative cognition, and it is manifested in phenomena such as worry, rumination

Effect of sleep apnea on cognition and mood.

Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) is a common disorder in adults and children, which is characterized by repetitive transient reversible upper airway obstructions during sleep. Due to disrupted sleep architecture and intermittent hypoxemia, OSAS leads to impaired daytime functioning in various neuropsychological and affective domains. The most common abnormalities are executive dysfunction, impaired vigilance, depression, and possibly anxiety and, in children, hyperactivity. Optimal treatment of OSAS with continuous positive airway pressure may reverse the cognitive and affective dysfunc

Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) supplementation for cognition and well-being.

BACKGROUND: In view of the theoretical rationale for beneficial effects of DHEA and DHEAS on cognitive function in ageing and dementia, we have undertaken a thorough investigation of well-conducted studies in this area. This will provide a basis for confirmation of any effect of DHEA/S administration in humans in properly controlled trials. The review will also provide a scientific basis for effective dosage, acceptable route and duration of administration, and side effect profiles. This review is especially pertinent at this time as DHEA is currently being sold in large quantities in health f

Cognition-behaviour links in the persistence of panic.

The cognitive theory of panic disorder proposes that panic attacks occur as a result of an enduring tendency to misinterpret bodily sensations as a sign of imminent catastrophe such as a heart attack. The persistence of such catastrophic cognitions is in part due to the tendency of patients to avoid and/or escape situations where panic occurs. It is proposed that within-situation safety seeking behaviours also have the effect of maintaining catastrophic cognitions in the face of repeated panics during which the feared catastrophe does not occur. The association between catastrophic cognitions

Cerebral white matter and cognition in hydrocephalic children.

Although children with hydrocephalus frequently show poor development of nonverbal cognitive skills relative to verbal skills, little is known about the neuropathologic correlates of these discrepancies. In this study, cerebral white-matter structures and lateral ventricles were measured from the magnetic resonance images of age-matched children with meningomyelocele, meningocele, and aqueductal stenosis and normal subjects. The volume of each lateral ventricle and the cross-sectional area of the corpus callosum and internal capsules were correlated with concurrent measures of verbal and nonve

Group screening for cognition disorders in elderly persons.

Prevalence rates of cognitive impairment in persons aged 75 to 85 years are in the range of 10 to 19 percent, and 20 to 47 percent after the age of 85 years. Screening for dementia in persons aged 75 years and older would therefore identify a significant number of impaired persons. When screening for dementia, group testing would be more cost-effective than individual testing. We modified the Folstein Mini-Mental State examination (MMSE) for screening in a group setting. Community volunteers were tested at a geriatric health fair and at a special exercise class for the elderly. Subjects were s

Functional Mobility and Its Relationship With Cognition in Older Adults With Normal Cognition, Motoric Cognitive Risk Syndrome, and Mild Alzheimer's Disease.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Motoric cognitive risk syndrome (MCR) is a predementia syndrome and is a strong predictor of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Functional mobility, such as balance, sit-stand transitions, and turning, has not been clearly investigated in this population. This study aimed to compare functional mobility among older adults with normal cognition (NC), MCR, and mild AD. Cognitive-motor interactions were also investigated in all the groups. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 91 older adults, including 36 with NC, 32 with MCR, and 23 with mild AD. A battery of neuropsycholo

Cognition, oversight, and the safety case for documentation AI.

Large language models (LLMs) can now draft hospital discharge summaries. Reported hallucination rates vary by measurement context, from about 1%-2% in structured summarisation to over 60% under provocation testing. The common argument that LLMs outperform a tired resident treats a high-stakes clinical and legal document as a text-quality problem. We argue that a potentially underappreciated concern is the weakening of clinician oversight when reviewing fluent machine-generated text, and that the joint clinician-AI system is central to safety. We propose a Clinician-AI Oversight Model with four

Walnuts Modulate Cognition, Inflammation, and BDNF Expression in Rats.

Aging is associated with increased neuroinflammation and a decrease in neuroplasticity, contributing to cognitive decline and increased risk for neurodegenerative disease. Nutritional interventions, such as walnut supplementation, may counteract these effects due to walnuts' high content of polyunsaturated fatty acids, polyphenols, and other bioactive compounds. Prior studies suggest walnuts improve cognitive function and modulate neuroplasticity-, inflammatory-, and oxidative stress-associated pathways in both animal models and humans. We investigated the effects of 8 weeks of dietary walnut

Cognition, Diagnosis, and Treatment of Alzheimer's Disease: A Review.

As the global population ages, the health of older adults has become a growing concern. Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a common ailment affecting older adults, but the diagnosis and treatment of AD are difficult given our insufficient understanding of the disease. This review article and patents aim to provide reliable information for patients and their families by presenting a detailed overview of the pathogenic factors, diagnostic methods, and clinical manifestation of AD, as well as advances in drug and physical therapies. The information presented here should help provide a more comprehensive

APOE4 and cognition in intracranial atherosclerosis: beyond Alzheimer's pathology.

INTRODUCTION: The apolipoprotein E ε4 (APOE ε4) allele is a major genetic risk factor for Alzheimer's disease, but its relevance to cognition in intracranial atherosclerosis (ICAS) remains unclear. We investigated the association between APOE ε4 and cognition in ICAS. METHODS: Baseline data from a multicenter cohort were analyzed. Patients with radiologically confirmed ICAS underwent APOE genotyping, plasma biomarker assays, magnetic resonance imaging assessment of cerebral small vessel disease (CSVD) and brain atrophy, and standardized cognitive testing. RESULTS: Among 409 patients (mean ag

EVApeCognition: An 18-Year Dataset of Great Ape Cognition.

The study of great ape cognition offers insights into the evolutionary origins of human intelligence, but is hindered by small sample sizes and restricted access to data. To address this, we present the EVApeCognition Dataset, a publicly available resource comprising 262 experimental datasets from 150 scientific publications from the Wolfgang Köhler Primate Research Center (2004-2021) in Leipzig, Germany. Eighty-one apes participated in 150 studies, with a majority (N = 78) participating in more than one study. Publication of the dataset aims to make these unique datasets accessible for future

Mechanistic computational models of cognition across scales and species.

How can theory and mathematical modeling help accelerate research in psychiatry? Here we highlight the promise of computational approaches via three recent trends: multi-scale models of working memory which link receptors and cell-types to brain-wide activity and behavior; the extension of mechanistic computational models from working memory to other cognitive functions including conscious perception, attention and planning; and cross-species comparative models of cognition that give rise to translational computational neuroscience. These developments demonstrate the feasibility of achieving u

The therapeutic potential of COMT inhibition: cognition and beyond.

The catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT) enzyme regulates dopamine signaling in the prefrontal cortex (PFC). Given the role of PFC dopamine in the regulation of different aspects of executive function, COMT has emerged as a potential modulator of such behaviours. Here, we review the evidence linking COMT with executive function, with a particular focus on human studies using the brain penetrant COMT inhibitor tolcapone. Although small in scale, multiple studies demonstrate improvements in working memory after COMT inhibition in a manner dependent on baseline PFC dopamine signaling, consistent w
