PI3K/AKT pathway modulation and cold acclimation alleviation concerning apoptosis and necroptosis in broiler thymus.

Moderate cold stimulation regulates the thymus's growth and function and facilitates cold acclimatization in broilers. However, the underlying mechanism remains unknown. To explore the possible mechanism of the thymus in cold-acclimated broilers against cold stress, 240 one-day-old Arbor Acres (AA) broilers were assigned to 2 groups randomly. The control group (C) was housed at conventional temperatures. The temperature during the first week was 33°C to 34°C. Between the ages of 8 and 32 d, the temperature was lowered by 1°C every 2 d, i.e., gradually from 32°C to 20°C, and then maintained at

Functional study of RNA alternative splicing in zebrafish adaptation to low temperature.

Alternative splicing (AS) is crucial for gene expression regulation during cold adaptation, yet its role in fish remains unclear. This study revealed tissue-specific AS patterns in zebrafish, with the gill exhibiting the highest AS frequency, followed by the skin, ovary and brain. Cold exposure significantly altered splicing sites across tissues, with exon skipping (SE) being the predominant AS form. Alternative splicing genes (ASGs) displayed strong tissue specificity, and splicing variability correlated with temperature, suggesting AS acts as a temperature-sensitive regulatory mechanism. Spl

An impressive capacity for cold tolerance plasticity protects against ionoregulatory collapse in the disease vector Aedes aegypti.

The mosquito Aedes aegypti is largely confined to tropical and subtropical regions, but its range has recently been spreading to colder climates. As insect biogeography is tied to environmental temperature, understanding the limits of A. aegypti thermal tolerance and their capacity for phenotypic plasticity is important in predicting the spread of this species. In this study, we report on the chill coma onset (CCO) and recovery time (CCRT), as well as low-temperature survival phenotypes of larvae and adults of A. aegypti that developed or were acclimated to 15°C (cold) or 25°C (warm). Cold acc

Patients' experiences of cold exposure during ambulance care.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to cold temperatures is often a neglected problem in prehospital care. Cold exposure increase thermal discomfort and, if untreated causes disturbances of vital body functions until ultimately reaching hypothermia. It may also impair cognitive function, increase pain and contribute to fear and an overall sense of dissatisfaction. The aim of this study was to investigate injured and ill patients' experiences of cold exposure and to identify related factors. METHOD: During January to March 2011, 62 consecutively selected patients were observed when they were cared for by amb

Changes in epicardial and core temperatures during resuscitation of hemorrhagic shock.

The hypothermic effect of resuscitation solution temperature on epicardial and core temperatures in 15 dogs during hemorrhagic shock was studied. Hemorrhagic shock was induced and dogs were then resuscitated with either body-temperature lactated Ringer's, room-temperature lactated Ringer's, 4 degrees C blood, warmed blood, or cold blood mixed with 50 degrees C lactated Ringer's. There was a significant decrease (p = 0.001) from baseline temperature recordings with the use of room-temperature lactated Ringer's, cold blood, and cold blood mixed with 50 degrees C lactated Ringer's. Baseline tempe

Oxygen is toxic in the cold in C. elegans.

INTRODUCTION: Temperature and oxygen are two factors that profoundly affect survival limits of animals; too much or too little of either is lethal. However, humans and other animals can exhibit exceptional survival when oxygen and temperature are simultaneously low. This research investigates the role of oxygen in the cold shock death of Caenorhabditis elegans. METHODS: The survival of C. elegans populations in combinations of oxygen concentrations and was assayed. Additionally, the effect of cold acclimatization, mutations in the cold acclimatization pathway, compounds, and antioxidant prote

A three-dimensional model of transient bioheat transfer in the lower extremity during cryotherapy.

The purpose of this research was to create a computational model of the human thigh undergoing cryotherapy. The tissue temperatures were measured for five cold pack temperatures of -8°C, -4°C, 0°C, 4°C, and 8°C in addition to six different time intervals of cold application and ice removal. The depth of cold penetration and duration of local tissue cooling were investigated at 10 points during 30 min of application and 7 h of post-application. The model was created in CATIA, using a mid-axial cut of the human thigh MRI without pathology. After validation by the available clinical data, this re

A novel method for demonstrating cold agglutinin disease: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Cold agglutinin disease is a rare disorder characterized by an autoimmune hemolytic anemia occurring at low temperatures. Physical examination findings, often limited to acrocyanosis, are combined with a thermal amplitude test to help establish the diagnosis. Thermal amplitude testing determines the highest temperature at which the cold agglutination will occur and is an important parameter in diagnosing cold agglutinin disease. CASE PRESENTATION: Here we describe a 57-year-old white man of German and Nicaraguan descent with known chronic cold agglutinin disease who presented to o

Effect of Ambient Temperature Changes on Blood Flow in Anterior Cerebral Artery of Patients with Skull Prosthesis.

BACKGROUND: In many cases, an injury to the head leads to the replacement of a part of the skull with materials such as titanium and polyether ether ketone. METHODS: Three-dimensional heads model of 15 healthy individuals and 13 patients were prepared. The models were simulated using thermal fluid structure interaction analysis to evaluate the effects of cold (5°C) and hot (55°C) temperatures of the skull on the conditions of blood flow in the anterior cerebral artery. RESULTS: The results showed negligible changes (<3%) in wall shear stress (WSS) vessel and von Mises stress between the heal

Modification of therapeutic temperature range in cryotherapy could improve clinical efficacy in tension type headache.

BACKGROUND: Cold pack therapy is not used frequently in clinics in spite of its effectiveness in clinical reports. Low compliance due to cold intolerance may be a disturbance factor that hinders patients from using the modality. OBJECTIVE: To demonstrate the improved compliance and clinical efficacy as new devised cold modality with a different composition is applied to target different therapeutic temperature range in tension-type headache (TTH) patients. METHODS: A randomized, controlled, comparative trial involving 53 patients with tension-type headache was conducted. A new cold modality

Establishing A Mouse Model for Respiratory Tract Extreme Low-temperature Air Inhalation.

Currently, constructing a mouse model for cold environmental stimulation employs cold-heat plates and wearable cooling devices. These methods can partially fulfill the requirements for studying the responses and regulatory effects of mouse skin or neural circuits to cold stimulation. Numerous clinical studies have substantiated the correlation between exposure to low-temperature environments and the development of various diseases. Recently, there has been a growing emphasis on the continuous exchange of information between organs and tissues, providing a novel perspective on addressing longst

Low ambient temperature and sudden temperature drop increases the incidence of acute aortic dissection: a retrospective analysis from the northeast region of China.

BACKGROUND: Acute aortic dissection (AAD) is a cardiovascular catastrophe with substantial early mortality. Although ambient cold has been implicated as a trigger, existing evidence derives predominantly from temperate and subtropical settings. Populations enduring protracted severe winters-a hallmark of cold temperate zones-remain underrepresented, leaving the cardiovascular hazard of sustained extreme cold poorly defined. METHODS: In this retrospective time-stratified case-crossover study, we analyzed 1 384 patients with AAD admitted to a tertiary cardiovascular center in Harbin, China-a ci

Infrared thermography for examination of skin temperature in the dorsal hand of office workers.

Reduced blood flow may contribute to the pathophysiology of upper extremity musculoskeletal disorders (UEMSD), such as tendinitis and carpal tunnel syndrome. The study objective was to characterize potential differences in cutaneous temperature, among three groups of office workers assessed by dynamic thermography following a 9-min typing challenge: those with UEMSD, with ( n=6) or without ( n=10) cold hands exacerbated by keyboard use, and control subjects ( n=12). Temperature images of the metacarpal region of the dorsal hand were obtained 1 min before typing, and during three 2-min sample p

Coping with the cold: black-capped chickadees (Poecile atricapillus) use rapid facultative hypothermia to reduce fat loss overnight.

Heat loss due to a large surface-area-to-volume ratio makes surviving periods of cold temperatures a challenge for small endothermic animals. Many temperate, non-migratory birds survive cold winter nights by increasing heat production through shivering, maintaining their body temperature at the cost of the energy provided by fat stores. An additional strategy may be the use of facultative hypothermia, allowing body temperature to decrease overnight to conserve energy rather than maintaining normothermic body temperature. In this study, we examined the relationship between overnight body temper

Extreme winter temperature and birth defects: a population-based case-control study.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: We examined the relationship between extreme winter temperatures and birth defects to determine whether pregnant women might be vulnerable to the weather extremes expected with climate change. METHODS: In this population-based, case-control study, we linked the New York State Congenital Malformations Registry to birth certificates (1992-2006). Cases were defined as live births with birth defects, and controls were selected from a 10% random sample of live births. We assigned meteorological data based on maternal birth residence and summarized universal apparent temperatu

Transient receptor potential cation channel, subfamily C, member 5 (TRPC5) is a cold-transducer in the peripheral nervous system.

Detection and adaptation to cold temperature is crucial to survival. Cold sensing in the innocuous range of cold (>10-15 °C) in the mammalian peripheral nervous system is thought to rely primarily on transient receptor potential (TRP) ion channels, most notably the menthol receptor, TRPM8. Here we report that TRP cation channel, subfamily C member 5 (TRPC5), but not TRPC1/TRPC5 heteromeric channels, are highly cold sensitive in the temperature range 37-25 °C. We found that TRPC5 is present in mouse and human sensory neurons of dorsal root ganglia, a substantial number of peripheral nerves incl
