Microscopic colitis (MC) is recognized to be a common cause of chronic, non-bloody diarrhea with rising incidence in the last decade. The diagnosis can only be made by histology and the specific histological findings define two subtypes of MC: lymphocytic (LC) or collagenous colitis (CC). The key histological feature of LC is an increased number of surface intraepithelial lymphocytes (IEL). In the literature, >20 IELs/100 epithelial cells are required to warrant the diagnosis of LC. IELs are mostly cytotoxic CD8+ T-lymphocytes. The key histological criterion for CC is a continuous subepithelia

Collagenous gastritis (CG) is a rare gastrointestinal disorder characterized by subepithelial collagen deposition and lamina propria inflammation. Despite its first description over four decades ago, the pathogenesis remains unclear, with no standardized pathologic criteria/classification, treatment or established prognosis. A systematic PubMed search identified all English-language case reports, series and observational studies describing CG. Data on demographics, clinical presentation, endoscopic appearance and histologic features were extracted. Of the 133 patients with available demographi

Microscopic colitis (comprising lymphocytic and collagenous colitis, albeit an incomplete variant is gaining recognition as well) is a chronic, immune-mediated inflammatory state of the lower gastrointestinal tract (colon). The diagnosis requires diagnostic colonoscopy with characteristic histopathological findings. They have a propensity to present in senior populations (above 60 years of age), particularly women - who are approximately 2.5-3 times more likely to develop microscopic colitis. Preexisting other immune-inflammatory diseases are also shown to predispose patients for the developme

Budesonide is a synthetic steroid of the glucocorticoid family with a high topical anti-inflammatory activity. Enteric-coated formulations resist gastric-acid degradation, delivering active drug to the small intestine and proximal colon. Budesonide has a high first-pass metabolism with minimal systemic absorption. It is therefore felt to cause fewer side effects than traditional glucocorticosteroids and to be generally well tolerated. The aim of this paper is to examine the utility of this medication in frequently encountered gastrointestinal conditions: Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, mi

BACKGROUND/AIM: Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a gastrointestinal condition characterized by chronic abdominal pain, discomfort, bloating, and alteration of bowel habits in the absence of any organic cause. This trial investigated the presence of microscopic colitis (MC) and associated factors related to MC in patients diagnosed with IBS.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study group (group I) consisted of 91 consecutive patients diagnosed with IBS based on the Rome III Criteria for whom colonoscopic examination was requested. The control group (group II) had 41 patients diagnosed with IBS consid

BACKGROUND: Collagenous gastritis (CG) is a rare disease characterized by infiltration of the lamina propria with mononuclear cells and subepithelial deposition of collagen. Due to its nonspecific presentation, it is often misdiagnosed. The clinical characteristics, endoscopic, and histopathologic features, and treatment outcomes of CG have not been well defined.
AIMS: We aim to summarize the existing evidence of CG.
METHODS: According to the PRISMA Extension for Scoping Reviews, we performed a search on MEDLINE and EMBASE for articles with keywords including "collagenous gastritis" and "mic

OBJECTIVES: Patients with microscopic colitis may have subtle macroscopic findings on colonoscopy such as erythema, edema, or altered vascular pattern; however, radiographic abnormalities on cross-sectional imaging have not been investigated. We aimed at identifying the abdominopelvic radiographic abnormalities in patients with microscopic colitis, as well as possible correlation with endoscopic findings and the need for extended duration of treatment.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a retrospective study of patients with biopsy-proven microscopic colitis at two tertiary centers between 1 Jan

An increasing number of case reports and controlled trials have drawn attention to NSAID-induced side effects in the lower gastrointestinal tract. In this review we also report 9 cases of colonic ulcers and 7 cases of diaphragm disease of the ascending colon, most of them associated with the long-term intake of slow release diclofenac. NSAIDs not only can exacerbate preexisting conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease or diverticular disease, but may also induce de novo enteropathy, colitis, collagenous colitis ulcers and strictures. Complications such as bleeding, perforation or bowel ob

Collagenous gastritis (CG) is a rare disease diagnosed histologically by the subepithelial deposition of collagen bands thicker than 10 µm and the infiltration of inflammatory mononuclear cells in the lamina propria. The definite pathophysiology is yet to be elucidated. However, recent studies have suggested that the collagen deposition may be the result of a reparative process in response to an earlier inflammatory, autoimmune, infectious, or toxic insult. CG is divided into the pediatric- and adult-type. While the pediatric-type is limited to the stomach, the adult-type involves not only the

Previous studies from this laboratory showed that serum anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies, distinct from those associated with active Wegener's granulomatosis, are present in the majority of patients with ulcerative colitis. In this study, the specificity of anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies for ulcerative colitis as compared with other colitides and diarrheal illness was determined. In a blinded study, test samples of serum were screened for anti-neutrophil immunoglobulin G in a fixed neutrophil enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Levels of neutrophil binding by immunoglobulin G and

PURPOSE: Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) are frequently associated with adverse events, often affecting the gastrointestinal tract. We conducted this study to determine the characteristics and outcomes of cancer patients with pre-existing microscopic colitis (MC) who underwent ICI treatment.
METHODS: In this retrospective study, we identified 10 patients with pre-existing MC who received ICIs at our center 01/2010-06/2020. Clinical characteristics and disease outcomes were recorded.
RESULTS: Of 124 screened patients with MC before ICI exposure, 10 had sufficient data to be included in th

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Eosinophilic colitis is a rare condition, with a prevalence rate in the USA of 2-3/100 000 persons (0.003%), but diagnosed in 0.1% of biopsies in those colonoscoped for diarrhoea. Secondary colonic eosinophilia is more common and associated with systemic, colonic and infectious diseases. In this review, the latest advances in diagnosis, treatment and prognosis are summarized and discussed.
RECENT FINDINGS: What constitutes a 'normal' count of eosinophils is poorly documented but there are recent studies that establish normal colonic eosinophil ranges as well as distinguishi

The histopathologic features of acute radiation-induced colitis in humans have been described in occasional, >20-year-old studies, but they have not been analyzed in detail. We characterize such findings in 34 patients with rectal cancer who underwent surgery a few days after preoperative irradiation with 25 Gy given over 5-7 days, and we compare the results to the histopathologic features detected in 18 patients treated by a conventional preoperative irradiation protocol consisting of 45 Gy during 5 weeks followed by surgery after a time interval of at least 3 weeks. Short-term preoperative i

OBJECTIVE: To assess the presence of both genetic and serological markers of coeliac disease in patients with microscopic colitis, and whether there was associated enteropathy.
METHODS: HLA-DQ2, HLA-DQ8, serum immunoglobulin A-antiendomysial and immunoglobulin A-anti-tissue transglutaminase antibodies were investigated in 59 patients with microscopic colitis. Seventy healthy subjects acted as the control group. Endoscopic biopsies from the distal duodenum were obtained in DQ2-positive or DQ8-positive patients. Patients with histological changes compatible with gluten-sensitive enteropathy wer

The literature review gives the present-day views of the definition, etiology, pathogenesis, diagnosis, and treatment of microscopic colitis (MC). In the present view, MC is an inflammatory bowel disease of unknown etiology, which is characterized by chronic watery diarrhea, no macroscopic signs of large bowel involvement in the presence of specific pathomorphological changes. There are two major forms of MC, which are similar in its clinical picture, yet, heterogeneous in histological criteria: collagenous colitis (CC) and lymphocytic colitis (LC). As of now, the prevalence of MC is about 100

The clinical data of 4 pediatric patients with collagenous gastritis (CG) diagnosed at the Department of Pediatrics of Peking University Third Hospital between January 2021 and October 2025 were retrospectively analyzed. The median age at onset was 10.8 years. All patients presented with iron-deficiency anemia, and two also experienced abdominal pain. Gastroscopy in all cases revealed a nodular gastric mucosal appearance. Histopathological examination confirmed subepithelial collagen band thickness greater than 10 μm in all patients, with varied patterns of inflammatory infiltrate, including t

OBJECTIVE: Microscopic colitis is a common cause of chronic watery diarrhea among the elderly. Although the prevalence of celiac disease appears to be higher in patients with microscopic colitis, the relationship between dietary gluten intake and risk of microscopic colitis among individuals without celiac disease has not been explored.
METHODS: We conducted a prospective study of 160,744 US women without celiac disease enrolled in the Nurses' Health Study (NHS) and the NHSII. Dietary gluten intake was estimated using validated food frequency questionnaires every 4 years. Microscopic colitis
