Activation of the phenylpropanoid biosynthesis pathway reveals a novel action mechanism of the elicitor effect of chitosan on avocado fruit epicarp.

Secondary metabolites play an important role in the avocado fruit defense system. Phenolic compounds are the main biosynthesized metabolites of this system response. Our objective in this investigation was to evaluate the induction of specific metabolic pathways using chitosan as an elicitor. Extracts obtained from avocado in intermediate and consumption maturity stages treated with chitosan exhibited an increase in antifungal activity, which caused inhibition of mycelial growth and a decrease in sporulation as well as spore germination of Colletotrichum gloeosporioides. Additionally, RNA from

Antifungal and proteolytic activities of endophytic fungi isolated from Piper hispidum Sw.

Endophytes are being considered for use in biological control, and the enzymes they secrete might facilitate their initial colonization of internal plant tissues and direct interactions with microbial pathogens. Microbial proteases are also biotechnologically important products employed in bioremediation processes, cosmetics, and the pharmaceutical, photographic and food industries. In the present study, we evaluated antagonism and competitive interactions between 98 fungal endophytes and Alternaria alternata, Colletotrichum sp., Phyllosticta citricarpa and Moniliophthora perniciosa. The MdVQ37-MdWRKY100 complex regulates salicylic acid content and MdRPM1 expression to modulate resistance to Glomerella leaf spot in apples.

Glomerella leaf spot (GLS), caused by the fungus Colletotrichum fructicola, is considered one of the most destructive diseases affecting apples. The VQ-WRKY complex plays a crucial role in the response of plants to biotic stresses. However, our understanding of the defensive role of the VQ-WRKY complex on woody plants, particularly apples, under biotic stress, remains limited. In this study, we elucidated the molecular mechanisms underlying the defensive role of the apple MdVQ37-MdWRKY100 module in response to GLS infection. The overexpression of MdWRKY100 enhanced resistance to C. fructicola,

Can Temperature and UV Exposure Alter the Antimicrobial Properties of the Essential Oils? An Investigation of Origanum vulgare, Cymbopogon citratus, Syzygium aromaticum, and Lippia sidoides.

Essential oils (EOs) are natural compounds widely applied in agriculture, post-harvest preservation, food processing, and human health due to their strong antimicrobial potential. However, the effects of postextraction physical treatments on their chemical and biological properties remain underexplored. This study investigated the effects of 48 h of exposure to heat at 70 °C and UV radiation on EOs from oregano (OV), clove (SA), lemongrass (CC), and the Brazilian native pepper-rosmarin (LS). Chemical profiles were determined by GC-MS, while antimicrobial activities were assessed against Escher

Cross-resistance to the new fungicide mefentrifluconazole in DMI-resistant fungal pathogens.

In the European Union (EU), regulation of sterol demethylation inhibiting (DMI) fungicides is tightened due to their suspected endocrine disrupting properties. However, the new DMI fungicide mefentrifluconazole was reported to have high fungicidal activity with minimal adverse side effects. In addition, some evidence suggests inconsistent cross resistance between mefentrifluconazole and other azoles. In this study, mefentrifluconazole and other triazoles were examined for activity to select pathogens sensitive or resistant to DMIs using mycelial growth tests on fungicide-treated culture medium

The VQ motif-containing proteins in the diploid and octoploid strawberry.

The plant VQ motif-containing proteins are a recently discovered class of plant regulatory proteins interacting with WRKY transcription factors capable of modulate their activity as transcriptional regulators. The short VQ motif (FxxhVQxhTG) is the main element in the WRKY-VQ interaction, whereas a newly identified variable upstream amino acid motif appears to be determinant for the WRKY specificity. The VQ family has been studied in several species and seems to play important roles in a variety of biological processes, including response to biotic and abiotic stresses. Here, we present a syst

Aspergillus fumigatus arp1 modulates conidial pigmentation and complement deposition.

Aspergillus fumigatus is an important pathogen causing invasive pulmonary aspergillosis in immunocompromised patients. The fungus propagates by conidia, which are the infectious structures inhaled by the human host. Opsonophagocytosis is thought to contribute to clearance of the inhaled conidia, a process that is facilitated by complement deposition on conidial surfaces. We now show that conidial colour mutants exhibit significant increases in C3 binding capacity compared with wild type. A reddish-pink mutation that led to enhanced C3 binding was complemented by a cosmid clone. A 3.3 kb DNA fr

Broad spectrum activities of essential oils in the lab fail to translate to blueberry disease control for organic producers in the field.

Blueberry production in the southeastern U.S. is challenged by various fungal diseases, especially in organic systems. Essential oils (EOs), derived from plants, offer a potential sustainable alternative to synthetic fungicides. In this study, we evaluated the in vitro and in vivo efficacy of several EOs against key blueberry fungal pathogens including Colletotrichum, Corynespora, Lasiodiplodia, and Neofusicoccum isolates. While tea tree oil showed very limited antifungal activity; thyme, oregano, savory, and cinnamon oils demonstrated varying, but promising antifungal activity against all fun

Cloning and functional analysis of three genes encoding polygalacturonase-inhibiting proteins from Capsicum annuum and transgenic CaPGIP1 in tobacco in relation to increased resistance to two fungal pathogens.

Polygalacturonase-inhibiting proteins (PGIPs) are plant cell wall glycoproteins that can inhibit fungal endopolygalacturonases (PGs). The PGIPs directly reduce the aggressive potential of PGs. Here, we isolated and functionally characterized three members of the pepper (Capsicum annuum) PGIP gene family. Each was up-regulated at a different time following stimulation of the pepper leaves by Phytophthora capcisi and abiotic stresses including salicylic acid, methyl jasmonate, abscisic acid, wounding and cold treatment. Purified recombinant proteins individually inhibited activity of PGs produce

SbWRKY62 Coordinates With SbERF096 to Activate Pterostilbene Biosynthesis and Targets a Xylanase Inhibitor Protein for Anthracnose Resistance in Sorghum.

Sorghum anthracnose caused by Colletotrichum sublineola (C. sublineola) is a destructive disease leading to severe crop damages. Pterostilbene is a phytoalexin that contributes to defence responses in sorghum, but the transcriptional regulation of its biosynthesis remained poorly understood. Here, we characterised two transcription factors, SbERF096 and SbWRKY62, that are induced upon C. sublineola infection, with significantly higher expression levels in the resistant cultivar SC748-5 than the susceptible cultivar BTx623. SbERF096 directly activates SbSTS1, which encodes stilbene synthase, vi
