Assessing Public Interest in Mammography, Computed Tomography Lung Cancer Screening, and Computed Tomography Colonography Screening Examinations Using Internet Search Data: Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: The noninvasive imaging examinations of mammography (MG), low-dose computed tomography (CT) for lung cancer screening (LCS), and CT colonography (CTC) play important roles in screening for the most common cancer types. Internet search data can be used to gauge public interest in screening techniques, assess common screening-related questions and concerns, and formulate public awareness strategies. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to compare historical Google search volumes for MG, LCS, and CTC and to determine the most common search topics. METHODS: Google Trends data were used to quan

A Case of Colon Cancer Associated with Ulcerative Colitis: Evaluation Using CT Colonography.

A 29-year-old female with ulcerative colitis was found to have advanced sigmoid colon cancer on colonoscopy. Computed tomography (CT) was performed after colonoscopy for the evaluation of metastasis. CT colonography (CTC) could be understood adding carbon dioxide because of soon after colonoscopic examination. Images of CTC were evaluated by two- and three-dimensional images including virtual endoscopic, virtual colon dissection and air images, and then compared with conventional endoscopic images. Virtual endoscopic images of flat elevated cancer with shallow ulcer were similar to those findi

Deformable registration of prone and supine colons for CT colonography.

CT colonography (CTC) is a non-invasive technique for detecting colorectal polyps and colon cancer. Through the addition of the prone scanning with the original supine scanning, the possibility of detecting the polyps is increased. The registration process for this application requires the comparison between the prone and supine colons for diagnosis. A level-set representation of the object boundary using a distance map is presented in this paper as an input to demons registration algorithm for supine and prone CT colonography image data. After first aligning the colon volumes based on the pat

CT colonography predictably overestimates colonic length and distance to polyps compared with optical colonoscopy.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to determine the discrepancy between CT colonography (CTC) and optical colonoscopy (OC) measurements for both anus-to-cecum length and anus-to-polyps distance and then determine whether a conversion factor could be generated to equate these CTC and OC distances. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed CTC and OC reports from patients who had undergone both procedures as part of an established protocol. The anus-to-cecum measurement recorded on a single proprietary CTC workstation was compared with the OC cecal length for each patient. Likewi

[Place of bidirectional endoscopy in the assessment of iron deficiency in the elderly].

Iron deficiency is a common pathology in elderly patients. It is most often due to digestive lesions, so we wonder the benefit-risk balance and yield of digestive explorations. The English recommendations recommend that bidirectional endoscopy (esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) and colonoscopy) is performed at the same time, without any upper age limit. In studies conducted in people over 75 years of age, the yield of diagnostic varies between 63 and 68%, which is similar to that of younger people. There is about 40% of the upper lesion and 40% of the lower lesion. The simultaneous discovery of

Assessment of patient organ dose in CT virtual colonoscopy for bowel cancer screening.

Justification and optimisation form the basic elements for the radiological protection of individuals for medical exposures. Justification includes the assessment of patient organ doses from which radiation risks are deduced. Medical radiation exposures are justified only in the case of a sufficient net benefit. For screening examinations, such as CT virtual colonoscopy, this implies that patient organ doses should be relatively low to minimise the radiation detriment. Image quality should be sufficient to maximise the potential diagnostic benefits. The Medical Exposures Directive places speci

Virtual Colonoscopy: Retrospective Comparison of the Findings in Supine and Prone Positions.

BackgroundEarly detection of colorectal cancer (CRC) is significantly associated with reduced morbidity and mortality. Virtual colonoscopy (VC) is a minimally invasive, safe and well-tolerated alternative procedure to traditional colonoscopy. Therefore, we aimed to evaluate the findings of VC particularly in supine and prone positions as well as to contribute to the practical challenges of procedure.MethodsTotal number of 20 patients who underwent VC were included in this retrospective study. After proper bowel cleansing was achieved, intestinal dilatation was performed by injecting air into t

CT colonography evaluation of the relationship between colon anatomy and diverticula.

OBJECTIVES: In this study, we aimed at investigating the relationship between diverticula and in vivo colonic features such as total colon length (TCL), using CTC. We also evaluated polyps, neoplastic lesions and the correlation among them. METHODS: This retrospective study considered a series of patients who underwent CTC in our Hospital from 2010 to 2018. We evaluated TCL, the length of each colon segments and sigmoid colon diameter using dedicated software. We verified the presence of diverticula, polyps and neoplasm and measured the number of diverticula using a five-point class scale, ev

Evaluation of an early-stage innovation for full-thickness excision of benign colonic polyps using the IDEAL framework.

AIMS: Colectomy is the current approach for patients with endoscopically unresectable benign polyps but risks considerable morbidity. Full-thickness laparoendoscopic excision (FLEX) is a novel procedure, specifically developed to treat endoscopically unresectable benign colonic polyps, which could reduce the treatment burden of the current approach and improve outcomes. However, traditional evaluations of surgical innovations lack methodological rigour. This study reports the development and feasibility of the FLEX procedure in selected patients. METHOD: A prospective development study using

Patients with polyps larger than 5 mm in computed tomography colonoscopy screening have high risk for advanced colonic neoplasia in Asia.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Computed tomography colonography (CTC) is a recommended screening modality for colorectal cancer (CRC). It is not known whether polyps 6-9 mm based on CRC are likely to have advanced histologic features in Asian patients. We estimated the risk of advanced colonic neoplasia (ACN) from polyps <10 mm and the risk of ACN detection failure if patients with polyps <10 mm are not referred for colonoscopy. METHODS: The study included 1457 subjects from the Asia-Pacific Working Group on CRC screening and the Hong Kong CRC screening program. Polyps and ACN found during colonoscopy ex

Screening and surveillance for the early detection of colorectal cancer and adenomatous polyps, 2008: a joint guideline from the American Cancer Society, the US Multi-Society Task Force on Colorectal Cancer, and the American College of Radiology.

In the United States, colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third most common cancer diagnosed among men and women and the second leading cause of death from cancer. CRC largely can be prevented by the detection and removal of adenomatous polyps, and survival is significantly better when CRC is diagnosed while still localized. In 2006 to 2007, the American Cancer Society, the US Multi Society Task Force on Colorectal Cancer, and the American College of Radiology came together to develop consensus guidelines for the detection of adenomatous polyps and CRC in asymptomatic average-risk adults. In this u

Evaluation of patient dose for barium enemas and CT colonography in Japan.

The objective of this study was to assess patient doses for examinations of the lower digestive tract (barium enemas and CT colonography) in Japan. These doses were evaluated from in-phantom dose measurements using a dosemeter-implanted anthropomorphic phantom and from the knowledge of procedures of these examinations. For barium enemas, the doses, which were the sums of doses for various projections in the procedure, were separately derived for fluoroscopy and for analogue and digital radiography. For CT colonography, the doses were evaluated for the prone and the supine positions, each inclu

[Transverse Colectomy with D2 Lymph Node Dissection with a Small Incision Using Body Surface 3D-Simulation CT Colonography].

BACKGROUND: Laparoscopic transverse colectomy is technically difficult. In mini-laparotomy surgery, colectomy for midtransverse colon cancer can easily be performed, but exact D2 lymph node dissection is very difficult for a variety of vessels in the transverse colon. Using 3D-CT imaging, we present a case of D2 lymph node dissection where mini-laparotomy transverse colectomy was performedby a small incision similar to that usedin laparoscopic surgery. METHOD: The patient was a 60-yearoldwoman with early transverse colon cancer, which was locatedin the mid-transverse colon. Surgical treatment

Preoperative segmental localization of colorectal carcinoma: CT colonography vs. optical colonoscopy.

BACKGROUND: Adequate preoperative segmental localization of colorectal cancer is important to indicate the right surgical treatment. Preoperative localization has become more important in the era of minimally invasive surgery. The aim of this study was to compare optical colonoscopy (OC) and CT colonography (CTC) with respect to the error rates in the segmental localization of colorectal carcinoma. METHODS: A total of 420 patients with histopathologically proven colorectal carcinoma underwent CTC between December 2006 and February 2017. 284 Of these patients underwent surgical resection and h

What is the clinicopathological characteristic of cloacogenic carcinoma outside the anorectal zone?

This study aimed to examine English-language publications on cloacogenic carcinoma which has developed outside the anorectal zone. Studies published in English literature on cloacogenic carcinoma developing in the colorectal area were accessed via Pubmed and Google scholar databases. Within these articles, studies in which there were developments in the other segments of the colon outside the anorectal zone were examined. We retrieved seven studies matching our selection criteria from the research. The studies were published between 1977 and 2009. Four of the patients were female and three wer
