PURPOSE: Red desaturation is a subjective, sensitive test for patients with optic nerve disease. There is no quantitative clinical test to measure the severity of color desaturation. A new method of color division of the visual fields based on polarized light interference is described. A new method for diploptic therapy of strabismus is developed, based on the above principle and possessing numerous advantages. The method was used in 38 patients with binocular disorders of various severity; binocular function improved in 18. The method is particularly effective in the patients with correct position of the eyes with bifoveal fusion on the synaptophore and parallel color test vision and in the patients with binocular vision and amblyobinopia.

PURPOSE: Previous studies indicated that advanced age-related macular degeneration (AMD) affects contrast sensitivity (CS) in humans. The CS results for early/intermediate AMD patients are contradictory. The visual evoked potentials (VEPs) and neuro-ophthalmological examinations of 134 patients were compared. The VEPs were abnormal in 95% of the eyes with optic neuritis. This cross-sectional study assessed the relationship between the degree of optic nerve pallor (optic atrophy) and visual function. Using a set of "gold standard" stereoscopic slides, the severity of optic atrophy for 270 eyes, each having sustained a bout of optic neuropathy, was graded. We hypothesized that the parts of scenes identified by human observers as "objects" show distinct color properties from backgrounds, and that the brain uses this information towards object recognition. Eight patients (16 eyes) developed ocular toxicity while undergoing intravenous deferoxamine mesylate (Desferal) chelation therapy for transfusional hemosiderosis.
