The Australian Vietnam Veterans Health Study: III. psychological health of Australian Vietnam veterans and its relationship to combat.

BACKGROUND: Self-reported psychiatric status of Australian Vietnam war veterans was determined 20-25 years after the war and its relation to combat was investigated. METHOD: A simple random sample of Australian Army Vietnam veterans was interviewed nationally using standardized interviews and self-completion tests to assess the prevalence of lifetime and current psychiatric illness and its relationship to combat. Army records were used to extract data on the cohort for use in regression-based adjustment for non-response. RESULTS: The conditions mainly affecting the Australian veterans were a

Psychiatric Disorders among the Military in West Africa: A Systematic Narrative Review.

(1) Background: Military combat impacts the mental health of veterans and active military personnel. Although various studies, the majority of which are from Westernized countries, have provided insight into how combat causes psychiatric disorders, such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, and anxiety among veterans, there appears to be scant published literature on psychiatric disorders among military personnel in the West African region. It is important to contextually understand the psychiatric disorders among military personnel in this region who may be faced with similar

Childhood trauma and posttraumatic stress disorder in substance abuse inpatients.

This pilot study examined: the prevalence of childhood trauma in a sample of male veteran substance abuse inpatients, and the relationship of childhood trauma to substance abuse in this sample, controlling for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Forty-six subjects were interviewed using the Traumatic Antecedents Questionnaire, Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-III-R (SCID)-P Psychoactive Substance Use Disorders module, the Addiction Severity Index, and the SCID-NP-V PTSD module. Seventy-seven percent of subjects had been exposed to severe childhood trauma. Fifty-eight percent had lifetim

From trauma to transformation: How potentially traumatic military experiences, PTSD symptoms, and psychological strengths shape posttraumatic growth in Israeli female veterans.

OBJECTIVE: While increasing attention has been paid to the negative ramifications of military service on female veterans, little is known about the factors that support positive adaptation and posttraumatic growth (PTG) in this population. This study examined how military-related risk factors (combat exposure, sexist hostility), outcomes (posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms), and psychological strengths (self-efficacy, self-esteem, psychological flexibility, prosocial intentions, gratitude, hope, and meaning-centered coping) contribute to PTG among Israeli female combat and noncombat vetera

Drinking to Cope with Posttraumatic Stress: A Nationally Representative Study of Men with and without Military Combat Experience.

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and hazardous alcohol use are prevalent among trauma survivors. Despite higher rates of both PTSD and hazardous alcohol use among military combat veterans than civilians, scant research has examined whether military combat experience is associated with drinking alcohol to cope with PTSD symptoms. This study tested the hypothesis that compared to trauma-exposed men without combat experience, men with military combat experience would be more likely to endorse drinking alcohol to cope with their PTSD symptoms. Methods: Interview data from N = 11,474 men who re

Action-guilt, survivor-guilt, and depression in combat-related PTSD.

Identifying the role of guilt in post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) has important implications for understanding the development and treatment of PTSD. The present study is a secondary analysis of data collected on veterans with combat-related PTSD (N = 61) who enrolled in a clinical trial. Hierarchical regression analyses were used to explore associations between action- and survivor-guilt on the Clinician Administered PTSD Scale (CAPS), PTSD symptom severity on the CAPS, and depression on the Quick Inventory of Depressive Symptomatology (QIDS). Action- and survivor-guilt independently pre

[Features of the psychophysiological response of combatants with combat stress reactions].

OBJECTIVE: To determine the features of the psychophysiological response in servicemen with the consequences of combat stress reactions (CSR) within the research paradigm of «predictable-unpredictable threat» (PUT). MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study included 87 male servicemen. Group 1 included healthy military personnel (control group [CG], n=40), Group 2 consisted of combatants with stress-associated non-psychotic disorders (CSR group, n=47): F43.1 (38.3%), F41.2 (29.6%), F44 (19.5%), F41.1 (12.6%). The mean age of the subjects in the CG group was 23.7±2.3 years vs. 23.2±2.3 years in the CSR

Reduced pre-attentive threat versus nonthreat signal discrimination in clinically healthy military personnel with recurrent combat exposure history: A preliminary event-related potential (ERP) study.

Evidence now suggests that traumatic-stress impacts brain functions even in the absence of acute-onset post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms. These neurophysiological changes have also been suggested to account for increased risks of PTSD symptoms later developing in the aftermath of subsequent trauma. However, surprisingly few studies have explicitly examined brain function dynamics in high-risk populations, such as combat exposed military personnel without diagnosable PTSD. To extend available research, facial expression sensitive N170 event-related potential (ERP) amplitudes were e

The Associations Between Physical and Psychological Symptoms and Traumatic Military Deployment Exposures.

Current paradigms regarding the effects of traumatic exposures on military personnel do not consider physical symptoms unrelated to injury or illness as independent outcomes of trauma exposure, characteristically dealing with these symptoms as comorbidities of psychological disorders. Our objective was to ascertain the proportions of deployed military personnel who experienced predominantly physical symptoms, predominantly psychological symptoms, and comorbidity of the two and to examine the association between traumatic deployment exposures (TDEs) and these symptomatic profiles. Data were tak

Cardiovascular manifestations of posttraumatic stress disorder.

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) involves the onset of psychiatric symptoms after exposure to a traumatic event. PTSD has an estimated lifetime prevalence of 7.8% among adult Americans, and about 15.2% of the men and 8.5% of the women who served in Vietnam suffered from posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) > or =15 years after their military service. Physiological responses (increase in heart rate, blood pressure, tremor and other symptoms of autonomic arousal) to reminders of the trauma are a part of the DSM-IV definition of PTSD. Multiple studies have shown that patients suffering from P

Automatism and post-traumatic stress disorder.

A soldier with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) who committed a criminal act during a dissociative episode is described. This report and other published cases indicate that criminal acts can occur during dissociative episodes among people who suffer from PTSD. However, the evidence suggests that such incidents are rare and may be overemphasised. There often seems to be little relationship between the crimes committed by war veterans and their war experiences.

Posttraumatic stress disorder and impaired autonomic modulation in male twins.

BACKGROUND: Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) has been linked to increased morbidity. An inflexibility of the autonomic nervous system might be the underlying mechanism. We aimed to assess whether PTSD and combat trauma exposure are associated with lower heart rate variability (HRV), a measure of autonomic function and a predictor of death. METHODS: We measured HRV by power spectral analysis on 24-hour ambulatory electrocardiogram in 459 middle-aged veteran male twins. Combat trauma was assessed with the combat exposure scale, and current and remitted PTSD was assessed with the Structured

Examining the role of combat loss among Vietnam War Veterans.

Military combat often presents service members with a dual burden of coping with traumas of various types while also grappling with the deaths of close personal friends. At present, much less is known about the effects of bereavement in the context of war compared to other combat-related stressors. Studying a sample of combat veterans from the National Vietnam Veterans Readjustment Study (NVVRS), we examined the contribution of combat loss in psychological functioning and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). When controlling for gender, age, ethnicity, educational background, exposure to nonb

Body Mass Index and Risk of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder: A Cohort Study of 1.4 Million Late Adolescents.

INTRODUCTION: To assess whether abnormal body mass index (BMI) among Israeli Defense Force (IDF) recruits is associated with increased risk for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included 1,430,118 Israeli late adolescents aged 16-20 who were physically and mentally evaluated before IDF enlistment from January 1, 1998, to December 31, 2019. Body mass index was measured before enlistment, and PTSD diagnoses were based on the DSM-5 criteria as recorded by the IDF or the Ministry of Defense for combat-related PTSD. Individuals with PTSD

Comparison of Musculoskeletal Injury and Behavioral Health Diagnoses Among U.S. Army Active Duty Servicewomen in Ground Combat and Non-Ground Combat Military Occupational Specialties.

INTRODUCTION: The U.S. Army's Soldier 2020 program, which started in January 2016, was designed to achieve full integration of women in all military occupational specialties. This study was undertaken to determine differences in risk of musculoskeletal injury and behavioral health (BH) disorders among U.S. Army Active Duty Servicewomen (ADSW) in ground combat military occupational specialties (MOS) versus those in non-ground combat MOS since the start of the program until January 2019. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Using healthcare claims data from the Military Health System's Data Repository we con

[The importance of a transcultural clinical approach in the context of traumatic migration].

The transcultural dimension must necessarily be taken into account in the diagnosis of psychiatric disorders, as shown by the case of a young immigrant woman whose request for clinical care is motivated by an anxiety-depressive state that she explains by difficulties in adapting to a poorly mastered cultural disparity. This situation reveals that her difficulties are the expression of acculturation and post-traumatic stress inherent in war trauma.

Long-term Mental Health Trajectories of Injured Military Servicemembers: Comparing Combat to Noncombat Related Injuries.

OBJECTIVE: We sought to quantify the impact of injury characteristics and setting on the development of mental health conditions, comparing combat to noncombat injury mechanisms. BACKGROUND: Due to advances in combat casualty care, military service-members are surviving traumatic injuries at substantial rates. The nature and setting of traumatic injury may influence the development of subsequent mental health disorders more than clinical injury characteristics. METHODS: TRICARE claims data was used to identify servicemembers injured in combat between 2007 and 2011. Controls were servicemembe

The mental health of UK ex-servicemen with a combat-related or a non-combat-related visual impairment: does the cause of visual impairment matter?

AIMS: Since the start of the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan, the numbers of young service personnel who have sustained a combat-related visual impairment have increased. This cross-sectional study examined the mental well-being of ex-servicemen (aged 22-55 years) with a visual impairment and determined if the mental health of those with a combat-related visual impairment differed from those whose visual impairment is not combat-related. METHODS: Male ex-service personnel with a visual impairment completed a telephone interview assessing the presence of depressive symptomatology, probable a
