One of the 12 Grand Challenges facing contemporary social work is to close the health gap experienced by those in historically marginalized communities (Uehara et al., 2013). As social workers, we seek to understand the individual, interpersonal, social, and environmental factors along with the structural inequities leading to initiation and continuation of substance misuse. We are constantly contextualizing the circumstances under which substance misuse occurs, as well as contextualizing our approaches to addressing this issue from both a public health and social justice perspective. In order

The intestinal microvasculature (iMV) plays multiple pathogenic roles during chronic inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). The iMV acts as a second line of defense and is, among other factors, crucial for the innate immunity in the gut. It is also the therapeutic location in IBD targeting aggravated leukocyte adhesion processes involving ICAM-1 and E-selectin. Specific targeting is stressed via nanoparticulate drug vehicles. Evaluating the iMV in enterocyte barrier models in vitro could shed light on inflammation and barrier-integrity processes during IBD. Therefore, we generated a barrier model b

BACKGROUND:: Persons with disabilities who reside in rural areas experience challenges accessing and utilising health services and rehabilitation. Due to the high prevalence of diabetes mellitus in rural regions, the risk of having a lower-limb amputation is increasing. Comprehensive rehabilitation is vital to mitigate the negative impact that a lower-limb amputation has on a person.
OBJECTIVE:: To explore the barriers and facilitators to accessing rehabilitation experienced by persons with lower-limb amputations in a rural setting.
STUDY DESIGN:: A qualitative descriptive approach was used

BACKGROUND: Korean American women have among the lowest rates of cervical cancer screening in the United States. The authors evaluated a multicomponent intervention combining community education with navigation services to reduce access barriers and increase screening rates in this underserved population. It was hypothesized that cervical cancer screening rates would be higher among women who received the intervention program compared with those in the control program.
METHODS: Korean American women (N = 705) were recruited from 22 churches. In this matched-pair, group-randomized design, 347

PURPOSE: We studied whether entrance-related environmental barriers, perceived and objectively recorded, were associated with moving out-of-home daily in older people with and without limitations in lower extremity performance.
METHODS: Cross-sectional analyses of the "Life-space mobility in old age" cohort including 848 community-dwelling 75-90-year-old of central Finland. Participants reported their frequency of moving out-of-home (daily vs. 0-6 times/week) and perceived entrance-related environmental barriers (yes/no). Lower extremity performance was assessed (Short Physical Performance Ba

CONTEXT: Despite the lifesaving benefits of organ and tissue donation, a worldwide shortage of suitable and registered donors exists. Although the reasons for this shortage are multifactorial, it has been recognized that distinct barriers to registration, family discussion, and consent that require targeted intervention and action are present among minority cultural, religious, and immigrant communities.
OBJECTIVE: To explore the knowledge, attitudes, and beliefs of 3 orthodox religious communities in Australia (Macedonian, Greek, and Serbian Orthodox) and determine the implications for engag

INTRODUCTION: Motivated by the urgent need to address urban health inequities, this scoping review critiques the mainstream public health discourse that champions therapeutic urban agriculture (UA) as an accessible mental health intervention. This narrative often obscures the systemic spatial inequities and structural barriers marginalized populations face. To address this gap, we systematically mapped the physical, economic, and institutional mechanisms impeding therapeutic UA for vulnerable communities.
METHODS: Adhering to JBI and PRISMA-ScR methodologies, we executed a systematic retrieva

INTRODUCTION: The Philippines is among the most disaster-prone countries globally, with recurrent typhoons, earthquakes and volcanic eruptions significantly disrupting healthcare delivery, particularly in geographically isolated and disadvantaged areas. Despite existing disaster risk reduction frameworks, gaps persist in ensuring equitable and continuous access to healthcare during and after disasters.
METHODS AND ANALYSIS: This study will employ a convergent parallel mixed-methods design to assess barriers to healthcare access and identify context-specific solutions in disaster-affected comm

BACKGROUND: Malaria remains a critical global health challenge, with over 68% of Ethiopia's population living in at-risk areas. While Long-Lasting Insecticidal Nets (LLINs) are a cornerstone of prevention, their effectiveness depends on consistent use. This study aimed to assess LLIN ownership and utilization patterns and identify socio-behavioral and physical determinants of their effectiveness in endemic communities.
METHODS: A community-based, cross-sectional survey was conducted from October 2024 to January 2025 across 11 administrative regions in Ethiopia. Using a two-stage stratified cl

PURPOSE: Genomic testing informs treatment decisions for estrogen receptor-positive, progesterone receptor-positive, and HER2-negative early-stage breast cancer, yet uptake remains disproportionately low among racially and ethnically minoritized and low-income populations. Understanding the multilevel barriers driving these disparities is essential for equitable delivery of personalized cancer care. This study explores barriers to and potential solutions for equitable access to genomic testing, incorporating perspectives from patients, caregivers, clinicians, navigators, payers, and policymake

This study adopted a scoping review methodology to analyze international literature on the barriers impacting Muslim couples' access to equitable assisted reproductive technologies (ART). A total of 27 studies were included for review. Results show that Muslim communities face several barriers when accessing ART. These include cultural and religious barriers that impacted which aspects of ART couples were open to adopting, diminished quality of care due to low cultural/religious capacity of practitioners, as well as gendered norms which intersect with experiences of ART treatments. Eating disorders, especially anorexia nervosa, are complex and devastating illnesses. Although eating disorders have a high mortality rate and are relatively common, there are many barriers for those seeking treatment. Provider training and education, weight bias among health care providers, geographical and language barriers, and a lack of options because of insurance restrictions prevent many families from receiving appropriate care, especially in smaller or rural communities. In those areas, providers are left to piece together treatment using a small number of other providers from differen

PURPOSE: Child and adolescent myopia is a widespread public health problem worldwide, with high incidence, low age at onset, and severe symptoms. Family management plays a very important role in the prevention and management of myopia in children and adolescents; however, even with knowledge of the health risks of myopia, parents still continue to selectively ignore the importance of visual health, resulting in difficulties with family care related to childhood and adolescent myopia. The purpose of this study was to explore the barriers to family intervention for child and adolescent vision.
