Health authorities' health risk communication with the public during pandemics: a rapid scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Responses from the H1N1 swine flu pandemic and the recent COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic provide an opportunity for insight into the role of health authorities' ways of communicating health risk information to the public. We aimed to synthesise the existing evidence regarding different modes of communication used by health authorities in health risk communication with the public during a pandemic. METHODS: We conducted a rapid scoping review. MEDLINE and EMBASE were searched for publications in English from January 2009 through October 2020, covering both the full H1N1 pandemic and

Visual digital intermediaries and global climate communication: Is climate change still a distant problem on YouTube?

This article addresses the role of digital intermediaries in visual climate communication, and specifically their contribution to the persistence of a 'green ghetto' of traditional communicators and repertoires online. We argue for a comparative sensibility: global platforms convey global issues to global audiences, yet the same platform may distribute conditions of visibility for compelling communication unevenly around the world. The study analyses how a major global visual platform, YouTube (Search), articulates climate change in 232 countries in their official languages. It combines API re

Pharmacological topics of interest for young people: misinformation on TikTok is common.

TikTok is a popular social media platform for young people. This paper aims to investigate the quality of pharmacological content of interest to young people on TikTok. 121 TikTok posts were analysed. The main parameters chosen were presence of misinformation, number of likes/views/comments, advertisement, occupational group, and source of reference. Sex hormones, opioids, and illicit drugs were the most popular topics. Eleven (9%) of 121 posts contained an advertisement. There was significantly more misinformation present in these videos than in posts without advertising. Most posts displayed

Exploring frames of environmental crises on Twitter and Weibo: Crisis communication about Hurricane Maria and haze.

There is limited knowledge about how crises are framed on different social media platforms specifically in a non-Western cultural context. This study compares how extreme environmental crises-Hurricane Maria and haze-were framed on Twitter and Weibo. Through word-cloud, co-occurrence, and thematic analyses with Hurricane Maria-related tweets, this study identified two major frames of this crisis: a disaster frame and a political frame. Similarly, by analyzing haze-related posts on Sina Weibo, two major frames emerged: an environmental frame and a health frame. Both crises were largely framed a

Monitoring Misinformation on Twitter During Crisis Events: A Machine Learning Approach.

Social media has been increasingly utilized to spread breaking news and risk communications during disasters of all magnitudes. Unfortunately, due to the unmoderated nature of social media platforms such as Twitter, rumors and misinformation are able to propagate widely. Given this, a surfeit of research has studied false rumor diffusion on Twitter, especially during natural disasters. Within this domain, studies have also focused on the misinformation control efforts from government organizations and other major agencies. A prodigious gap in research exists in studying the monitoring of misin

Using social media listening to understand barriers to genomic medicine for those living with Ehlers-Danlos syndromes and hypermobility spectrum disorders.

INTRODUCTION: Technological improvements alone have not led to the integration of genomic medicine across a broad range of diseases and populations. For genomic medicine to be successfully implemented across specialties and conditions, the challenges patients and caregivers experience need to be identified using a multi-faceted understanding of the context in which these obstacles occur and how they are experienced. Individuals affected by rare conditions, like Ehlers-Danlos syndromes (EDS) and hypermobility spectrum disorders (HSD), express numerous challenges with accessing genomic medicine.

Media Exposure and the Risk of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Following a Mass traumatic Event: An In-silico Experiment.

Introduction: Following mass traumatic events, greater exposure to traditional media like television (TV) about the event is associated with higher burden of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). However, we know little about how social media exposure, combined with other media sources, shapes the population burden of PTSD following mass traumatic events. Materials and Methods: We built a microsimulation of 1,18,000 agents that was demographically comparable to the population of Parkland and Coral Springs, Florida that experienced the Stoneman Douglas High School shooting in 2018. We parametr

Public policy for healthy living: How COVID-19 has changed the landscape.

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic had a transformational impact on public policy as governments played a leading role, working alongside and coordinating with business/industry, healthcare, public health, education, transportation, researchers, non-governmental organizations, philanthropy, and media/communications. This paper summarizes the impact of the pandemic on different areas of public policy affecting healthy living and cardiovascular health including prevention (i.e., nutrition, physical activity, air quality, tobacco use), risk factors for chronic disease (hypertension,

Letter to the Editor regarding "Social media use and roles of self-objectification, self-compassion and body image concerns: a systematic review".

The systematic review by Sarda et al. synthesizes relationships among social media use, self-objectification, self-compassion, and body image concerns while evaluating evidence relevant to the revised objectification theory model proposed by Wollast and colleagues. This letter extends the authors' call for more rigorous examination of social media use by arguing for greater specificity in conceptualizing digitally mediated appearance experiences. Rather than treating social media as a single exposure or relying on a broad passive/active distinction, we propose examining configurations of conte

How Do Social Media Influencers Support College Students' Mental Well-Being? A Theory-Driven Content Analysis of YouTube Videos on Mental Health.

Grounded in social learning theory, this study investigates the impact of social media influencers (SMIs) on the mental well-being of college students through YouTube videos. By analyzing 115 videos from 88 influencers with over 5,000 subscribers, this study identifies distinct communication strategies tied to influencer attributes. Notably, findings reveal that strategies such as cultivating affective social presence, showing identification with friends and mental health organizations, and incorporating narrative evidence, are positively linked to increased user commenting behavior. The study

Culturally and linguistically appropriate vaccine education (CLAVE) for Indigenous communities: design and implementation study of a community-based approach to digital vaccine education in the Central Highlands of Guatemala.

BACKGROUND: In Guatemala, childhood vaccination rates, particularly in Indigenous communities, are low due to inaccessible information and mistrust. Using a human-centered design (HCD) process with community partners, we developed CLAVE (Culturally and Linguistically Appropriate Vaccine Education), a video series on routine and human papillomavirus (HPV) immunization in Kaqchikel, K’iche’, and Spanish. Content was distributed via social media and through community health workers (CHWs). This study describes the instructional design process and assesses implementation feasibility through commun

Is Social Media a Boon or Bane for Orthodontics in the Current Digital Age: A Cross-Sectional Electronic Survey.

BACKGROUND: Social media is an online platform where people share their experiences, perspectives, and opinions individually or in groups. There has been a rapid increase in internet users after the introduction of social media sites such as Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, and Twitter. Other than primary means of communication, social media aids in distributing healthcare information among professionals and patients. It enhances the knowledge of health care to the patients, but on the contrary, patients can be misguided by false information influenced by unauthorized professionals as it is readi

Narratives and risk: how stories shape perceptions regarding food safety of dairy products, a narrative review.

Perceptions regarding dairy product safety are often strongly shaped by narratives that emphasise rare, high-profile events more than routine evidence-based risk assessments. This paper examines how technical and non-technical communications contributed to persistent, and sometimes disproportionate, public concern about infant formula by comparing timelines and messaging for two case studies: (i) the 2008 melamine adulteration crisis in China and (ii) the March-April 2025 Consumer Reports survey of chemical contaminants in infant formula. Using a combined scientific literature and media-timeli

'For the First Time, I Felt Seen': Understanding What Helps Autistic Emerging Adults Feel Safe and Included on Social Media.

Social media is a prominent part of everyday life and is used regularly to connect users with a diverse network of content and people from around the world. Research on social media among autistic individuals has largely focused on online risks (e.g., cyberbullying) among children and adolescents, with limited attention to the perspectives of autistic emerging adults (i.e., aged 18-29), particularly regarding social media safety and inclusion. The aim of this qualitative study was to understand what helps autistic emerging adults feel safe and included on social media, focusing on their lived
