Factors associated with prior completion of colorectal cancer and hepatitis C virus screenings among community health center patients: a cross-sectional study to inform a multi-behavioral educational intervention.

BACKGROUND: Colorectal cancer (CRC) and liver cancer are two of the leading causes of cancer death in the United States and persistent disparities in CRC and liver cancer incidence and outcomes exist. Chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is one of the main contributors to liver cancer. Effective screening for both CRC and HCV exist and are recommended for individuals based upon age, regardless of gender or sex assigned at birth. Recommendations for both screening behaviors have been recently updated. However, screening rates for both CRC and HCV are suboptimal. Targeting adoption of multi

Comparative effectiveness trial comparing MyPlate to calorie counting for mostly low-income Latino primary care patients of a federally qualified community health center: study design, baseline characteristics.

BACKGROUND: Primary care-based behavior change obesity treatment has long featured the Calorie restriction (CC), portion control approach. By contrast, the MyPlate-based obesity treatment approach encourages eating more high-satiety/high-satiation foods and requires no calorie-counting. This report describes study methods of a comparative effectiveness trial of CC versus MyPlate. It also describes baseline findings involving demographic characteristics and their associations with primary outcome measures and covariates, including satiety/satiation, dietary quality and acculturation. METHODS:

Short Communication: Ongoing Impact of the Social Determinants of Health During the Second and Third Waves of the COVID-19 Pandemic in People Living with HIV Receiving Care in a Montreal-Based Tertiary Care Center.

We performed retrospective chart reviews and described the clinical characteristics, exposure risks, and disease severity of people living with HIV (PLWH) attending the Chronic Viral Illness Service (CVIS) in Montreal, Canada, who developed coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) during September 2020-August 2021, coinciding with the second and third waves of the pandemic. A total of 61 PLWH with a positive COVID-19 polymerase chain reaction were identified, giving a COVID-19 prevalence of 5%. The most common exposure risk for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) during wav

Rifampin and pyrazinamide vs isoniazid for prevention of tuberculosis in HIV-infected persons: an international randomized trial. Terry Beirn Community Programs for Clinical Research on AIDS, the Adult AIDS Clinical Trials Group, the Pan American Health Organization, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Study Group.

CONTEXT: Because of problems with adherence, toxicity, and increasing resistance associated with 6- to 12-month isoniazid regimens, an alternative short-course tuberculosis preventive regimen is needed. DESIGN: Randomized, open-label controlled trial conducted from September 1991 to May 1996, with follow-up through October 1997. SETTING: Outpatient clinics in the United States, Mexico, H

Blood from a Stone: A Rough Guide for Group Therapy Implementation in Community Mental Healthcare.

Despite its demonstrated efficacy, group therapy remains underutilized in community mental health centers (CMHCs), where structural barriers and a chronic shortfall of funds impede implementation. This article examines the disconnect between academic research and the financial, organizational, and policy constraints that shape care in safety-net settings. Drawing from direct experience at a CMHC serving marginalized populations, we offer a financial analysis that illustrates how current reimbursement models create steep challenges for sustaining group therapy. Guided by domain theory, we prese

Comparing the Quality of Primary Care between Public and Private Providers in Urban China: A Standardized Patient Study.

Previous studies have been limited by not directly comparing the quality of public and private CHCs using a standardized patient method (SP). This study aims to evaluate and compare the quality of the primary care provided by public and private CHCs using a standardized patient method in urban China. We recruited 12 standardized patients from the local community presenting fixed cases (unstable angina and asthma), including 492 interactions between physicians and standardized patients across 63 CHCs in Xi'an, China. We measured the quality of primary care on seven criteria: (1) adherence to ch

Community health worker encounter forms: a tool to guide and document patient visits and worker performance.

OBJECTIVES: We explored the benefits of using community health worker (CHW) encounter forms to collect data on patient interactions and assessed the effectiveness of these forms in guiding and directing interactions. METHODS: A 1-page standardized encounter form was developed to document topics discussed during visits with diabetes patients. A portion of the form was designed to be used as a script to guide the interaction and assist patients in setting appropriate self-management goals. Data were also collected via CHW work logs and interviews with CHWs and their supervisors to validate find

Evaluating the role of blood collection centers in public health: a status report.

Blood centers have a central role in the community through recruitment and donation, and these community interactions enable blood centers to have a critical role in public health. Some public health initiatives are inherent in the blood center, such as providing human immunodeficiency virus educational material, whereas other initiatives have been actively created, such as cardiovascular screening, as a means to increase blood donor rates and increase the blood center's community interaction. These public health initiatives have been inconsistently practiced by blood collection centers over m

Implementation of nursing services in community corrections: A community-academic partnership.

Persons who are incarcerated (PWAI) suffer from a disproportionately higher number of physical and mental health conditions. While most jails and prisons provide onsite healthcare, community correctional centers often do not and accessing community healthcare is challenging due to insurance issues, inadequate health literacy, mistrust, and long waits for appointments. A registered nurse-led wellness clinic provides a viable solution to addressing the healthcare needs of PWAI in a community correctional setting. Through a community-academic partnership between a college of nursing and two commu

Availability of Assertive Community Treatment in the United States: 2010 to 2016.

OBJECTIVE: The study examined change in availability of assertive community treatment (ACT) and associated services over time. METHODS: Change over time in the availability of facilities in the United States offering ACT and its associated services was examined by using 2010 and 2016 data from the National Mental Health Services Survey. RESULTS: The proportion of facilities that self-reported provision of ACT and its associated services declined between 2010 and 2016 (odds ratio [OR]=0.73, 95% confidence interval [CI]=0.63-0.86, p<0.001).
