The combination of compost or biochar with urea and NBPT can improve nitrogen-use efficiency in maize.

The addition of organic residues to agricultural soils has been used as a practical alternative to improve crop quality and health. The objective of this work was to evaluate maize physiological and nutritional responses to the application of compost and biochar combined with urea (N) and N-(n-butyl) thiophosphoric triamide (NBPT). The experiment was performed in plastic pots with 3 kg of soil under greenhouse conditions for 30 days. The compost and biochar were applied at the rate of 0.3 ton ha-1, using an amount of nutrient (nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium) demanded by crop growth. The ph

Comparing the desorption and biodegradation of low concentrations of phenanthrene sorbed to activated carbon, biochar and compost.

Carbonaceous soil amendments are applied to contaminated soils and sediments to strongly sorb hydrophobic organic contaminants (HOCs) and reduce their freely dissolved concentrations. This limits biouptake and toxicity, but also biodegradation. To investigate whether HOCs sorbed to such amendments can be degraded at all, the desorption and biodegradation of low concentrations of (14)C-labelled phenanthrene (≤5 μg L(-1)) freshly sorbed to suspensions of the pure soil amendments activated carbon (AC), biochar (charcoal) and compost were compared. Firstly, the maximum abiotic desorption of phenan

Antibiotic resistance profiles and virulence markers of Pseudomonas aeruginosa strains isolated from composts.

The aim of our work was to determine the presence of Pseudomonas aeruginosa in compost raw materials, immature and mature compost, and compost-treated soil. Twenty-five strains of P. aeruginosa were isolated from a raw material (plant straw), immature and mature compost and compost-treated soil samples. The strains were identified using the PCR method for the detection of species specific variable regions of 16S rDNA. Strains were examined for the presence of five different virulence-related gene sequences (exoA, exoU, exoT, exoS and exoY) and their antibiotic resistance profiles were determin

Biogeochemistry of the compost bioreactor components of a composite acid mine drainage passive remediation system.

The compost bioreactor ("anaerobic cell") components of three composite passive remediation systems constructed to treat acid mine drainage (AMD) at the former Wheal Jane tin mine, Cornwall, UK were studied over a period of 16 months. While there was some amelioration of the preprocessed AMD in each of the three compost bioreactors, as evidenced by pH increase and decrease in metal concentrations, only one of the cells showed effective removal of the two dominant heavy metals (iron and zinc) present. With two of the compost bioreactors, concentrations of soluble (ferrous) iron draining the cel

Enhancing pyrene mineralization in contaminated soil by the addition of humic acids or composted contaminated soil.

The addition of composted PAH-contaminated soil to PAH-contaminated soil spiked with 14C-labeled pyrene resulted in rapid mineralization of pyrene (more than 57% after 21 days compared with 3.4% in un-amended soil). The addition of the humic acid fraction of the composted soil also increased the mineralization potential of the soil significantly, but to a lesser extent (37.5% mineralization after 106 days compared with 20.6% in unamended soil). Increasing the humic acid concentration increased mineralization up to a maximum of more than three times the unamended rate, after which the rate of p

Microplastics exacerbate antibiotic resistance by regulating microbial and functional gene dynamics in sludge and food waste composting.

The presence of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and microplastics (MPs) as co-contaminants in sewage sludge possess environmental concern. Nevertheless, the effect of specific MP types on ARGs propagation and the mechanistic drivers during composting require further elucidation. This study analyzed the impact of MPs polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), and their mixture (PE+PP) on the propagation of ARGs and mobile genetic elements (MGEs) during sludge composting. Results revealed that MPs significantly increased ARGs abundance, with the highest enrichment observed in PE (2.06 log-fold),

Hydrogen peroxide-aged biochar mitigating greenhouse gas emissions during co-composting of swine manure with rice bran.

Compared to fresh biochar, aged biochar has a more significant effect on mitigating greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in farmland soil. However, there is a relative scarcity of research addressing this effect in aerobic composting. In this study, a co-composting of swine manure and rice bran (NBC), with the addition of fresh biochar (FBC) and hydrogen peroxide-aged biochar (ABC), was conducted to investigate the dynamic changes in physicochemical properties, microbial communities, GHG emissions and related functional genes during different periods. In comparison to NBC, FBC led to a 32 % decrease

Multi-model machine learning framework for prediction of greenhouse gas emissions during composting of organic solid waste.

Accurate prediction and regulation of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions during composting are essential for mitigating global warming. Herein, two multi-model machine learning frameworks were developed based on Gradient Boosting Regression, Extreme Gradient Boosting, and Extra Trees Regression algorithms. In particular, the modular multi-model demonstrated superior performance in predicting CO2, CH4, and N2O emissions, achieving R2 values of 0.9662, 0.9729, and 0.9051, respectively. The stacking ensemble model also exhibited high accuracy in cumulative emission prediction (R2 = 0.9278). SHapley A

Assessment of Different Strategies for Composting of the Two-Phase Olive Mill Solid Waste: A Demonstrative Scale.

Thousands of tons of two-phase olive mill solid waste (2P-OMSW) are generated annually, necessitating effective valorization strategies. Composting has been widely explored as a management approach; however, the extended processing time required for these residues poses a significant challenge for the olive industry. In this study, a forced aeration system combined with a semipermeable cover was implemented at a demonstrative scale to enhance the composting process and reduce its duration. Additionally, process optimization was evaluated through a two-stage composting strategy. In stage I, com

Effects of biochar-loaded microbial agent in regulating nitrogen transformation and integration into humification for straw composting.

Exogenous additives can impact organic matter transformation in composting, but their effects on nitrogen conversion and humification in straw composting require clarification. This study investigated how rice husk biochar-loaded microbial agent (RM) affects nitrogen transformation and humification during straw composting. Results showed that the addition of RM enhanced ammonia oxidation and assimilation during composting, leading to a 10.32%-22.27% increase in total nitrogen content. Furthermore, the RM treatment enriched nitrogen-converting microbes such as Longispora and Coprinopsis, enhanc

Fate of antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes during aerobic co-composting of food waste with sewage sludge.

Aerobic composting is widely used on transforming organic solid waste into proliferating products. However, the removal of antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in the process of co-composting of food waste with sewage sludge has been rarely reported to date. Therefore, we investigated a laboratory-scale composting using food waste and sewage sludge as substrates to study changes in antibiotics and ARGs during composting. Varying dose of antibiotics were added to allow the evaluation of changes in antibiotics, the microbial community and ARGs. The results revealed that composting

Influence of Initial C/N Ratio on Chemical and Microbial Composition during Long Term Composting of Straw.

Shredded straw of Miscanthus was composted in 800-L boxes with different amounts of pig slurry added as nitrogen source. The impact of the different initial C/N ratios (11, 35, 47, 50, and 54) on the composting process and the end product was evaluated by examining chemical and microbiological parameters during 12 months of composting. Low initial C/N ratios caused a fast degradation of fibers during the first three months of composting (hemicellulose: 50-80%, cellulose: 40-60%), while high initial C/N ratios resulted in 10-20% degradation of both hemicellulose and cellulose. These differences
