Refining the diagnostic boundaries of compulsive hoarding: a critical review.

Like most human behaviors, saving and collecting possessions can range from totally normal and adaptive to excessive or pathological. Hoarding, or compulsive hoarding, are some of the more commonly used terms to refer to this excessive form of collectionism. Hoarding is highly prevalent and, when severe, it is associated with substantial functional disability and represents a great burden for the sufferers, their families, and society in general. It is generally considered difficult to treat. Hoarding can occur in the context of a variety of neurological and psychiatric conditions. Although it

Clomipramine-induced tourettism in obsessive-compulsive disorder: clinical and theoretical implications.

We report a case in which vocal and motor tics (Tourettism) developed after the administration of clomipramine hydrochloride in a young patient with obsessive compulsive disorder and schizoid personality disorder. Several hypotheses for this occurrence are proposed based on the suggested pathogenesis of Tourette syndrome.

Personality disorders and its association with anxiety and depression among patients of severe acne: A cross-sectional study from Eastern India.

BACKGROUND: In many patients, emotional stress may exacerbate acne. Psychological problems such as social phobias, low self-esteem, or depression may also occur as a result of acne. The presence of acne may have some negative effect on the quality of life, self-esteem, and mood of the affected patients. While some studies have been undertaken about anxiety, depression, and personality patterns in patients with acne, only a few studies have been done to identify specific personality disorders in patients with acne. Furthermore, there is a dearth of data regarding the effect of personality disor

Clinicians' emotional responses and Psychodynamic Diagnostic Manual adult personality disorders: A clinically relevant empirical investigation.

The aim of this study is to explore the relationship between level of personality organization and type of personality disorder as assessed with the categories in the Psychodynamic Diagnostic Manual (PDM; PDM Task Force, 2006) and the emotional responses of treating clinicians. We asked 148 Italian clinicians to assess 1 of their adult patients in treatment for personality disorders with the Psychodiagnostic Chart (PDC; Gordon & Bornstein, 2012) and the Personality Diagnostic Prototype (PDP; Gazzillo, Lingiardi, & Del Corno, 2012) and to complete the Therapist Response Questionnaire (TRQ; Beta

Comorbidity of personality disorders and unipolar major depression: a review.

The association of major depressive disorders with personality disorders is relevant in terms of clinical, therapeutic and prognostic aspects. However, the prevalence of this association remains unclear. This may be due to methodological considerations. Nonetheless, it could be estimated from this review that 20% to 50% of inpatients and 50% to 85% of out-patients with a current major depressive disorder have an associated personality disorder. Cluster B personality disorders, in particular borderline (10-30%), histrionic (2-20%) and antisocial (0-10%), seem to be overrepresented, even if the

Complex brain networks mediation of neuroticism and extraversion on obsessive-compulsive disorder.

BACKGROUND: Personality traits significantly influence obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), yet their underlying neural mechanisms remain poorly defined. This study aimed to identify complex brain networks that mediate the association between personality traits and OCD, offering novel insights for personalized interventions. METHODS: We recruited 211 OCD patients who underwent clinical evaluations and rs-EEG recordings. Personality traits were measured using the Revised NEO-Five Factor Inventory, and OCD severity was assessed with the Yale-Brown Obsessive-Compulsive Scale by clinicians. Compl

Recovery and Nonrecovery After Psychotherapy With Transference Interpretation: Two Case Studies.

The First Experimental Study of Transference Interpretation (FEST), conducted in Norway, is a dismantling, randomized clinical trial of the long-term effects of transference interpretation (TI). This article examines two case studies of women with poor quality of object relations (QOR), one who was rated as recovered after psychotherapy and one who was rated as not recovered. Both received TI. In general, women with poor QOR needed TI to recover, but some members of this group did not recover, even with TI. The therapist's negative countertransference and tendency to use controlling interventi

Problematic overstudying: Studyholism or study addiction?

This commentary addresses Griffiths et al. (2018)'s sixth myth about work addiction. We agree that work addiction could also be spread in the school context, although we propose that problematic overstudying may be more similar to an obsession than to an addiction toward the study. We refer to the DSM-5 diagnostic criteria related to the obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and the substance-use disorder, presenting some theoretical considerations related to the similarities and differences between problematic overstudying and these two diagnoses. Finally, we focus on the obsessive-compulsive p

Psychogenic excoriation. Clinical features, proposed diagnostic criteria, epidemiology and approaches to treatment.

Psychogenic excoriation (also called neurotic excoriation, acne excoriée, pathological or compulsive skin picking, and dermatotillomania) is characterised by excessive scratching or picking of normal skin or skin with minor surface irregularities. It is estimated to occur in 2% of dermatology clinic patients and is associated with functional impairment, medical complications (e.g. infection) or substantial distress. Psychogenic excoriation is not yet recognised in the DSM. We propose preliminary operational criteria for its diagnosis that take into account the heterogeneity of behaviour associ

[Treatment of compulsive buying].

Although compulsive buying is receiving increasing attention in research, it is largely ignored in clinical practice. Compulsive buying disorder (CBD) is defined as excessive and mostly senseless spending or excessive shopping impulses that cause marked distress, interfere with social or occupational functioning, and often results in financial problems. It is currently conceptualized as an "impulse control disorder not otherwise specified" (ICD-10 F63.9). CBD is associated with significant psychiatric co-morbidity particularly mood and anxiety disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorders, binge e

The longitudinal relationship between personality disorder dimensions and global functioning in a community-residing population.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about the long-term outcome of personality disorder traits. The purpose of this study was to investigate, in a community-residing population, the longitudinal relationship between psychiatrist-assessed personality disorder scores and global functioning 13-18 years later. METHOD: A stratified random sample of residents of east Baltimore were examined by psychiatrists in 1981 and asssessed for DSM-III personality disorders using a semi-structured instrument, the Standardized Psychiatric Examination. A total of 292 persons were re-examined by different psychiatrists d

Editorial: Outcome Measurement in Pediatric Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder: Current Considerations and Future Directions.

Our understanding of pediatric obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) has come a long way since the important book by Paul Adams. In ;this 1973 book, Obsessive Children: A Sociopsychiatric Study, Adams described 49 youth with OCD, albeit with some blurring of OCD and obsessive-compulsive personality disorder. The proposed etiology of OCD rested on psychoanalytic principles and the social psychiatric perspective. This perspective emphasized the importance of social factors in the emergence of mental illness, including OCD. A prevailing view at the time asserted that OCD was a rare, episodic condit

Latent profile analysis of impulsivity and perfectionism dimensions and associations with psychiatric symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Impulsivity and perfectionism are transdiagnostic personality factors that have been studied extensively and shown to relate to externalizing and internalizing pathology respectively. Typically, these personality factors are antithesized, with impulsivity characterized by lack of control and perfectionism characterized by rigid overcontrol. METHODS: The current study (N = 1,353 undergraduate students) used latent profile analysis to identify subgroups based on impulsivity and perfectionism dimensions and tested the relations of these subgroups with the symptomatology of ten preval
