Temporal muscle thickness: A new tool to assess sarcopenia in Parkinson's disease.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Parkinson's disease is a neurodegenerative disorder cha- racterized by motor symptoms such as tremor, rigidity and bradykinesia. However, it can also lead to non-motor symptoms such as cognitive impairments and sarcopenia. The aim of this study is to evaluate the relationship between screening and diagnostic methods for sarcopenia and temporal muscle thickness in Parkinson's disease patients, and to assess the utility of temporal muscle thickness measurement as an indicator of sarcopenia. METHODS: An observational study was conducted with Parkinson's disease patients i

Personalised digital interventions for reducing hazardous and harmful alcohol consumption in community-dwelling populations.

BACKGROUND: Excessive alcohol use contributes significantly to physical and psychological illness, injury and death, and a wide array of social harm in all age groups. A proven strategy for reducing excessive alcohol consumption levels is to offer a brief conversation-based intervention in primary care settings, but more recent technological innovations have enabled people to interact directly via computer, mobile device or smartphone with digital interventions designed to address problem alcohol consumption. OBJECTIVES: To assess the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of digital interventi

Eye-tracking-based tablet application for enhanced cognitive assessment: a clinical trial for software as a medical device (SaMD).

Efficient screening tools for cognitive decline and dementia are in high demand. We previously reported on a novel cognitive assessment tool using eye-tracking technology and its utility in dementia screening. In this study, we developed a tablet version of the eye-tracking-based cognitive assessment (ETCA) app and conducted a clinical trial to verify its clinical utility as software as a medical device (SaMD). Participants with and without dementia were enrolled between December 1, 2020, and July 31, 2021. They used the ETCA app and completed the most widely applied screening test, the Mini-M

Globally applicable solution to hearing loss screening: a diagnostic accuracy study of tablet-based audiometry.

OBJECTIVES: Hearing loss (HL) affects 20% of the world's population, with shortages of audiologists and audiometric sound booths unable to meet demand for hearing care services. We aimed to assess the accuracy of tablet-based audiometry (TA) to screen for HL at standard (0.25-8 kHz) and extended high frequencies (>8 kHz). DESIGN: Diagnostic accuracy study. SETTING: Two secondary care audiology and ear, nose and throat outpatient clinics in the UK between April 2022 and September 2023. PARTICIPANTS: Adults aged≥16 years undergoing sound booth audiometry (SBA). INTERVENTIONS: TA, hearing-rel

Conventional and tablet-supported physical training to reduce falls and fall-related injuries in community-dwelling older adults: protocol of the randomised SURE-footed into the future Fall Intervention Trial (SURE-FIT).

INTRODUCTION: Exercise-based interventions are well-established in reducing falls and fall-related injuries, but adherence and accessibility remain key challenges, particularly in rural areas. While conventional in-person training is widely used, digital interventions may offer scalable solutions to enhance engagement and reach. However, pragmatic trials evaluating the real-world effectiveness of conventional and digitally supported fall prevention interventions are lacking, limiting the evidence base for their implementation in routine healthcare settings. The SURE-Footed into the Future Fall

A Pilot Feasibility Study of a Home Tablet-Based Neurorehabilitation Program and Serial Brain Vital Sign Monitoring for Survivors of Pediatric Cerebral Malaria.

Lasting sequelae are identified in 50% of child survivors of cerebral malaria (CM). Rehabilitation options in malaria-endemic regions are scarce and largely focused on physical deficits, leaving children without support for cognitive recovery. Effective and accessible interventions are vital for improving outcomes. Furthermore, the assessment of brain function and recovery after CM is dependent on behavior-based tests that are time-consuming and require substantial training to administer. Objective, easy-to-use alternatives may be impactful. Children aged 3-12 years who had survived CM were re

Anxiety in Asperger's syndrome: Assessment in real time.

Anxiety is a major problem for many people with Asperger's syndrome who may have qualitatively different fears from a non-Asperger's syndrome population. Research has relied on measures developed for non-Asperger's syndrome populations that require reporting past experiences of anxiety, which may confound assessment in people with Asperger's syndrome due to problems with autobiographical memory as are often reported in this group.Experience sampling methodology was used to record real-time everyday experiences in 20 adults with Asperger's syndrome and 20 neurotypical adults. Within-subject ana

Reliability and validity of a mobile phone for radiographic assessment of ankle injuries: a randomized inter- and intraobserver agreement study.

BACKGROUND: Current mobile phone technology may allow orthopaedic surgeons to make clinical decisions using radiographs viewed on a small mobile device screen. The purpose of this study was to examine the reliability and validity of interpreting ankle fracture images viewed on a mobile device and a computer monitor, with a hypothesis that the agreement in clinical decision making between the mobile device and computer monitor would be high. METHODS: A randomized interobserver and intraobserver reliability study was conducted in which 16 mortise and lateral ankle images representing a severity

Cognitive structure and progression in Parkinson's disease: insights from a tablet-based assessment.

Cognitive impairment is an important constraint for PwPD with Parkinson's disease (PwPD). Digital assessments potentially provide more accessible measurements and obtain a richer set of data than traditional paper-pencil-based instruments. Open-source generation can support the availability of comparable assessments in different cohorts. A digital, tablet-based cognitive assessment (DiCo) comprising 13 distinct tests was implemented as an open-source tool, expanding on available frameworks. Commonly used tests were selected to cover response inhibition, cognitive flexibility, attention, and wo

Brief computer MI to motivate sustained tobacco cessation following psychiatric hospital discharge: Study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with serious mental illness (SMI) smoke at disproportionately higher rates than those without SMI. We demonstrated, in a randomized controlled trial (RCT) of 342 adult smokers receiving inpatient psychiatric care, that an in-person, motivational interviewing (MI)-based, Sustained Care (SusC) intervention vs. Usual Care (UC) resulted in significantly higher rates of confirmed smoking abstinence at 6-months post-hospital discharge and significantly increased smoking cessation treatment utilization. While successful, this SusC intervention would be challenging to implement

Tablet and web-based audiometry to screen for hearing loss in adults with cystic fibrosis.

INTRODUCTION: Individuals with chronic lung disease (eg, cystic fibrosis (CF)) often receive antimicrobial therapy including aminoglycosides resulting in ototoxicity. Extended high-frequency audiometry has increased sensitivity for ototoxicity detection, but diagnostic audiometry in a sound-booth is costly, time-consuming and requires a trained audiologist. This cross-sectional study analysed tablet-based audiometry (Shoebox MD) performed by non-audiologists in an outpatient setting, alongside home web-based audiometry (3D Tune-In) to screen for hearing loss in adults with CF. METHODS: Hearin

A Tablet-Based App for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Screening: Diagnostic Case-Control Study.

BACKGROUND: Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS), the most common neuropathy, is caused by a compression of the median nerve in the carpal tunnel and is related to aging. The initial symptom is numbness and pain of the median nerve distributed in the hand area, while thenar muscle atrophy occurs in advanced stages. This atrophy causes failure of thumb motion and results in clumsiness; even after surgery, thenar atrophy does not recover for an extended period. Medical examination and electrophysiological testing are useful to diagnose CTS; however, visits to the doctor tend to be delayed because patien

Using the iPad to facilitate interaction between preschool children who use AAC and their peers.

Social interaction is one of the key components of education, yet children with complex communication needs often face social isolation in the classroom, rarely interacting with same-age peers. This study investigated the impact of the provision of an iPad(®) (1) with an AAC app with visual scene displays and a dyadic turn taking training on the number of communicative turns taken by children with complex communication needs in interaction with same-age peers. Two preschool children with complex communication needs and six peers without disabilities participated in this research. A single-subj

Effect of a Binocular iPad Game vs Part-time Patching in Children Aged 5 to 12 Years With Amblyopia: A Randomized Clinical Trial.

IMPORTANCE: A binocular approach to treating anisometropic and strabismic amblyopia has recently been advocated. Initial studies have yielded promising results, suggesting that a larger randomized clinical trial is warranted. OBJECTIVE: To compare visual acuity (VA) improvement in children with amblyopia treated with a binocular iPad game vs part-time patching. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: A multicenter, noninferiority randomized clinical trial was conducted in community and institutional practices from September 16, 2014, to August 28, 2015. Participants included 385 children aged 5 y

The convergence of gambling and digital media: implications for gambling in young people.

Adolescents' use of the Internet and other digital media for the purpose of gambling represents a serious concern in modern society. This paper overviews some of the available monetary and non-monetary forms of gambling within new digital and online media and monetary forms of games with gambling-like experiences. With reference to current psychological knowledge on the risk factors that promote adolescent gambling, it is suggested that new gambling technologies may: (a) make gambling more accessible and attractive to young people, (b) may promote factually incorrect information about gambling

Electromagnetic interference with pacemakers caused by portable media players.

BACKGROUND: Electromagnetic fields generated by electrical devices may cause interference with permanent pacemakers. Media players are becoming a common mode of portable entertainment. The most common media players used worldwide are iPods. These devices are often carried in a shirt chest pocket, which may place the devices close to an implanted pacemaker. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to determine if iPods cause interference with pacemakers. METHOD: In this prospective, single-blinded study, 100 patients who had cardiac pacemakers were tested with four types of iPods to assess fo

Validation of rule-based inference of selected independent activities of daily living.

This paper explores the validity of a rule-based inference method of selected independent activities of daily living (ADLs). An inexpensive ADL monitoring system was installed in the community for 37 days to monitor a middle-aged, healthy individual living alone. The subject was given a personal digital assistant (PDA), running custom activity diary software, and asked to record activities in real-time. Rule-based activity inference algorithms were refined on data from 17 days, and data from the remaining 20 days were used for validation. The chisquare statistic was computed for 2 x 2 continge

Using deep learning to identify the recurrent laryngeal nerve during thyroidectomy.

Surgeons must visually distinguish soft-tissues, such as nerves, from surrounding anatomy to prevent complications and optimize patient outcomes. An accurate nerve segmentation and analysis tool could provide useful insight for surgical decision-making. Here, we present an end-to-end, automatic deep learning computer vision algorithm to segment and measure nerves. Unlike traditional medical imaging, our unconstrained setup with accessible handheld digital cameras, along with the unstructured open surgery scene, makes this task uniquely challenging. We investigate one common procedure, thyroide

Multi-wave prospective examination of the stress-reactivity extension of response styles theory of depression in high-risk children and early adolescents.

The current study tested the stress-reactivity extension of response styles theory of depression (Nolen-Hoeksema Journal of Abnormal Psychology 100:569-582, 1991) in a sample of high-risk children and early adolescents from a vulnerability-stress perspective using a multi-wave longitudinal design. In addition, we examined whether obtained results varied as a function of either age or sex. During an initial assessment, 56 high-risk children (offspring of depressed parents; ages 7-14) completed measures assessing rumination and depressive symptoms. Children were subsequently given a handheld per

Alignment and early clinical outcomes following total knee arthroplasty using a handheld navigation system compared to conventional instruments.

INTRODUCTION: Proper lower extremity alignment is important for success and longevity of total knee arthroplasty (TKA). Conventional instrumentation has demonstrated higher rates of mechanical axis (MA) malalignment compared to robotic or computer navigated surgery. The purpose of this study is to compare the alignment and early clinical outcomes between a handheld implant agnostic navigation system and conventional instrumentation. METHODS: 117 patients who underwent single-stage bilateral TKA were prospectively studied. The distal femoral and proximal tibial resections were performed using
