Stable and affordable phosphonates removal by iron scrap packed-bed anode electrocoagulation under realistic conditions: Mechanism and passivation mitigation over long-term operation.

Iron electrocoagulation (Fe-EC) exhibits broad application in water remediation towards various pollutants, including emerging organic phosphorus compounds (i.e., phosphonates). However, it suffers relatively high costs due to the frequent replacement of iron anode consumables, particularly electrode fouling. Here we report an iron scrap packed-bed (ISPB) anode electrocoagulation (EC) system for efficiently removing phosphonate. In Na2SO4, NaCl and NaHCO3 electrolytes, the ISPB-EC system effectively removed 39-99% of nitrilotrimethylene triphosphonic acid (NTMP) with 0.1 mM total soluble phosp

Characterization of operant social interaction in rats: effects of access duration, effort, peer familiarity, housing conditions, and choice between social interaction vs. food or remifentanil.

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVE: Social factors play a critical role in drug addiction. We recently showed that rats will abstain from methamphetamine, cocaine, heroin, and remifentanil self-administration when given a choice between the addictive drug and operant social interaction. Here, we further characterized operant social interaction by determining the effects of access duration, effort, peer familiarity, and housing conditions. We also determined choice between social interaction vs. palatable food or remifentanil. METHODS: We first trained single-housed male and female rats to lever-press fo

Analytic Gradients for the Electrostatic Embedding QM/MM Model in Periodic Boundary Conditions Using Particle-Mesh Ewald Sums and Electrostatic Potential Fitted Charge Operators.

Long-range electrostatic effects are fundamental for describing chemical reactivity in the condensed phase. Here, we present the methodology of an efficient quantum mechanical/molecular mechanical (QM/MM) model in periodic boundary conditions (PBC) compatible with QM/MM boundaries at chemical bonds. The method combines electrostatic potential fitted charge operators and electrostatic potentials derived from the smooth particle-mesh Ewald (PME) sum approach. The total energy and its analytic first derivatives with respect to QM, MM, and lattice vectors allow QM/MM molecular dynamics (MD) in the

Generalization of pain-related avoidance behavior based on de novo categorical knowledge.

People with chronic pain often fear and avoid movements and activities that were never paired with pain. Safe movements may be avoided if they share some semantic relationship with an actual pain-associated movement. This study investigated whether pain-associated operant responses (movements) can become categorically associated with perceptually dissimilar responses, thus motivating avoidance of new classes of safe movements-a phenomenon known as category-based avoidance generalization. Using a robotic arm, 2 groups were trained to categorize arm movements in different ways. Subsequently, the

Context-dependent effects of social isolation and behavioural recovery in two populations of Lymnaea stagnalis.

Social context is a key modulator of behaviour and cognition across taxa, yet the effects of social isolation (SI) and subsequent recovery remain poorly characterised in invertebrate systems. Here, we developed a longitudinal behavioural procedure to examine how SI and social reintroduction (SR) influence feeding, exploration, and operant conditioning behavioural assays in the pond snail Lymnaea stagnalis. To capture biologically relevant variation, we compared two populations with differing environmental backgrounds: a long-established laboratory strain (W) and a "wild" population (TC1). Isol

Effects of Four Different EEG-Neurofeedback Reinforcement Types in Healthy Individuals - A Pilot Study.

EEG neurofeedback (EEG-NFB) is a promising tool for the treatment of depressive disorders. However, many methods for the presentation of neurobiological reactions are available and it is widely unknown which of these feedback options are preferrable. Moreover, the influence of motivation on NFB training success is insufficiently studied. This study analyzed the efficacy of a novel EEG protocol (FC3/Pz) based on findings for NFB in depression. The role of four feedback options (Rumination, Anxiety, Meditation Master, Moving Art) from the NFB software "Brain Assistant" and motivation in EEG-base

Design and development of a modified runway model of mouse drug self-administration.

The present study established a novel mouse model of a runway drug self-administration in our laboratory. The operant runway apparatus consisted of three long runways arranged in a zig-zag manner. The methodology consisted of six distinct phases: habituation, preconditioning, conditioning, post-conditioning, extinction and reinstatement. The effects of saline were compared with escalating doses of either ethanol (0.5-4.0 g/kg, i.p), heroin (5-40 mg/kg, i.p), or nicotine (0.1-0.5mg/kg, i.p) administered in the goal box during the conditioning phase (day 1 to day 5). Protocol for recording neuronal activity in food and cocaine self-administration in freely behaving mice using calcium imaging.

In vivo calcium imaging has revealed complex neural activity during operant conditioning. Here, we present a protocol for large-scale, long-term recording of neural activity in freely behaving mice using viral injection, gradient lens implantation, and miniscope imaging during food and cocaine administration. We describe daily administration guidelines for comparing food- and cocaine-seeking behaviors. We further detail the procedures for the simultaneous self-administration of food and cocaine while integrating neural imaging recordings. For complete details on the use and execution of this p

Two-photon in vivo microscopy of sulfonefluorescein secretion in normal and cystic rat kidneys.

The brain shapes spinal cord function throughout life. Operant conditioning of the H-reflex, the electrical analog of the spinal stretch reflex (SSR), is a relatively simple model for exploring the spinal cord plasticity underlying this functional change and may provide a new method for modifying spinal cord reflexes after spinal cord injury. In response to an operant conditioning protocol, rats can gradually increase (i.e., up-training mode) or decrease (i.e., down-training mode) the soleus H-reflex. This study explored the effects of midthoracic transection of the ipsilateral lateral column

The impact of social support cues on pain-related fear and avoidance learning.

Recently, social support cues have been suggested to be "unique" safety signals possessing fear inhibitory properties. Yet, previous research only included autonomic fear measures (i.e., skin conductance) in passive fear conditioning procedures, therefore the impact of social support cues on operant pain-related avoidance learning and self-reported fear and pain-expectancy is unknown. In contrast, previous research showed that social threat cues facilitate pain-related fear learning, but their impact on operant pain-avoidance learning has never been investigated. Pain-free participants (N = 81

Cognitive-behavioral and operant-behavioral therapy for people with fibromyalgia.

The current article reviews the cognitive-behavioral (CB) and operant-behavioral perspectives on chronic pain and suggests an answer to the question why changes in behaviors, attitudes, and emotions are associated with decreases in pain severity and impact discussing potential psychobiological mechanisms that may underlie cognitive and behavioral techniques. The impact of learning such as classical and operant conditioning in behaviors and physical responses including baroreflex sensitivity (BRS), as well as the influence of cognitions on pain perception and impact will be presented to explain

Sensorimotor cortex ablation prevents H-reflex up-conditioning and causes a paradoxical response to down-conditioning in rats.

Operant conditioning of the H-reflex, a simple model for skill acquisition, requires the corticospinal tract (CST) and does not require other major descending pathways. To further explore its mechanisms, we assessed the effects of ablating contralateral sensorimotor cortex (cSMC). In 22 Sprague-Dawley rats, the hindlimb area of left cSMC was ablated. EMG electrodes were implanted in the right soleus muscle and a stimulating cuff was placed around the right posterior tibial nerve. When EMG remained in a specified range, nerve stimulation just above the M response threshold elicited the H-reflex

SOME PHARMACOLOGICAL EFFECTS OF A SERIES OF TRYPTAMINE DERIVATIVES.

The methods of synthesis and some pharmacological properties of a number of N-substituted tryptamines are described. Peripheral vasopressor activity decreased with increase in complexity of the substituent and was not related to toxicity or to behavioural activity. Activity in increasing the rectal temperature of rabbits appeared to parallel modifications in the open-field behaviour of rats. Some compounds were investigated for their ability to block a conditioned avoidance-response in rats and to affect operant conditioning in cats. Evidence is presented which suggests that the tryptamine der

The NeuroHab: A Low-Cost, Integrated System for Investigation of Neural Correlates of Behaviors.

UNLABELLED: The development of a new integrated operant system was driven by two challenges in behavioral neuroscience: the high cost and technical complexity of commercial rigs, and their limited adaptability across experiments. We developed the NeuroHab, an integrated behavioral arena for high-fidelity operant conditioning and automated data collection in a single unified system. Food and water reward, conditioned-stimulus presentation, and event recording are tied together programmatically with easy-to-install open-source code to facilitate throughput and reproducibility. Adenosine A2A receptor activation in the nucleus accumbens decreases motivation for wheel running in male mice.

RATIONALE: Wheel running is a highly motivated behavior in rodents and is often used as a natural reinforcer. The adenosine A2A receptor is abundantly expressed in the nucleus accumbens (NAc) and plays a key role in the regulation of motivation and reward-related behaviors. However, its involvement in motivation for wheel running remains unclear. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to investigate how systemic and intra-NAc pharmacological manipulation of A2A receptors affects motivation for wheel running in mice. METHODS: We examined the effects of systemic administration of the A2A receptor antago

Medial nucleus accumbens dopamine receptors modulate motivation for wheel running in male mice.

Abnormal motivation for natural rewards is a hallmark of various psychiatric disorders, including behavioral addiction. The mesolimbic dopamine pathway has been identified as a critical modulator of motivated behavior primarily based on studies using food-reinforced operant tasks. However, the focus on food rewards in previous studies limits the generalizability of these findings to other natural rewards implicated in behavioral addiction. In this study, we investigated the reinforcing and high motivational properties of wheel running in rodents by developing a wheel running-reinforced operant

Long-term restorative effects of bromocriptine on operant responding in the 6-hydroxydopamine-lesioned rat.

Despite recent recognition of the complexity of the motor and nonmotor dysfunctions that manifest in Parkinson's disease, the propensity of drugs to alleviate the dopamine-dependent symptoms in the 6-hydroxydopamine rat model is still typically being assessed using relatively simple measures of motor function. We investigated the ability of the D2 agonist, bromocriptine, to ameliorate impairments in a more complex operant task, which simultaneously assessed both motor and nonmotor deficits. Rats were trained on a lateralized choice reaction time task that has previously been found to be sensit

H-reflex up-conditioning encourages recovery of EMG activity and H-reflexes after sciatic nerve transection and repair in rats.

Operant conditioning of the spinal stretch reflex or its electrical analog, the H-reflex, produces spinal cord plasticity and can thereby affect motoneuron responses to primary afferent input. To explore whether this conditioning can affect the functional outcome after peripheral nerve injury, we assessed the effect of up-conditioning soleus (SOL) H-reflex on SOL and tibialis anterior (TA) function after sciatic nerve transection and repair. Sprague Dawley rats were implanted with EMG electrodes in SOL and TA and stimulating cuffs on the posterior tibial nerve. After control data collection, t

Persistence of Operant Responding for Food After Prior Cocaine Exposure in Fischer 344 But Not Lewis Rats.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Chronic cocaine exposure has differential neural effects in Fischer 344 (F344) vs Lewis inbred rats that may explain strain-dependent differences during acquisition vs maintenance of cocaine self-administration. We assessed whether prior cocaine exposure alters operant responding for food across various phases (acquisition, maintenance, extinction, spontaneous recovery, reinitiation) in these strains. METHODS: Lewis and F344 rats (N = 12) were administered three cocaine (15 mg/kg) or saline injections at hourly intervals for 3 consecutive days. Beginning the next da
