Effect of prisms on visual acuity, contrast sensitivity and nystagmus in patients with albinism.

AIM: To investigate the effect of using base-out prisms on nystagmus, visual acuity and contrast sensitivity in patients with albinism. METHODS: In this interventional study, patients with albinism who had nystagmus were enrolled. A comprehensive eye exam was conducted, which included refraction, assessment of far and near vision acuity, and contrast sensitivity measurements. To check for the nystagmus, a videonystagmography was used. The tests were carried out in three modes: without any correction, with optical correction, and with correction using base-out prisms in three different powers,

Standard Amblyopia Therapy in Adults with Longstanding Amblyopia Improves Visual Acuity and Contrast Sensitivity.

PURPOSE: Perceptual learning or dichoptic training may result in improved acuity in adult amblyopes. However, for amblyopic children (<18 years), most clinicians recommend standard part-time patching. The purpose of this study was to determine if standard amblyopia therapy results in an enhancement in vision in the amblyopic eye of adults. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Fifteen amblyopes (20/30 or worse) were recruited and nine (age (SD) 32.9 (16.31)) with anisometropia or anisometropia and strabismus (ie, combined mechanism amblyopia) completed the study. Previous therapy did not exclude subjects. Th

Low-level processing deficits underlying poor contrast sensitivity for moving plaids in anisometropic amblyopia.

Many studies using random dot kinematograms have indicated a global motion processing deficit originated from extrastriate cortex, specifically middle temporal area (MT) and media superior temporal area (MST), in patients with amblyopia. However, the nature of this deficit remains unclear. To explore whether the ability of motion integration is impaired in amblyopia, contrast sensitivity for moving plaids and their corresponding component gratings were measured over a range of stimulus durations and spatial and temporal frequencies in 10 control subjects and 13 anisometropic amblyopes by using

Spatial visual contrast sensitivity in liver transplanted Portuguese familial amyloidotic polyneuropathy (ATTR V30M) patients.

Liver transplanted patients with familial amyloidosis (FAP) patients develop earlier presbyopia due to the deposition of amyloid on the anterior capsule of the lens. Despite normal visual acuity of 20/20 Snellen chart, some patients reported complaints of impaired vision. The aim of this study is to investigate the visual spatial contrast sensitivity in these patients. This is a retrospective, nonrandomized study. Spatial contrast sensitivity was performed in both eyes of 25 FAP patients with best correct visual acuity of 20/20 Snellen chart. In each patient, one eye had visible opacification

Treated amblyopes remain deficient in spatial vision: a contrast sensitivity and external noise study.

To evaluate residual spatial vision deficits in treated amblyopia, we recruited five clinically treated amblyopes (mean age=10.6 years). Contrast sensitivity functions (CSF) in both the previously amblyopic eyes (pAE; visual acuity=0.944+/-0.019 MAR) and fellow eyes (pFE; visual acuity=0.936+/-0.021 MAR) were measured using a standard psychophysical procedure for all the subjects. The results indicated that the treated amblyopes remained deficient in spatial vision, especially at high spatial frequencies, although their Snellen visual acuity had become normal in the pAEs. To identify the mecha

Impact of contrast sensitivity performance on visually presented neurobehavioral tests in mercury-exposed children.

Presentation of neuropsychological tests on a computer screen may involve a visual challenge to the examinee. The possible need for adjustment for visual contrast sensitivity on test performance was therefore determined from data on 917 mercury-exposed children who were examined at age 7 years. Contrast sensitivity was found to be associated with performance on the computer-assisted Continuous Performance Test. However, it showed similar associations with performance on traditional pencil-and-paper tests, especially Bender Visual Motor Gestalt Test and Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-

Does occupational exposure to argon laser radiation decrease colour contrast sensitivity in UK ophthalmologists?

The objects of the study were to determine: (1) whether United Kingdom ophthalmologists who used argon lasers had the elevation of colour-contrast thresholds previously discovered and (2) whether other users of argon lasers showed any unusual loss of colour vision. A total of 1072 UK ophthalmologists filled in a questionnaire about their professional use of lasers, the length of time spent operating, and their out-of-doors activities. Their colour vision was then tested by a new sensitive system, and if any abnormality was detected, a clinical eye examination was performed. The results were as

Effects of moderate dose alcohol on visual contrast sensitivity for stationary and moving targets.

OBJECTIVE: Contrast sensitivity involves distinguishing threshold luminance differences and is usually assessed using static sine-wave gratings over a range of different spatial frequencies. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of various levels of acute alcohol intoxication on contrast sensitivity to stationary and moving sine-wave gratings. Moving gratings required the subjects to make pursuit eye movements. A secondary goal was to investigate whether any alcohol-related effects were associated with any measures of intoxication. METHOD: Male volunteers (N = 8) participated

Color vision and contrast sensitivity tests in early diagnosis of primary open-angle glaucoma.

Color vision was examined by the Farnsworth 100 hue test in 48 eyes with ocular hypertension (OHT). Thirteen eyes had a general loss of color discrimination and 8 had a blue-yellow axis. Spatial contrast sensitivity was tested in 31 eyes with OHT by the Mentor B-VAT and was reduced in 8 of them. Temporal contrast sensitivity was explored in 40 eyes with OHT by the Flickersyst&m and showed abnormal responses in 11 eyes. According to the lack of specificity of the responses and the overlapping of the results of normal eyes and OHT eyes, those tests are not useful for classifying an individual pa
