Protecting-Group-Controlled Radical Cascade to Quaternary α,β'-Diamino Ketones.

The 1,4-diamino-2-hydroxy motif found in HIV protease inhibitors motivates efficient access to quaternary α,β'-diamino ketones, yet classical C-N bond formation at the α- and β'-positions requires nitrogen sources of opposite polarity, a fundamental mismatch that forces stepwise synthesis. Here we report a protecting-group-controlled radical cascade that overcomes this polarity mismatch in a single operation. Under dirhodium(II) catalysis, N-fluorobenzenesulfonimide (NFSI) serves as a unified nitrogen source to generate an aminyl radical, which initiates a 1,2-carbon shift to a transient oxoca

Frequency of mesenteric panniculitis in an oncologic population: A multicenter comparative study with a control group.

INTRODUCTION: Mesenteric panniculitis is a rare benign entity that affects the mesentery, often detected incidentally in an imaging examination. Its association with cancer is a controversial topic. The objective of the study was to determine the frequency of this condition in a known oncological population and compare it with that of a control population. METHODS: Cross-sectional, retrospective study, comparative with a control group. Patients referred for PET/CT (Positron Emission Tomography/Computed Tomography) staging for recently diagnosed cancer, who had not been treated and had no hist

Patient Characteristics Associated With Group Prenatal Care Attendance in a Randomized Controlled Trial.

INTRODUCTION: Group prenatal care (GPNC) represents a promising alternative to individual prenatal care (IPNC) for better perinatal outcomes. Some studies suggest better perinatal outcomes with more GPNC sessions attended. The present study sought to examine patient characteristics associated with higher or lower GPNC session attendance. METHODS: We conducted a secondary analysis of data collected in a single-site randomized controlled trial comparing GPNC to IPNC, focusing solely on patients assigned to GPNC. The outcome of interest was GPNC session attendance. Predictors evaluated included

Effect of thoracic manipulation on neck pain in the mobility group: A randomized controlled trial.

Background and aimsThoracic spine manipulation (TSM) increases the thoracic spine's range of motion (ROM), effectively reducing pain intensity and disability in patients with mechanical neck pain. We aimed to determine the effect of TSM on neck pain intensity and functional impairment in patients classified under the "mobility" category in Childs' classification.MethodsIn this randomized controlled trial, patients with mechanical neck pain who met the inclusion criteria were randomly assigned to either the TSM (n = 21) or sham manipulation (n = 20) group. The primary outcomes were pain during

Effect of group virtual exercise on people with Parkinson's disease: A randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: For people with Parkinson's disease (PwPD), high-intensity exercise in individual or group format can improve function and quality of life (QoL). Individualized virtual exercise programs have been effective for people with PD, but the feasibility and impact of group exercise in the virtual format has not been investigated. PURPOSE: To compare the effect of individual and group virtual exercise on functional mobility and QoL for PwPD. METHODS: Twenty PwPD were randomized to individualized (n = 10) or group (n = 10) virtual exercise 2 times per week for 8 weeks. Exercises were mult

Hydrogel Based on Polyhydroxyalkanoate Sulfonate: Control of the Swelling Rate by the Ionic Group Content.

Hydrogels based on poly(3-hydroxyalkanoate) (PHA) sulfonate and poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate, PEGDA, are prepared. First, PHA sulfonate is synthesized from unsaturated PHA by a thiol-ene reaction in the presence of sodium-3-mercapto-1-ethanesulfonate. The hydrophilicity of PHAs is considerably increased by adding sulfonate functions, and three amphiphilic PHAs are synthesized, containing 10, 22, or 29% sulfonate functions. Then, hydrogels are formed in the presence of PEGDA having different molar masses, that is, 575 or 2000 g mol-1. The hydrogels show fibrillar and porous structures obser

Children's Oncology Group's 2023 blueprint for research: Cancer control and supportive care.

The objective of the Cancer Control and Supportive Care (CCL) Committee in the Children's Oncology Group (COG) is to reduce the overall morbidity and mortality of therapy-related toxicities in children, adolescents, and young adults with cancer. We have targeted five major domains that cause clinically important toxicity: (i) infections and inflammation; (ii) malnutrition and metabolic dysfunction; (iii) chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting; (iv) neuro- and oto-toxicty; and (v) patient-reported outcomes and health-related quality of life. Subcommittees for each domain prioritize randomized

An examination of social group memberships in patients with eating disorders, carers, and healthy controls.

This study compared the quantity and quality of social group memberships in patients with anorexia nervosa (n = 30), carers of patients with anorexia nervosa, unrelated to those patients (n = 30), and two cohorts of healthy controls (n = 60) age-matched to these focal groups. A secondary aim was to examine the associations between the quality of group relationships and severity of eating disorder and depression symptoms in patients; and depression symptoms in carers. Participants completed the online Social Identity Mapping Tool, which was used to measure the quantity and quality of social gro

Oxytocin-enhanced group therapy for methamphetamine use disorder: Randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Methamphetamine (METH) use is a public health crisis that disproportionately affects men who have sex with men (MSM). There are currently no FDA-approved pharmacological interventions to treat methamphetamine use disorder (MUD). MUD is associated with social impairments and extremely high treatment attrition rates. Administration of oxytocin, a neuropeptide involved in social attachment, may be a novel approach to addressing these issues. Moreover, oxytocin administration has shown promise for reducing METH-related addictive behavior in animal models, but has not yet been investiga

Controlling the Reactivity of the Boronyl Group in Platinum Complexes toward Cyclodimerization: A Theoretical Survey.

A theoretical study of the cyclodimerization of (Cy3P)2Pt(BO)Br (1Br) and [(Cy3P)2Pt(BO)](+) (1) (Cy = cyclohexyl) suggests that the reactivity of the BO ligand is primarily controlled by M←BO σ donation. Therefore, increasing the electron density at the metal center through strong σ-donor and weak π-acceptor ancillary ligands and a low formal metal oxidation state are suggested to reduce the polarity of the boronyl ligand and thus lower its reactivity toward cyclodimerization. The stable 1Br has lower Pt←BO σ donation and thus a less electrophilic boron atom, leading to a less polarized BO li

Cognitive profile of patients with rotated drawing at copy or recall: a controlled group study.

When copying or recalling a figure from memory, some patient with dementia or focal brain lesions may rotate the drawing through ±90° or 180°. We have tried to clarify the nature of this phenomenon by investigating the cognitive profile of 22 patients who rotated the copy of the Rey-Osterrieth Complex Figure and 27 who rotated (only) the recall, and two control groups of cases with the same neuropsychiatric diagnoses, but no misorientation deficit. Brain MRI and FDG-PET images were also analysed. Predictor of rotation at the copy versus rotation at the recall was visuospatial impairment as mea

A randomized controlled trial on the effectiveness of a rumination-focused group treatment for residual depression.

The maintenance of residual symptoms following acute treatment is common and is associated with poor long-term prognosis. This study investigates whether a cognitive-behavioral group treatment is effective in reducing residual depression by targeting depressive rumination. Participants (N=60) were randomly assigned to either the group treatment or a wait-list control condition. Treatment significantly improved depressed mood, rumination, perceived control over rumination and dysfunctional metacognitive beliefs compared with the wait condition. Treatment gains were maintained over the follow-up

Pathological gamblers and a non-psychiatric control group taking gender differences into account.

The current study aimed to identify personality traits, emotional states and adjustment variables in a sample of pathological gamblers as compared to a non-gambling control group taking gender differences into account. The sample for this study consisted of 206 subjects (103 pathological gamblers and 103 non-psychiatric subjects from the general population matched for age and gender). Pathological gamblers had a lower educational level and a family history of alcohol abuse higher than non-gamblers. In turn, female gamblers were affected by unemployment and a lower socioeconomic status more oft

Curvature analysis of femoral shaft in total knee arthroplasty patient and control group.

For some patients with joint illnesses such as rheumarthritis or varus deformity, the total knee arthroplasty (TKA) procedures are performed. However, when inserting metal cutting guide for the procedures, due to the femoral shaft bowing, complications such as the cortex of the femoral shaft damages or secondary fractures can be caused. If the central coordinate value of the femoral shaft is known, the metal cutting guide could be inserted into the anatomical center, so such complications can be prevented. In this study, CT images of femoral shafts of 10 individuals in the experiment group who

A comparative study of celiac disease in children with migraine headache and a normal control group.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Migraine headache is one of the most frequent types of headache in children in which multiple factors, including environmental and genetic, are involved. Celiac disease is an autoimmune-mediated disease with intolerance to gluten. The clinical spectrum of celiac disease is wide. Patients may present with malabsorption symptoms or extra-intestinal involvement, or can be totally asymptomatic. The association of migraine headache and celiac disease is not well known. The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of celiac disease in children with migraine headache, in order

Multidisciplinary patient education in groups increases knowledge on osteoporosis: a randomized controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Specific pharmacological treatment reduces the incidence of fractures significantly in patients with osteoporosis. Unfortunately, compliance with such therapy is low in clinical practice and is inversely related to educational level. We hypothesized that patients' knowledge of osteoporosis may be increased by a group-based multidisciplinary education programme. METHODS: Three hundred patients, aged 45-81 years, recently diagnosed with osteoporosis and started on specific treatment, were randomized to either the "school'' or "control'' group. Teaching was performed by nurses, phy
