Convalescent plasma may be a possible treatment for COVID-19: A systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has spread globally. Therapeutic options including antivirals, anti-inflammatory compounds, and vaccines are still under study. Convalescent plasma(CP) immunotherapy was an effective method for fighting against similar viral infections such as SARS-CoV, and MERS-CoV. In the epidemic of COVID-19, a large number of literatures reported the application of CP. However, there is controversy over the efficacy of CP therapy for COVID-19. This systematic review was designed to evaluate the existing evidence and experience related to CP imm

Convalescent plasma-mediated resolution of COVID-19 in a patient with humoral immunodeficiency.

Convalescent plasma (CP) is widely used to treat COVID-19, but without formal evidence of efficacy. Here, we report the beneficial effects of CP in a severely ill COVID-19 patient with prolonged pneumonia and advanced chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), who was unable to generate an antiviral antibody response of her own. On day 33 after becoming symptomatic, the patient received CP containing high-titer (ID50 > 5,000) neutralizing antibodies (NAbs), defervesced, and improved clinically within 48 h and was discharged on day 37. Hence, when present in sufficient quantities, NAbs to SARS-CoV-2 h

The Disillusioned Comfort with COVID-19 and the Potential of Convalescent Plasma and Cell Therapy.

Coronavirus disease 2019 or COVID-19 is highly infectious, which can lead to acute and chronic debilitating symptoms, as well as mortality. The advent of safe and effective vaccines or antiviral drugs remains distant in the future. Practical public health measures, such as social distancing, hand washing, and wearing a face mask, are the current recommended guidelines by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for limiting the spread of the virus. Weakened immune system and aberrant inflammation represent a major pathological symptom of COVID-19 patients. Based on the unique immunomodul

Convalescent Rehabilitation for an Elderly Patient with Giant Cell Myocarditis: Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Giant cell myocarditis (GCM) is a rare inflammatory heart disease that, left untreated, rapidly progresses and is fatal without transplantation. Most patients with GCM die of congestive heart failure, but some survive for long periods, often after receiving immunosuppressive therapy. Although rehabilitation is crucial for improving activities of daily living (ADL) after discharge, no reports are available on the rehabilitation of patients with GCM. Here, we report the case of an elderly patient with GCM who was hospitalized for rehabilitation in the recovery phase. CASE: The patie

Detection, characterization, and enrollment of donors of Ebola convalescent plasma in Sierra Leone.

BACKGROUND: Passive therapy with convalescent plasma provides an early opportunity to intervene in Ebola virus disease (EVD). Methods for field screening and selection of potential donors and quantifying plasma antibody are needed. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: Recombinant Ebola virus glycoprotein (EBOV GP) was formatted into immunoglobulin G-capture, competitive, and double-antigen bridging enzyme immunoassays (EIAs). EVD survivors in Freetown, Sierra Leone, were recruited as potential plasma donors and assessed locally using sera alone and/or paired sera and oral fluids (ORFs). Uninfected contr

Cardiac Myosin Epitopes Recognized by Autoantibody in Acute and Convalescent Rheumatic Fever.

BACKGROUND: Acute rheumatic fever (ARF) is an autoimmune disorder associated with Streptococcus pyogenes infection. A prevailing hypothesis to account for this disease is that epitopes of self-antigens, such as cardiac myosin react to antibodies against S. pyogenes. The goal of our study was to confirm disease epitopes of cardiac myosin, identify immunodominant epitopes and to monitor the epitope response pattern in acute and convalescent rheumatic fever. METHODS: Enzyme-linked immunosorbant assays were used to determine epitopes immunodominant in acute disease and to track the immune respons

Uveitis and Systemic Inflammatory Markers in Convalescent Phase of Ebola Virus Disease.

We report a case of probable Zaire Ebola virus-related ophthalmologic complications in a physician from the United States who contracted Ebola virus disease in Liberia. Uveitis, immune activation, and nonspecific increase in antibody titers developed during convalescence. This case highlights immune phenomena that could complicate management of Ebola virus disease-related uveitis during convalescence.

Convalescent phase outpatient parenteral antiinfective therapy for children with complicated appendicitis.

BACKGROUND: Children with a perforated or gangrenous appendix become clinically stable after medical and/or surgical therapy but often remain in the hospital solely to complete parenteral antibiotic therapy. This prospective study investigates the outcomes when children who meet specified criteria are discharged to complete parenteral antibiotic therapy at home. METHODS: Children age 1 to 17 years with appendicitis complicated by generalized peritonitis or intraabdominal abscess were eligible to participate. Subjects whose fever was decreasing, who were able to tolerate oral liquids and for w

Kinetics of humoral response during the acute and the convalescent phase of human trichinosis.

After a common source outbreak of trichinosis in Bitburg, FRG, 107 patients, for whom time and source of infection were precisely known, were prospectively studied for a period of eight months in order to investigate the kinetics of the humoral immune response. Antibodies were assessed by IHA, and by ELISA to quantify IgG, IgM and IgE isotypes. For four different periods of the observation time sensitivity and predictive value of tests to identify acute or convalescent trichinosis were determined. The results demonstrated characteristic kinetics of the different antibody isotypes and varying d

[Steps in the recovery from severe depression. On the psychosomatic aspects of a convalescent process].

In retrospect, several phases of the healing process are easily distinguishable: Initiated with a terminal inpatient antidepressant therapy, continued by a tranquilizer-hypnotic withdrawal treatment, the psychotherapeutic mastering of the life-crises which provoked the mental disturbance in the first place, then the patient's going back to work, and, finally, the total mental stabilization on a mature level. The psychopathologic and psychosomatic symptoms appearing in the process are interpreted as expressions of spontaneous healing and not to be confounded with symptoms of withdrawal and/or r

Histopathological findings of acute and convalescent myocarditis obtained by serial endomyocardial biopsy.

Serial endomyocardial biopsy findings in 20 cases with acute myocarditis of possible viral origin were analyzed. The histopathological findings were analyzed during the acute (0-10 days after the onset: 8.3 +/- 1.9 days; 6 cases), the subacute (11-21 days: 18.2 +/- 2.2 days, 6 cases), and the convalescent stages (22-167 days: 54.5 +/- 45.4 days; 8 cases). The incidence and severity of various changes of the cardiac myocytes and interstitial changes were analyzed and compared at each stage of the disease. In the acute stage, interstitial cell infiltrations were composed of fibroblasts, macropha

Specific mode acupoint electrical stimulation combined with NGF for neurological recovery in ischemic stroke convalescence: A randomized controlled study.

BACKGROUND: Nerve growth factor (NGF) has neurorestorative potential after ischemic stroke, but its efficacy may be limited by the blood-brain barrier (BBB). Preclinical studies suggested that specific mode acupoint electrical stimulation (SMES) may transiently increase BBB permeability and facilitate neurotrophic factor delivery. This study evaluated the efficacy and safety of SMES combined with NGF in ischemic stroke and explored treatment-associated functional brain changes. METHODS: In this multicentre, randomized, placebo-controlled trial, adults aged 30-80 years with first-ever ischemic
