Family functioning, neurocognitive functioning, and behavior problems in children with sickle cell disease.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the independent and combined contributions of neurocognitive and family functioning to mother-reported behavior problems in children with sickle cell disease (SCD) and evaluate the factor structure of the Family Environment Scale (FES) with African American families. METHOD: The study sample included 289 children enrolled in the multisite Cooperative Study of Sickle Cell Disease. The study protocol included neuropsychological evaluation and brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the children, and mothers completed the Child Behavior Checklist and Family Environmen

The effects of physical abuse on children's social relationships.

Social behavior and peer status of 87 physically abused 8-12-year-old urban children were compared with those of 87 case-matched nonmaltreated classmates. Peer nominations and peer ratings were collected in classrooms, social networks were assessed by child interview, family variables were assessed by interviewing mothers, and behavior problems were rated by parents and teachers. Significant findings were that abused children had lower peer status and less positive reciprocity with peers chosen as friends; they were rated by peers as more aggressive and less cooperative and by parents and teac

Coordinated punishment of defectors sustains cooperation and can proliferate when rare.

Because mutually beneficial cooperation may unravel unless most members of a group contribute, people often gang up on free-riders, punishing them when this is cost-effective in sustaining cooperation. In contrast, current models of the evolution of cooperation assume that punishment is uncoordinated and unconditional. These models have difficulty explaining the evolutionary emergence of punishment because rare unconditional punishers bear substantial costs and hence are eliminated. Moreover, in human behavioral experiments in which punishment is uncoordinated, the sum of costs to punishers an

Narcissistic and dependent traits and behavior in four archetypal 2-person, 2-choice games.

INTRODUCTION: The characteristic behaviors we use to define personality pathology arise from specific interpersonal interactions. In an effort to create a laboratory-based context in which behavior might be expected to be influenced by particular personality traits, we used four 2-person, 2-choice games (the Prisoner's Dilemma, Chicken, Leader, and Hero games) to create a simulated interaction and focused specifically on narcissism and dependency. METHOD: An online sample of 1137 (35% male, M age = 38.46 years, SD age = 13.20) participants completed brief, self-reported measures of trait narc

Cardiopulmonary parameters during meperidine, promethazine, and chlorpromazine sedation for pediatric dentistry.

Twenty pediatric patients were sedated with a meperidine, Promethazine and chlorpromazine drug combination prior to dental rehabilitation. Heart rate, blood pressure, and oxygen saturation were recorded throughout the procedures, as well as level of patient cooperation. There were no statistically significant changes in either heart rate or blood pressure. Forty-seven percent of subjects treated experienced a decline in oxygen hemoglobin saturation. Fifty percent of the patients were well sedated and cooperative, with another forty-five precent exhibiting moderate sedation but an increased inc

Influences of Vehicle Communication on Human Driving Reactions: A Simulator Study on Reaction Times and Behavior for Forensic Accident Analysis.

Cooperative intelligent transport systems (C-ITSs) are mass-produced and sold in Europe, promising enhanced safety and comfort. Direct vehicle communication, known as vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communication, is crucial in this context. Drivers receive warnings about potential hazards by exchanging vehicle status and environmental data with other communication-enabled vehicles. However, the impact of these warnings on drivers and their inclusion in accident reconstruction remains uncertain. Unlike sensor-based warnings, V2X warnings may not provide a visible reason for the alert, potentially

Free-Rider Games for Cooperative Spectrum Sensing and Access in CIoT Networks.

With the rapid development of technologies such as wireless communications and the Internet of Things (IoT), the proliferation of IoT devices will intensify the competition for spectrum resources. The introduction of cognitive radio technology in IoT can minimize the shortage of spectrum resources. However, the open environment of cognitive IoT may involve free-riding problems. Due to the selfishness of the participants, there are usually a large number of free-riders in the system who opportunistically gain more rewards by stealing the spectrum sensing results from other participants and acce

The development of cooperation and cooperative norm enforcement in children and adolescents: The role of in-group favoritism.

Various scholars have discussed the influence of group membership on cooperative behaviors in adult samples. Nonetheless, the developmental trajectories of related biases from middle childhood and early adolescence remain to be explored. Using the one-shot 4-player public goods game and inducing group membership awareness by school affiliation, we investigated the effects of group membership of imaginary partners on cooperation (Experiment 1) and cooperative norm enforcement (Experiment 2) in children and adolescents across fourth (N = 106, Mage = 9.53 years, 57 girls), sixth (N = 109, Mage =

Reciprocity: weak or strong? What punishment experiments do (and do not) demonstrate.

Economists and biologists have proposed a distinction between two mechanisms--"strong" and "weak" reciprocity--that may explain the evolution of human sociality. Weak reciprocity theorists emphasize the benefits of long-term cooperation and the use of low-cost strategies to deter free-riders. Strong reciprocity theorists, in contrast, claim that cooperation in social dilemma games can be sustained by costly punishment mechanisms, even in one-shot and finitely repeated games. To support this claim, they have generated a large body of evidence concerning the willingness of experimental subjects

Violent coalitionary attacks and intraspecific killing in wild white-faced capuchin monkeys ( Cebus capucinus).

During 12 years of observation, we have observed three confirmed and two inferred lethal coalitionary attacks on adult male white-faced capuchins ( Cebus capucinus) by members of two habituated social groups at Lomas Barbudal Biological Reserve, Costa Rica. In one case, an alpha male was badly wounded and evicted from his group, and when later found by his former groupmates he was attacked by several of them and died less than 24 h later. In two other cases, lone extra-group males were mobbed by adult and immature males of a bisexual group. One victim's abdomen was torn open and he died less t

Diagnostic conundrum of oppositional defiant disorder and conduct disorder.

Evidence for a diagnostic distinction of oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) and conduct disorder (CD) is reviewed, and alternative conceptualizations and definitions for the 4th edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders are considered. Studies suggest that CD and ODD are strongly and developmentally related but clearly different. Factor analyses indicate that distinct covarying groups of ODD and CD symptoms can be identified, but certain symptoms relate to both (particularly mild aggression and lying). Age of onset for ODD is earlier than for most CD symptoms. Nearl

Fostering collaborative creativity and ensemble skills through virtual ensembles in hybrid music education: A systematic literature review.

The sudden change of music education to a hybrid form during the COVID-19 pandemic has made virtual ensembles the primary way of learning together. The authors aim through this review to understand how much digital platforms such as JackTrip, Jamulus, Zoom, and Soundtrap have affected the student engagement in musical ensemble practice. The paper emphasizes virtually choreographed concerts not only as a method for being able to continue training when difficulties arise but also to develop creative cooperation, self-management, and more advanced group playing skills. Seventeen peer-reviewed art

Challenges and enablers of collaborative working in the voluntary, community, social, faith and enterprise sector: impact, effectiveness, and sustainability.

INTRODUCTION: Voluntary, Community, Social, and Faith Enterprise (VCSFE) organisations play a vital role in supporting local health and care needs, particularly among underserved communities. However, they can often operate in isolation, making it difficult for vulnerable populations to access coordinated support. Luton Public Health led a pilot called the Collaboration Fund that encouraged joint working among selected VCSFE organisations, delivering services that tackle health inequalities. The evaluation of the Collaboration Fund assessed the impact, effectiveness, and sustainability of this

How to Foster Challenging Interdisciplinary Collaborations: Can Philosophy Support Neuroscientists?

New conceptual and technological developments bring neuroscientists closer to other disciplines and other fields in neuroscience with different traditions. Although some neuroscientists may underrate the potential benefits of successful interdisciplinary collaborations, others may be unaware of the typical difficulties of such collaborations or are not trained in skills that render them fruitful. Here, we argue that interdisciplinary interactions have long been part of neuroscience, although they are often challenging, because neuroscientists may be confronted with concepts, assumptions, and i

AI is Here to Stay: A Scenario-Based Exploration of Leadership, Followership, and the Impact on Skill Development.

Emerging AI technologies are transforming work and redefining how leading and following unfold when humans collaborate with AI as tool, agent, teammate, and autonomous partner. This article uses an action-based organizational learning scenario technique to develop four future workplace constellations: (1) AI as collaborative tool, (2) AI as delegated agent, (3) AI as team member, and (4) AI as autonomous partner. For each, it examines implications for reversing the lens and co-creation leadership and followership, specifying the competence profiles and AI literacy needed for responsible human-

Cooperative spatial modelling of hospital compliance with minimum caseload requirements.

BACKGROUND: Minimum caseload requirements (MCRs) ensure medical treatment quality but may negatively affect spatial accessibility to health care. Previous studies optimised the caseload distribution via spatial models, with a focus on balancing spatial concentration and accessibility with centralised case redistribution models. This study seeks to capture hospitals as active participants in MCR policy decisions by incorporating their intentions and motivations regarding MCRs within their spatial context, considering current caseloads and neighbouring hospital distances. METHODS: The study mod

The role of general practitioners in German cancer care: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: General practitioners (GPs) play an important role in the care of patients with cancer across the entire cancer continuum, from diagnosis to palliative care. Despite their broad range of responsibilities, structures to facilitate the systematic involvement of GPs into cancer care remain insufficient in Germany. To date, the specific role and contribution of GPs within the German cancer care system have not been comprehensively synthesized. OBJECTIVE: This scoping review aimed to summarize the available evidence on GP involvement in cancer care in Germany, including their roles acr
