Reef corals in the Mexican Reef System have been severely affected by the emergence of a white syndrome that resembles both White Plague II and SCTLD descriptions. Meandroid scleractinian coral species are among the most severely affected. To gain insight into this affliction we conducted a broad study in the brain coral Pseudodiploria strigosa at a rear reef site in the NE Mexican Caribbean. We describe macro and microscopical signals of the disease, characterize the outbreak dynamics, the tissue histopathology, explore immunological responses in the individuals, and compare microbial assembl

Cilia-induced vortical flows are critical for regulating oxygen (O2) and metabolite exchange across coral-water interfaces. While this active ventilation affects the coral tissue microenvironment, its role in thermal stress remains poorly understood. Using high-speed imaging of cilia beating, particle image velocimetry with O2-sensitive nanoparticles, and a mechanistic transport model, we quantified how ciliary dynamics in the reef-building coral Porites lutea respond to acute warming in darkness. Moderate warming (~35°C) enhanced ciliary activity and advective transport yet paradoxically thic

Anthropogenic climate change is intensifying natural disturbance regimes, which negatively affects some species, while benefiting others. This could alter the trait composition of ecological communities and influence resilience to disturbance. We investigated how the frequency and intensification of the regional storm regime (and likely other disturbances) is altering coral species composition and in turn resistance and recovery. We developed regional databases of coral cover and composition (3144 reef locations from 1970 to 2017) and of the path and strength of cyclonic storms in the region (

Obligate endosymbioses between eukaryotes and their single-celled inhabitants form the basis of many ecosystems, yet little is known about the long-term impacts of climate change on them. On coral reefs, extensive studies have shown that climate change-driven heatwaves and other environmental stressors can disrupt the obligate symbiosis between reef-building corals and Symbiodiniaceae, with consequences for coral fitness and survival. However, despite coral symbioses playing a fundamental role in reef resilience to climate change, whether, and at what rate, they recover following heatwave disr

Coral reefs are hotspots of marine biodiversity, which results in the synthesis of a wide variety of compounds with unique molecular scaffolds, and bioactivities, rendering reefs an ecosystem of interest. The chemodiversity stems from the intricate relationships between inhabitants of the reef, as the chemistry produced partakes in intra- and interspecies communication, settlement, nutrient acquisition, and defense. However, the coral reefs are declining at an unprecedented rate due to climate change, pollution, and increased incidence of pathogenic diseases. Among pathogens, Vibrio spp. bacte

Studying hybridization is crucial to understanding speciation and almost all our knowledge comes from terrestrial and freshwater environments. Marine hybrids are considered rare, particularly on species-rich coral reefs. Here, we report a significant marine hybrid zone at Christmas and Cocos Islands (eastern Indian Ocean) with 11 hybrid coral reef fishes (across six families); the most recorded hybrids of any marine location. In most cases, at least one of the parent species is rare (less than three individuals per 3000 m(2)), suggesting that hybridization has occurred because individuals of t

BACKGROUND: Corals are increasingly threatened by global climate change, which may lead to shifts in their community on geographic scales. Reef-building corals are mixotrophic and may increase heterotrophy to bolster their resilience to environmental stress. However, many studies only focus on trophic strategies at the species or genus level, overlooking whether the change in these strategies may cause community shifts.
RESULTS: Prior to potential summer thermal events, we collected coral samples and classified them into different groups based on the shortest distance from the inner edge of t

Corals that naturally thrive under extreme conditions are gaining increasing attention due to their importance as living models to understand the impact of global warming on world corals. Here, we present the first metagenomic study of viral communities in corals thriving in a thermally variable water body in which the temperature fluctuates between 11 and 39°C in different seasons. The viral assemblages of two of the most abundant massive (Porites harrisoni) and branching (Acropora downingi) corals in offshore and inshore reef systems in the northern Arabian Gulf were investigated. Samples we

Over the past two decades, microbiome manipulations have emerged as a strategy to bolster coral fitness. Here, we provide a timeline of two decades of research on in vivo coral microbiome manipulation studies aimed at improving coral health. A summary of coral hosts, probiotic taxa, and how experimental design varies across studies is synthesized to identify commonly used taxa and research gaps. This review highlights methodological challenges and identifies opportunities to advance probiotic development and translate microbial interventions into practical tools for coral restoration and reef

Ciguatera fish poisoning (CFP) is known to be caused by the ciguatoxins from the dinoflagellate genus Gambierdiscus, however, there is the potential for other toxins such as okadaic acid and dinophysistoxins from the genus Prorocentrum, and palytoxin from the genus Ostreopsis, to contaminate seafood. These genera may also be indicators of ecosystem health and potentially impact on coral reef ecosystems and the role they may play in the succession of coral to macroalgae dominated reefs has not been researched. Growth anomalies (GAs) are a morphologically diverse and poorly understood group of lesions affecting corals. The aim of this study was to describe the prevalence and morphology of GAs affecting the faviid corals Diploria labyrinthiformis, Pseudodiploria strigosa, Psudodiploria clivosa, and Colpophyillia natans on St. Kitts. Three gross morphological variants of GAs (exophytic, nodular, and ruminate) were equally prevalent, together affecting 7.8% of corals surveyed across 5 reefs. Prevalence varied by reef and coral species, being highest in C. natans (35.7%). Median colony diameter was large

Terpios hoshinota, an encrusting cyanosponge, is known as a strong substrate competitor of reef-building corals that kills encountered coral by overgrowth. Terpios outbreaks cause significant declines in living coral cover in Indo-Pacific coral reefs, with the damage usually lasting for decades. Recent studies show that there are morphological transformations at a sponge's growth front when confronting corals. Whether these morphological transformations at coral contacts are involved with physiological outperformance (e.g., higher metabolic activity or nutritional status) over other portions o

Ciguatera is a common but underreported tropical disease caused by the consumption of coral reef fish contaminated by ciguatoxins. Gastrointestinal and neurological symptoms predominate, but may be accompanied by cardiovascular features such as hypotension and sinus bradycardia. Here, we report an unusual case of junctional bradycardia caused by ciguatera in the Caribbean; to our knowledge, the first such report from the region. An increase in global sea temperatures is predicted to lead to the spread of ciguatera beyond traditional endemic areas, and the globalisation of trade in coral reef f

BACKGROUND: Apicomplexans are the causative agents of major human diseases such as malaria and toxoplasmosis. A novel group of apicomplexans, recently named corallicolids, have been detected in corals inhabiting tropical shallow reefs. These apicomplexans may represent a transitional lifestyle between free-living phototrophs and obligate parasites. To shed light on the evolutionary history of apicomplexans and to investigate their ecology in association with corals, we screened scleractinians, antipatharians, alcyonaceans, and zoantharians from shallow, mesophotic, and deep-sea communities. We

The integrity of coral reefs worldwide is jeopardized by ocean acidification (OA). Most studies conducted so far have focused on the vulnerability to OA of corals inhabiting shallow reefs while nothing is currently known about the response of mesophotic scleractinian corals. In this study, we assessed the susceptibility to OA of corals, together with their algal partners, inhabiting a wide depth range. We exposed fragments of the depth generalist coral Stylophora pistillata collected from either 5 or 45 m to simulated future OA conditions, and assessed key molecular, physiological and photosyn

Reef-building corals thrive in oligotrophic environments due to their possession of endosymbiotic algae. Confined to the low pH interior of the symbiosome within the cell, the algal symbiont provides the coral host with photosynthetically fixed carbon. However, it remains unknown how carbon is released from the algal symbiont for uptake by the host. Here we show, using cultured symbiotic dinoflagellate, Breviolum sp., that decreases in pH directly accelerates the release of monosaccharides, that is, glucose and galactose, into the ambient environment. Under low pH conditions, the cell surface

Fish-associated microorganisms are known to be affected by the environment and other external factors, such as microbial transfer between interacting partners. One of the most iconic mutualistic interactions on coral reefs is the cleaning interactions between cleaner fishes and their clients, during which direct physical contact occurs. Here, we characterized the skin bacteria of the Caribbean cleaner sharknose goby, Elacatinus evelynae, in four coral reefs of the US Virgin Islands using sequencing of the V4 region of the 16S rRNA gene. We specifically tested the relationship between gobies' l

There are limited quantitative data available documenting the natural, or non-epizootic, occurrence of scleractinian coral diseases over multiple years. Individual coral colonies exhibiting black band disease (BBD), white plague (WP), dark spots syndrome (DSS), and white band disease (WBD) were monitored 3 times per year on 5 south Florida reefs over a 2 yr period. Surveys included measurements of coral population composition, coral diversity, disease type, coral species affected, colony size, percent of colony affected, and the number of lesions or active infections per colony. Coral skeletons host diverse microbial communities, including endolithic green algae that contribute to holobiont functioning. The siphonous green alga Ostreobium (Bryopsidales) is arguably the best-known coral endolith, but recent environmental sequencing has indicated that other lineages of green algae may also inhabit the coral skeleton, including members of the Cladophorales. Here, we characterize a new endolithic green alga isolated from a Porites coral skeleton collected from Heron Island on the southern Great Barrier Reef. The alga forms uniseriate, sparsely branched grass-green filamen
