Recovery from adolescent anorexia nervosa and associations with diurnal patterns of salivary stress hormones: a case report.

In the neurodevelopment of adolescent anorexia nervosa (AN), dysregulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis is proposed to be a central component. Furthermore, a therapeutic milieu focusing on affect regulation can contribute much to treatment, given the emotional processing difficulties associated with this disorder. Studies of HPA axis function following such specialist treatments for adolescent AN, however, are rare. This study describes the diurnal pattern of HPA axis activation, including the cortisol awakening response (CAR), in a 16-year-old female diagnosed with AN both

Diurnal salivary cortisol levels in postpartum mothers as a function of infant feeding choice and parity.

Daily stress and sleep deprivation can influence the diurnal pattern of cortisol, which normally consists of high morning levels and a gradual decline throughout the day. While most individuals have consistent declining cortisol concentrations over days, others display either flat or inconsistent profiles. Postpartum mothers experience considerable home demands and sleep deprivation, yet, breastfeeding mothers perceive lower stress and reduced negative mood states compared to bottlefeeders. On the other hand, multiparity (having more than one child) is associated with reduced steepness in diur

Psychobiological stress outcomes in mothers, fathers, and children after successful assisted reproduction.

AIMS/BACKGROUND: Breaking the cycle of infertility through assisted reproductive technology (ART) can be burdensome for couples, potentially impacting the family. Our study investigated long-term effects of infertility and ART stress on families by comparing families formed through ART with those formed through natural conception (NC). DESIGN/METHODS: Two-child families (children aged 1-14), with the first-born conceived through ART (ART-1; n = 47), the second-born conceived through ART (ART-2; n = 19), or both children conceived naturally (NC; n = 52), were assessed. Parents completed questi

Exposure to negative acts at work, psychological stress reactions and physiological stress response.

OBJECTIVES: The overall aim of the study was to test the association between exposure to negative acts at work, psychological stress-reactions and cortisol secretion and whether some negative acts are more detrimental to health than others. METHODS: A questionnaire study included 1010 respondents from 55 workplaces. Three saliva samples collected from the participants at awakening, 30 min later and at 20:00 during a workday were analysed for cortisol concentrations. Negative acts were measured using a modified version of the revised Negative Acts Questionnaire (to measure bullying behaviour).

The SMART Moms Program: A Randomized Trial of the Impact of Stress Management on Perceived Stress and Cortisol in Low-Income Pregnant Women.

BACKGROUND: Dysregulations in maternal hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal function and the end product, cortisol, have been associated with a heightened risk for stress-related health complications during pregnancy and post partum. Given the adverse health impact that maternal cortisol may have on expectant mothers and their infants, empirically-based prenatal interventions are needed to target optimal management of stress and its biological effects in at-risk pregnant women, a primary example of which is cognitive behavioral stress management (CBSM). This randomized-controlled trial examined the

Stress, mood, and cortisol during daily life in women with Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD).

Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD) is characterized by significant emotional, physical and behavioral distress during the late luteal phase that remits after menses onset. Outlined as a new diagnostic category in DSM-5, the mechanisms underlying PMDD are still insufficiently known. Previous research suggests that PMDD exacerbates with stressful events, indicating a dysregulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis. However, studies measuring stress-related processes in affected women in real-time and real-life are lacking. We conducted an Ambulatory Assessment (AA) study to compare

School commute time, chronotype, and altered HPA axis functioning during adolescence.

Hypothalamic pituitary adrenal gland (HPA) axis functioning has been linked with daily demands during adolescence. A ubiquitous, yet understudied daily demand in the lives of youth is the commute to school, which may be associated with the diurnal rhythm of cortisol as demonstrated in prior research among adults. The current study hypothesized that longer school commute times would be associated with altered HPA axis functioning as demonstrated by a heightened cortisol awakening response (CAR) and flatter diurnal slope. Additionally, given that the HPA axis follows a diurnal rhythm and adolesc

DNA methylation in former extremely low birth weight newborns: association with cardiovascular and endocrine function.

BACKGROUND: There is increased risk of cardiovascular, metabolic, and hypertensive disorders in later life in the preterm population. We studied school-age children who had been born extremely premature who had undergone endocrine, cardiovascular, and anthropometric evaluations. METHODS: School age measurements of salivary cortisol, adrenal androgens, blood pressure, and anthropometric markers were correlated with DNA methylation of 11-betahydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type 2 (11BHSD2), leptin, and the LINE1 repetitive DNA element. RESULTS: We observed a modest correlation between log AUC for

Sex differences in the relationship between prolactin levels and impaired processing speed in early psychosis.

INTRODUCTION: Hyperprolactinaemia is commonly observed in people with psychotic disorders due to D2 receptor blockade by antipsychotic drugs, although it may also exist in drug-naïve patients with first-episode psychosis. Recent studies suggest that hyperprolactinaemia may have a negative impact on cognitive function in people with early psychosis. We aimed to explore whether there are sex differences in the association between prolactin levels and cognitive performance in early psychosis patients. METHODS: We studied 60 young patients with early psychosis (aged 18-35 years, 35% females) and

An integrated approach to understand biological stress system dysregulation across depressive and anxiety disorders.

BACKGROUND: Affective disorders involve dysregulation of major biological stress systems (hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA)-axis, immune system, autonomic nervous system (ANS)). Suchdysregulationshave rarely beensimultaneously examined across different stress systems. METHODS: In the Netherlands Study of Depression and Anxiety (n=2789), we investigated whether current or remitted depressive and/or anxiety disorders (based on the CIDI semi-structured interview), including specific symptom profiles, were associated with separate markers and cumulative indexes of the HPA-axis (cortisol awaken

Effects of Subanesthetic Oromucosal Dexmedetomidine on Sleep in Humans: A Randomized, Controlled Pharmacokinetics-Pharmacodynamics Study.

BACKGROUND: The locus coeruleus noradrenergic system may provide a potential new target for pharmacologic insomnia treatment, particularly in patients suffering from elevated distress. The selective α 2 -noradrenergic agonist dexmedetomidine attenuates locus coeruleus activity in subanesthetic doses, yet no adequate nonparental delivery systems of dexmedetomidine are currently available. To examine the feasibility of oromucosal dexmedetomidine administration, the authors developed two distinct-one sublingual and one buccal-oromucosal, fast-disintegrating dexmedetomidine formulas tailored for s

Hormonal treatment reduces psychobiological distress in gender identity disorder, independently of the attachment style.

INTRODUCTION: Gender identity disorder may be a stressful situation. Hormonal treatment seemed to improve the general health as it reduces psychological and social distress. The attachment style seemed to regulate distress in insecure individuals as they are more exposed to hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal system dysregulation and subjective stress. AIM: The objectives of the study were to evaluate the presence of psychobiological distress and insecure attachment in transsexuals and to study their stress levels with reference to the hormonal treatment and the attachment pattern. METHODS: We in

Nightmares do result in psychophysiological arousal: A multimeasure ambulatory assessment study.

Individuals who frequently experience nightmares report compromised sleep quality, poor daytime mood, and functioning. Previous research has aimed at linking these impairments with altered sleep architecture, but results were inconclusive. One plausible explanation is that only a few studies recorded markers of autonomic nervous system activity. For the first time, this study collected such markers under ecologically valid conditions with ambulatory assessment. In 19 individuals with frequent nightmares (≥1 nightmare/week) and 19 healthy control participants (<1 nightmare/month), measures indi

The effect of a maternal history of childhood abuse on adrenocortical attunement in mothers and their toddlers.

We investigated circadian mother-child adrenocortical attunement in the context of a maternal history of childhood abuse (HoA). Mothers were screened after birth using the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire. Women reporting moderate or severe abuse formed the HoA group (n = 37; HoAG) and were compared with a non-maltreated comparison group (n = 45; CG). Three years later, cortisol awakening response (CAR) and diurnal slope (DSL) were assessed. Mother-child interaction was coded using the Emotional Availability Scales at 12 months of age. For the CAR, we found adrenocortical attunement only in the

Hormones, Stress, and Heart Disease in Transgender Women with HIV in LITE Plus.

INTRODUCTION: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a leading cause of death among transgender women and people with HIV. Exogenous estrogen and psychosocial stressors are known risk factors for CVD. Yet, few studies have used biomarkers to examine the role of stress in CVD risk among transgender women with HIV (TWHIV). This analysis examined whether stress moderates relationships between gender-affirming hormone therapy (GAHT) duration and CVD risk among TWHIV. METHODS: This cross-sectional analysis of baseline data from an observational cohort of 108 Black and Latina TWHIV in Boston, New York, an

Neurobiological correlates of antisociality across adolescence and young adulthood: a multi-sample, multi-method study.

BACKGROUND: Antisociality across adolescence and young adulthood puts individuals at high risk of developing a variety of problems. Prior research has linked antisociality to autonomic nervous system and endocrinological functioning. However, there is large heterogeneity in antisocial behaviors, and these neurobiological measures are rarely studied conjointly, limited to small specific studies with narrow age ranges, and yield mixed findings due to the type of behavior examined. METHODS: We harmonized data from 1489 participants (9-27 years, 67% male), from six heterogeneous samples. In the r
