Wildlife are hosts of ectoparasites, such as fleas and ticks that may transmit human and animal pathogens. Little is known about the ecology of many ectoparasite species native to southern Texas, or their role in pathogen maintenance and transmission. Much attention has been given to the role of nonnative nilgai antelope as cattle fever tick hosts and agents of dispersal, but little attention has been given to other ectoparasites that may utilize nilgai antelope as hosts. As southern Texas is a hot-spot for flea-borne (murine) typhus, it is important to examine flea species presence, abundance

The purpose of this study was to determine the serological and molecular prevalence of Bartonella spp. infection in a sick dog population from Brazil. At the São Paulo State University Veterinary Teaching Hospital in Botucatu, 198 consecutive dogs with clinicopathological abnormalities consistent with tick-borne infections were sampled. Antibodies to Bartonella henselae and Bartonella vinsonii subsp. berkhoffii were detected in 2.0% (4/197) and 1.5% (3/197) of the dogs, respectively. Using 16S-23S rRNA intergenic transcribed spacer (ITS) primers, Bartonella DNA was amplified from only 1/198 bl

Coxiella burnetii, the etiologic agent of Q fever, is a worldwide zoonotic pathogen. Although Q fever is present in the United States, little is known about its current incidence or geographic distribution in either humans or animals. Published reports of national disease surveillance, individual cases, outbreak investigations, and serologic surveys were reviewed to better characterize Q fever epidemiology in the United States. In national disease surveillance reports for 1948-1986, 1,396 human cases were reported from almost every state. Among published individual case reports and outbreak in

Co-infections involving Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae (APP) and influenza A (H1N1) virus present a serious diagnostic challenge in swine respiratory disease, complicating effective outbreak management and control. This study reports the development and validation of a novel duplex TaqMan real-time PCR assay, optimized for the Coyote Flash10 portable automated detection system, for the simultaneous identification and quantification of both pathogens. The assay employs primers and probes specific to the apxIVA virulence gene of APP and the conserved matrix (M) gene of H1N1, with porcine RNase

Elucidating the fundamental neural mechanisms of hippocampal information processing is necessary for understanding memory formation and related brain disorders. Differences in hippocampal genetics, anatomy, and connectivity across the longitudinal axis suggest functional heterogeneity in this structure. The dorsal pole is suggested to be primarily involved in spatial processing, whereas the ventral pole is implicated in emotional processing. Connectivity and genetic studies show this functional segregation is more prominent near their respective poles and weaker toward the intermediate region.

Hepatozoon spp. are common pathogens in dogs and other Carnivora in many parts of the world, especially in the tropics. There is considerable taxonomic debate concerning the Hepatozoon species infecting Carnivora. Morphological descriptions of several Hepatozoon species are inadequate and their validity is questionable. Additionally, different terminology has been used for the description of life cycle stages. Here, we provide a comprehensive review of the Hepatozoon species in the Carnivora, using a uniform terminology. Worldwide prevalence of clinical and subclinical Hepatozoon infections fo

The prevalence and diversity of parasitic nematodes in wildlife have been well studied for certain species, yet for others considerable gaps in knowledge exist. The parasitic nematode Dracunculus insignis infects North American wildlife, and past research on this species has led to an increased understanding of the potential host diversity and transmission of the closely related human Guinea worm, Dracunculus medinensis (which is currently the focus of a global eradication program). Many definitive hosts have been documented for D. insignis; however, the life cycle has been studied only in lab

The acanthocephalan Macracanthorhynchus ingens (von Linstow 1879) (Acanthocephala: Archiacanthocephala) is a parasite that infects the gut of carnivores (racoons, coyotes, wolves, foxes, badgers, skunks, opossum, mink and bears) as an adult and the body cavity of lizards, snakes, and frogs as a cystacanth in the Americas. In this study, adults and cystacanths of M. ingens from southeastern Mexico and southern Florida, USA, were identified morphologically by having a cylindrical proboscis armed with 6 rows of hooks each with 6 hooks. Hologenophores were used to sequence the small (SSU) and larg

OBJECTIVE: To describe the novel PCR diagnosis and outcome of intestinal Echinococcus multilocularis in a dog.
ANIMAL: A 13-month-old female intact dog with naturally occurring intestinal E multilocularis.
CLINICAL PRESENTATION, PROGRESSION, AND PROCEDURES: The 13-month-old dog initially presented with a reduced appetite and weight loss and then developed hematochezia. The clinical history included a lack of endoparasite preventive care (fecal testing, deworming), exposure to coyotes, fox, sheep, and rodents and the dog had intermittently been fed a raw food diet. Physical examination reveal

BACKGROUND: Sarcoptic mange is a highly contagious skin disease caused by the ectoparasitic mite Sarcoptes scabiei. Although it afflicts over 100 mammal species worldwide, sarcoptic mange remains a disease obscured by variability at the individual, population and species levels. Amid this variability, it is critical to identify consistent drivers of morbidity, particularly at the skin barrier.
METHODS: Using culture-independent next generation sequencing, we characterized the skin microbiome of three species of North American canids: coyotes (Canis latrans), red foxes (Vulpes vulpes) and gray

Aerial delivery of oral rabies vaccine (ORV) baits has proven effective in large-scale efforts to immunize wildlife against rabies, and in North America this strategy currently is being used to immunize foxes (Urocyon cinereoargenteus and Vulpes vulpes), raccoons (Procyon lotor), and coyotes (Canis latrans). Skunks are also a major reservoir and vector of rabies, but at present oral vaccines for use in skunks are not licensed. Furthermore, given differences in morphology (smaller jaws) and behavior (food handling and consumption), it is unknown if baits currently used in ORV campaigns would be

Systemic risk in critical infrastructure is often analyzed through physical, geographic, and cyber interdependencies. Yet infrastructures are also interdependent through the governing rules that organize human action. These rule-mediated connections are a form of logical interdependency, and breakdowns in rule-governed action can create pathways through which disruption spreads. This paper develops a framework for diagnosing and quantifying this underrecognized source of systemic risk. It does so by modeling logical interdependencies as rule-mediated control relations that shape whether interc

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), an anxiety-related syndrome, is associated with increased risk for cardiovascular diseases. The present study investigated whether predator scent (PS) stress, a model of PTSD, induces sensitization of hypertension and anxiety-like behaviors and underlying mechanisms related to renin-angiotensin systems (RAS) and inflammation. Coyote urine, as a PS stressor, was used to model PTSD. After PS exposures, separate cohorts of rats were studied for hypertensive response sensitization (HTRS), anxiety-like behaviors, and changes in plasma levels and mRNA expressio

Toxoplasmosis, a worldwide distributed zoonosis, can be transmitted congenitally affecting fetuses and developing variable clinical signs. Different Toxoplasma gondii genotypes and infective dose are related factors with different clinical manifestations. Several studies indicate that atypical strains could produce more severe clinical manifestations compared to typical strains. Umbilical cord blood (n = 37) and placenta (n = 19) were collected at birth from women with acute T. gondii infection and processed for isolation by mice bioassay. Six isolates were obtained and identified as TgHm14-4A

Rabies is an ancient viral disease that significantly impacts human and animal health throughout the world. In the developing parts of the world, dog bites represent the highest risk of rabies infection to people, livestock, and other animals. However, in North America, where several rabies virus variants currently circulate in wildlife, human contact with the raccoon rabies variant leads to the highest per capita population administration of post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) annually. Previous rabies variant elimination in raccoons (Canada), foxes (Europe), and dogs and coyotes (United States)

BACKGROUND: This paper examines the individual factors that influence prevalence rates of canine heartworm in the contiguous United States. A data set provided by the Companion Animal Parasite Council, which contains county-by-county results of over nine million heartworm tests conducted during 2011 and 2012, is analyzed for predictive structure. The goal is to identify the factors that are important in predicting high canine heartworm prevalence rates.
METHODS: The factors considered in this study are those envisioned to impact whether a dog is likely to have heartworm. The factors include c

BACKGROUND: Previous research has identified a significant relationship between companion animal abuse and child abuse, yet no study has explored the relationship between child abuse and intentional wildlife aggression outside of lawful hunting practices or agricultural contexts.
OBJECTIVE: The goals of this exploratory study were to examine prevalence rates of intentional killing or harming wildlife, the associations between wildlife aggression and child abuse perpetration (psychological, physical, and very severe physical child abuse), and if cruelty-related motives for harming or killing w

Postpartum pain encompasses a range of physical and emotional discomforts, often influenced by hormonal changes, physical recovery, and individual psychological states. The complex interactions between the variables can make it difficult for traditional diagnostic techniques to fully capture, creating inadequacies and inefficient management techniques. The aims to develop a comprehensive diagnostic and management framework for postpartum pain by integrating Natural Language Processing (NLP), electrophysiological data, and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) principles. The seeks to enhance the
