Computed tomography assessment of Apert syndrome.

Apert syndrome, or acrocephalosyndactyly type I, is a craniofacial dysostosis, an autosomal dominant condition characterized by severe developmental disturbances of the craniofacial region including bilateral coronal synostosis associated with midface hypoplasia, exophthalmia, hypertelorism, and symmetric syndactyly of the hands and feet. The aim of this study is to assess the clinical and computed tomography imaging patterns of non-operated patients with Apert syndrome, correlating the bone abnormalities of the cranium, face and the skull base. The study population consisted of 5 patients wit

Fibroblast growth factor 8: Multifaceted role in development and developmental disorder.

Fibroblast growth factor 8 (FGF8), a secreted signaling molecule, involves in regulating cell survival, proliferation, migration, and differentiation. It exhibits a highly dynamic gene expression pattern throughout embryonic development, participates in craniofacial structures, limbs, internal organs, brain development, and is crucial during organogenesis. The dysregulation of precise localization and dosage of FGF8 at distinct embryonic stages can lead to developmental multiorgan abnormalities. This comprehensive review explores the FGF8 expression in humans and mice, summarizes the involveme

Obesity and craniofacial structure as risk factors for obstructive sleep apnoea: impact of ethnicity.

OSA is the result of structural and functional abnormalities that promote the repetitive collapse of the upper airway during sleep. This common disorder is estimated to occur in approximately 4% of men and 2% of women, with prevalence studies from North America, Australia, Europe and Asia indicating that occurrence is relatively similar across the globe. Anatomical factors, such as obesity and craniofacial morphology, are key determinants of the predisposition to airway collapse; however, their relative importance for OSA risk likely varies between ethnicities. Direct inter-ethnic studies comp

Bilateral parotid glands aplasia: a case report and literature review.

OBJECTIVES: Bilateral parotid gland aplasia is a rare congenital anomaly that almost consistently leads to xerostomia and caries. It is often associated with other congenital craniofacial abnormalities. The objective was to describe a case with asymptomatic bilateral parotid gland aplasia and to review previously reported cases. METHODS: Panoramic radiograph, computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging were obtained and an in-depth assessment of patient's dental status and sequence analysis of FGF10, FGFR2 and FGFR3 genes were performed. Previous reports of bilateral parotid gland apla

Effects of excess vitamin A on development of cranial neural crest-derived structures: a neonatal and embryologic study.

BACKGROUND: Vitamin A and its metabolites have been shown to be teratogenic in animals and humans producing defects of neural crest derived structures that include abnormalities of the craniofacial skeleton, heart, and thymus. Our prior studies with retinoic acid have established that gestational day (gd) 9 is a sensitive embryonic age in the mouse for inducing craniofacial and thymic defects. METHODS: We exposed pregnant mice to variable doses of vitamin A (retinyl acetate) on gd 9 and embryos were evaluated for changes in developing pharyngeal arch and pouch morphology, neural crest cell mi

[A contribution on Crouzon's disease].

Four generations of a family with craniofacial dysostosis were studied. All the members of the family affected by the disease had craniofacial abnormalities combined with ptosis on the left and some members also had convergence strabismus. A strong genetic correlation between ptosis and squint was found.

Dental and Craniofacial Anomalies in Fanconi Anemia: A Systematic Review and Additional 46 Reports.

OBJECTIVE: Fanconi anemia (FA), a rare genetic disorder, has not been comprehensively studied regarding its dental and craniofacial phenotypes. This study aimed to systematically review the available evidence on dental, occlusion, and craniofacial anomalies in individuals with FA and to describe the occurrence of these anomalies in a cohort from two Brazilian referral centers. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Electronic searches were conducted across six databases, supplemented by manual searches and gray literature. The Brazilian cohort included 46 patients diagnosed with FA. RESULTS: A total of 19 a

Cranial nerve manifestations in CHARGE syndrome.

Cranial nerve (CN) anomalies have been regarded as a major criterion for a clinical diagnosis of CHARGE syndrome for some time. However, there have been relatively few studies of the extent of this involvement. A detailed questionnaire (in French or English) was distributed to all physicians who participated in the 2001-2004 Canadian Paediatric Surveillance Program (CPSP), and who identified themselves as caring for an individual with CHARGE syndrome. Clinical data were collected from multiple sources for each individual, including evidence of CN dysfunction. Evidence for CN anomalies recorded

Syndromes with gingival fibromatosis: A systematic review.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of systematic review was to describe the phenotypes and molecular profiles of syndromes with gingival fibromatosis (GF). METHODS: A comprehensive search of PubMed, LILACS, Livivo, Scopus, and Web of Science was conducted using key terms relevant to the research questions and supplemented by a gray literature search. The Methodological Quality and Synthesis of Case Series and Case Reports in association with the Case Series and Prevalence Studies from the Joanna Briggs Institute critical appraisal tools were used for the risk of bias. We followed the PRISMA checklist guideli

Robinow syndrome: a diagnosis at the fingertips.

A 1-month-old full-term female was transferred to our facility from an outside hospital for further evaluation. Pregnancy was complicated by maternal diabetes, and birth weight was 4.1 kg. She was prenatally diagnosed with hypoplastic left heart syndrome and omphalocele. Postnatally, she was found to have cleft lip and palate, two natal teeth, choanal atresia, bilateral clubfeet, and imperforate anus. Physical examination was notable for short limbs and broad, apparently duplicated distal phalanx of digits 1–2 of both hands (Fig. 1). Her facial dys-morphology included frontal bossing, malar hy

Classification of congenital nasal deformities: a proposal to amend the existing classification.

UNLABELLED: Congenital nasal anomalies are rare malformations with a broad spectrum of defects. The only existing classification strictly relating to nasal anomalies was presented by Losee et al. (Plast Reconstr Surg 113(2):676-689, 2004). The aim of this paper is to propose some suggestions, based on our current knowledge and experience gained by treating our patients in the clinic, in creating a specification of patients with congenital nasal anomalies. All patients with congenital nose defects treated in our health center were selected for this study. The research was retrospective and incl

Anesthetic management of three pediatric cases with Pena-Shokeir syndrome.

Pena-Shokeir syndrome is a rare, early lethal disease. It is characterized by fetal growth restriction; craniofacial deformities, for example micrognathia and microcephaly; multiple ankyloses; and pulmonary hypoplasia. For patients with this syndrome, maintenance of airway and control of perioperative respiratory complications are important for anesthetic management. We report 3 pediatric cases of Pena-Shokeir syndrome undergoing tracheostomy and arthrolysis under general anesthesia using sevoflurane, nitrous oxide, fentanyl, and vecuronium bromide. Anesthetic procedures including mask ventila

Sella turcica morphology and the pituitary gland-a new contribution to craniofacial diagnostics based on histology and neuroradiology.

The present review summarizes two decades of published and unpublished studies on normal and pathological development of sella turcica and pituitary gland in humans. The pathological conditions are studied in known genotype deviations, syndromes, and other malformations. The studies include histological analyses of human prenatal material and profile radiographic analyses of human postnatal material, supplemented in a few cases with neuroradiology. Prenatal and postnatal results are compared. Similarities between prenatal and postnatal deviations in sella turcica morphology were demonstrated.
