Evaluation of chemerin and its receptors, ChemR23 and CCRL2, in gingival tissues with healthy and periodontitis.

Chemerin is a chemoattractant protein that directs inflammatory cells that express its receptor chemokine receptor-like 1 (ChemR23) towards sites of inflammation. C-C chemokine receptor-like 2 (CCRL2), is the other receptor of chemerin, improves the interaction between chemerin and ChemR23. The aim of this study was to evaluate the expression of chemerin and its receptors in gingival tissues with healthy and periodontitis. Tissue biopsy samples were obtained from 20 patients with chronic periodontitis and from the gingiva of 20 healthy individuals undergoing a crown lengthening process. Quanti

[External root resorption].

Root resorption may be a physiological (resorption of deciduous teeth) or a pathological process (resorption of permanent teeth). In the latter case an external and an internal form of resorption can be distinguished. Root resorption may occur on one tooth or on several teeth within a dentition and it may be caused by trauma, periodontitis, orthodontic treatment, internal bleaching, cysts, tumors, or by stimuli from a necrotic dental pulp. Current knowledge concerning the pathogenesis of root resorption and therapeutic approaches are presented. For cervical resorption, it is assumed that the s

Periodontal tissue reactions to orthodontic extrusion. An experimental study in the dog.

Orthodontic tooth extrusion is used at crown lengthening procedures or in conjunction with periodontal therapy aimed at eliminating or reducing angular bone defects. A technique for orthodontic extrusion combined with resection of the supracrestal attachment fibers (fiberotomy) was recently proposed as an adjunct to certain restorative procedures. The aim of the present investigation was to analyze reactions of the periodontal tissues to orthodontic extrusion when combined with fiberotomy. In 5 beagle dogs, the mesial roots of the 2nd, 3rd and 4th hemisected mandibular premolar were used as ta

Functional factors associated with continuous eruption of maxillary incisors in adulthood: A 10-year prospective cohort study.

PURPOSE: To investigate whether functional factors estimated by the masseter muscle thickness (MMT) and the maximum occlusal force (MOF), were associated with the amount of continuous eruption of maxillary incisors in adults. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Dental casts were taken twice in 24 adult female patients during a 10-year prospective cohort study. At the first appointment, ultrasonographic measures of the MMT and MOF were recorded. The casts were scanned into a digital model and measurements of the eruption and clinical crown lengthening (CL) of the maxillary incisors were calculated after su

Special considerations, treatment selection criteria, and case reports.

As understanding of the diagnostic and technical prerequisites for maximizing therapeutic results after guided tissue regeneration (GTR) therapy matures, the applications of such treatment have been expanded. This article discusses the use of GTR therapy in the esthetic zone, beneath pontics, and in combination with resective treatment modalities. A hierarchy of appropriate treatment selection is presented.

Effect of smokeless tobacco extract on human gingival keratinocyte levels of prostaglandin E2 and interleukin-1.

Gingival recession and white mucosal lesions frequently occur at sites of smokeless tobacco (ST) placement. The etiology of these alterations is presumably related to the irritating effects of tobacco components. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of an aqueous ST extract (STE) on gingival keratinocyte production of prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) and interleukin-1 (IL-1), mediators involved in periodontal destruction and keratinocyte proliferation. Keratinocyte cultures were established from healthy tissues discarded from 8 subjects undergoing crown lengthening procedures. Cells (pas

Modified lip repositioning to correct gummy smile: 8-year follow-up of identical twins.

BACKGROUND: Excessive gingival display (EGD) is an esthetic concern resulting in a gummy smile.  EGD affects patients' self-confidence with negative emotional and psychosocial impact. The amount of gingival display is affected by different etiologies, including skeletal, muscular, or dento-alveolar factors. The treatment generally addresses the etiology and includes surgical lip repositioning (LRP), esthetic crown lengthening, or orthognathic surgery. Modified LRP (mLRP) reduces gingival display with less morbidity compared to orthognathic surgery. METHODS: The current report highlights an 8-

Early Healing Events after Periodontal Surgery: Observations on Soft Tissue Healing, Microcirculation, and Wound Fluid Cytokine Levels.

Early wound healing after periodontal surgery with or without enamel matrix derivative/biphasic calcium phosphate (EMD/BCP) was characterized in terms of soft tissue closure, changes of microcirculation, and expression of pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines in gingival crevicular fluid/wound fluid (GCF/WF). Periodontal surgery was carried out in 30 patients (18 patients: application of EMD/BCP for regeneration of bony defects; 12 patients: surgical crown lengthening (SCL)). Healthy sites were observed as untreated controls. GCF/WF samples were collected during two post-surgical weeks. Flap mi

Prosthetic rehabilitation and management of an MTA-treated maxillary central incisor with root perforation and severe internal resorption.

Root canal perforation and root resorption are challenging clinical conditions to correctly diagnose and treat, especially when they occur in anterior teeth. This clinical report describes the computed tomography findings, endodontic treatment, prosthetic rehabilitation, and clinical outcome of an iatrogenic root perforation and internal resorption in a maxillary central incisor. The case management consisted of endodontic retreatment, periodontal surgery, and prosthetic rehabilitation. Gray mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) was used to fill the resorption space and seal the perforation. The pr

Trauma quiz. Terribly troublesome, trauma teeth.

Unfortunately, we come across many traumatised teeth during our practising career. Some of these traumatic injuries are rather simple to treat whereas others provide us with a real challenge. It is absolutely essential that the diagnosis of the injury be known before any treatment is attempted. When it comes to trauma, however, defining the exact form of treatment can often be very difficult. In this paper I will discuss some of the cases that I have managed and leave it up to YOU to decide whether my treatment has been correct, incorrect or whether there is some other form of treatment that w

Evaluation of the effect of IL-36γ expression on chronic periodontitis by enhancing the MAPK and TLR4 signaling pathways: A basic research.

Background. Periodontitis is an infectious and inflammatory disease of the supporting tissues of the tooth caused by specific microorganisms or a group of microorganisms and, if not treated, leads to progressive degradation of the supporting tissues and subsequent loss of the teeth affected. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of IL-36γ on periodontitis by enhancing the TLR4 and MAPK signaling pathways. Methods. In this pilot study, 50 patients with generalized moderate-to-severe chronic periodontitis and 50 individuals with healthy periodontium, who were candidates for crown len

Prenatal development of the bovine epididymis: light microscopical, glycohistochemical and immunohistochemical studies.

Prenatal development of the epididymis was studied in bovine fetuses ranging from 10 to 90cm crown-rump length (CRL) (75-285 pcd). The studies aimed to apply both glycohistochemistry and immunohistochemistry for the detection of the differentiation of the developing prenatal epididymis. Both conventional histological and histochemical techniques were applied on paraffin sections of the epididymis from different fetal stages. Establishment of the urogenital junction between the extra-testicular rete testis and the mesonephric duct, via the growing efferent ductules (ductuli efferentes) was firs

Expression of protease-activated receptors 1 and 2 in individuals with healthy gingiva and chronic periodontitis.

BACKGROUND: Protease-activated receptors (PAR-1 and PAR-2) are found to be immensely exhibited in the periodontal tissues. These receptors are involved in the inflammatory and repair processes. Activation of PARs is mainly by the bacterial and endogenous enzymes. The aim of the study was to determine the role of PAR-1 and PAR-2 in initiating periodontal inflammation and to immunolocalize these receptors in the gingival tissues of healthy and chronic periodontitis individuals. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 50 patients were selected for this study, of which 25 were healthy controls and 25 w

Hereditary gingival hyperplasia associated with amelogenesis imperfecta: a case report.

Hereditary gingival fibromatosis (HGF) and amelogenesis imperfecta (AI) are two rare oral conditions with genetic etiologies. The case of a 17-year-old boy affected by HGF, AI, anterior open bite, and pyramidal impaction of the maxillary molars is reported. Internal bevel gingivectomies were carried out to reduce gingival overgrowth. Clinical examination of the family revealed the presence of HGF and AI in his 12-year-old sister (both in milder forms) and of HGF in his older half brother. Genetic sequencing analyses were performed to detect any of the known mutations leading to HGF and AI. His

Increased visfatin expression is associated with nuclear factor-kappa B and phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase in periodontal inflammation.

OBJECTIVE: Visfatin is an adipocytokine that plays a role in regulating periodontal inflammation by as yet identified mechanisms. It has been suggested that visfatin mediates inflammation via activation of the nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB) and phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3k) signaling pathways which play a role in the inhibition of neutrophil apoptosis. The aim of this study was to investigate the expression of visfatin, NF-κB (NF-κB1 and NF-κB2), PI3k, tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α), and interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β) in the tissue of healthy individuals and patients with periodontitis
