Back to basics with ProFlex.

Despite advances in tool and machine design and a growing emphasis on safety, the potential for certain painful and expensive occupational injuries continues in the workplace. Wrist and low-back injuries are a case in point. Low-back pain is clearly the most costly occupational health problem. About half of all back injuries result from poor lifting and handling techniques. In order to augment the effect of training and educating workers in lifting techniques, safety consultants have been suggesting that certain at-risk groups be provided with flexible, externally worn lower-back support. Surgical treatment of distal ulnar artery aneurysm.

In the past 7 years, we have encountered six patients with finger ischemia as a result of digital artery occlusion associated with seven distal ulnar artery aneurysms. Our experience with the management of these patients forms the basis of this report. All patients were men, with a mean age of 29 years, and all experienced repetitive trauma to the involved upper extremity. Each patient presented with the acute onset of cool and painful digits, with no previous history of cold sensitivity or Raynaud's syndrome. None of the patients had any serologic or clinical evidence of autoimmune disease. A

[Ergonomic and biomechanical study of foot stress in workers using sewing machines].

Functional and morphologic examinations of the feet of 100 sewing-machine-workers have been performed, and a comparison with a control group. The relative frequency of radiological changes was similar in both groups, most commonly on metatarso-phalangeal joints, on the tarsus and in the form of a spine of Achilles tendon. However, clinical and functional changes were significantly more often on the feet of sewing-machine-workers, which were perimalleolar oedema, metatarsalgia and hallux valgus. The changes are more often and serious parallelly to the age and duration of employment, they are mo

'Repetition strain injury': an Australian epidemic of upper limb pain.

An analysis is provided of a recent Australian epidemic of an upper limb regional pain syndrome known as 'repetition strain injury' (RSI). 'RSI' was originally attributed to occupational over-use of the upper limb and biomechanical and ergonomic solutions were sought. More sceptical commentators argued that 'RSI' was an epidemic form of hysteria. More recently, a consensus has emerged that the epidemic is attributable to a combination of factors: a change in the perception of endemic symptoms of upper limb pain; the iatrogenic effects of the term 'RSI' and the methods used to manage it; and co

Overuse injuries in the young athlete.

Overuse injuries are now well known to sports enthusiasts at any age or level of competition. The seeming explosion of overuse stress fractures of lower extremity bones in high-profile professional basketball players has brought about widespread media attention and a better understanding of the phenomenon of "overuse syndrome" by the public. However, the spectrum of overuse injuries in the child or adolescent athlete has only recently been recognized. These injuries can range from the permanent disability of osteochondritis dissecans of the elbow to the completely nonspecific "growing pains" o

Orthopedic problems of the upper extremities. Assessment and diagnosis.

1. Cumulative trauma or repetitive motion disorders are among the most commonly reported occupational illness, and mainly affect the neck and upper extremities. 2. The etiology of cumulative trauma disorders includes nerve compression secondary to inflammation and tendinitis secondary to microtearing at tendon insertions and/or friction irritation of the tendons. 3. Work postures, such as forward flexed position of head, neck, and shoulders; static loading of muscles; as well as repetitive motions can cause cumulative trauma disorders or aggravate pre-existing problems. 4. The occupational hea

The Predictive Utility of Trauma Subtypes in the Assessment of Mental Health Outcomes for Persons Resettled as Refugees.

Pre-migration trauma, a psychological risk factor for refugees, is often measured using cumulative indices. However, recent research suggests that trauma subtypes, rather than cumulative trauma, may better predict psychological outcomes. This study investigated the predictive utility of trauma subtypes in the assessment of refugee mental health. Multiple regression was used to determine whether cumulative trauma or trauma subtypes explained more variance in depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptom scores in 70 Syrian and Iraqi refugees. Subtype models performed be

Sports Injuries: Traumatic and Overuse Injuries of the Shoulder.

The shoulder joint, one of the most complex and mobile articulations in the human body, is prone to derangement as a result of acute trauma or repetitive microtraumatic injury in athletes. In contact and collision sports, most shoulder injuries are acromioclavicular joint sprains and dislocations, glenohumeral dislocations, and rotator cuff injuries. In overhead and throwing athletes, rotator cuff and labral pathologies are frequent and typically arise as the result of overuse repetitive microtraumatic injuries of the glenohumeral articulation. This review article summarizes the epidemiology,

Diagnostic Imaging in Tennis: Epidemiology, Biomechanics, and Radiologic Spectrum of Injuries.

Tennis is a sport characterized by high physical demands and complex biomechanical movements, leading to specific patterns of injuries. This article reviews the epidemiology, biomechanics, and radiologic features of injuries related to tennis, focusing on the musculoskeletal system (extremities, trunk, and spine). Injury mechanisms are closely linked to the dynamics of the kinetic chain and the repetitive motions intrinsic to the sport. Imaging techniques, such as radiography, ultrasound, computed tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging, play a crucial role in evaluating acute and overuse i

Prescribed footwear and orthoses are not prophylactic in preventing lower extremity injuries in military tactical athletes: a systematic review with meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Military members are exposed to high cumulative physical loads that frequently lead to injury. Prescribed footwear and orthoses have been used to prevent injury. The purpose of this systematic review with meta-analysis was to assess if prescribed prophylactic footwear or foot orthoses reduced the risk of lower extremity injury in military tactical athletes. METHODS: MEDLINE, Embase, Web of Science, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature, SportDiscus, and Defense Technical Information Center databases were searched for randomised controlled trials published at a

Imaging of primary periphyseal finger stress injuries in climbers.

Periphyseal stress injuries (PPSIs) in young rock climbers are gaining recognition due to the surge in popularity of the sport. These injuries, occurring near the growth plates of fingers, pose diagnostic challenges due to their subtle presentation and potential long-term complications if left untreated. This review emphasizes the importance of radiologists' awareness of PPSIs, covering their anatomy, biomechanics, and imaging findings. Techniques like the "crimp-grip" in climbing exacerbate the vulnerability of the physis, leading to repetitive stress injuries. Imaging modalities such as radi

Alterations in pitching biomechanics and performance with an increasing number of pitches in baseball pitchers: A narrative review.

In baseball pitchers, the association of fatigue with overuse injury and decline in pitching performance has been discussed frequently, but the scientific data concerning their interrelationships have been inconsistently reported. The purpose of this narrative review is to summarize and explore the evidence regarding acute changes in pitching biomechanics and performance from repetitive throwing motions among baseball pitchers. Muscle fatigue from repetitive throwing not only decreases muscle output but also disturbs the kinetic chain of baseball pitching. In addition, repetitive throwing can

Occupational Stress as a Possible Risk Factor for Rotator Cuff Damage - Systematic Review and Meta-analysis.

PURPOSE: In September 2021, the Federal Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs in Germany (BMAS) recommended recognising rotator cuff lesions caused by occupational long-term overhead work, repetitive movements, hand-arm-vibration and carrying and lifting heavy loads as an occupational disease. To gain a more detailed understanding of the correlation between occupational risk factors and lesions of the rotator cuff, a systematic literature review was carried out to determine their influence on the development of rotator cuff disease. MATERIAL AND METHOD: A systematic literature review was used

Biomechanics associated with tibial stress fracture in runners: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Tibial stress fracture (TSF) is an overuse running injury with a long recovery period. While many running studies refer to biomechanical risk factors for TSF, only a few have compared biomechanics in runners with TSF to controls. The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to evaluate biomechanics in runners with TSF compared to controls. METHODS: Electronic databases PubMed, Web of Science, SPORTDiscus, Scopus, Cochrane, and CINAHL were searched. Risk of bias was assessed and meta-analysis conducted for variables reported in 3 or more studies. RESULTS: The search ret
