Real-time gastrointestinal infection surveillance through a cloud-based network of clinical laboratories.

Acute gastrointestinal infection (AGI) represents a significant public health concern. To control and treat AGI, it is critical to quickly and accurately identify its causes. The use of novel multiplex molecular assays for pathogen detection and identification provides a unique opportunity to improve pathogen detection, and better understand risk factors and burden associated with AGI in the community. In this study, de-identified results from BioFire® FilmArray® Gastrointestinal (GI) Panel were obtained from January 01, 2016 to October 31, 2018 through BioFire® Syndromic Trends (Trend), a clo

Correlation between CD4 counts of HIV patients and enteric protozoan in different seasons - an experience of a tertiary care hospital in Varanasi (India).

BACKGROUND: Protozoan infections are the most serious among all the superimposed infections in HIV patients and claim a number of lives every year. The line of treatment being different for diverse parasites necessitates a definitive diagnosis of the etiological agents to avoid empirical treatment. Thus, the present study has been aimed to elucidate the associations between diarrhoea and CD4 counts and to study the effect of HAART along with management of diarrhoea in HIV positive patients. This study is the first of its kind in this area where an attempt was made to correlate seasonal variati

Burden of intestinal protozoan parasites coinciding with Helicobacter pylori infection in patients with gastrointestinal symptoms.

AIM: Protozoal infections are underdiagnosed contributors to gastrointestinal disease. As their symptoms frequently overlap with those of Helicobacter pylori infection, a leading cause of gastrointestinal illness, coinfections may be overlooked. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of intestinal protozoal infections among patients referred for H. pylori stool testing and to explore their association with clinical symptoms and risk factors. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 150 patients presenting with gastrointestinal complaints. Stool samples were examined using compr

The burden of intestinal parasitic infections in Antioquia, Colombia: Impact in childhood growth development and nutritional status.

Gastrointestinal protist (GP) and soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infections cause significant morbidity among children in poor-resource settings of tropical and sub-tropical countries including Colombia. Few prospective transversal studies investigating how GP and STH infections affect growth development and nutritional status during childhood have been conducted in this country, none of them in the Antioquia Department. This microscopy-based study estimated the prevalence of GP and helminth (including STH) infections in faecal samples from schoolchildren (n = 384) collected during April-May

Molecular Detection of Gastrointestinal Pathogens Using a Multiplex Gastrointestinal Panel and Their Associations With Demographic and Clinical Characteristics.

Background Acute gastroenteritis causes morbidity across all age groups, and timely, effective identification of its etiologic agents is essential for clinical management and antimicrobial stewardship. Conventional diagnostic methods have limited sensitivity and often fail to detect coinfections or specific bacterial pathotypes. In contrast, molecular methods, such as FilmArray panels, are rapid, highly sensitive, and capable of detecting coinfections. This study aimed to characterize gastrointestinal pathogens detected by the BioFire FilmArray Gastrointestinal Panel (BioFire Diagnostics, LLC,

Deep learning-based detection and viability assessment of Eimeria oocysts.

Coccidiosis, caused by Eimeria species, is a significant disease affecting the poultry industry worldwide, leading to substantial economic losses due to reduced flock performance. Effective vaccination strategies require the precise quantification of the dosage of viable Eimeria oocysts to induce immunity in young chicks without causing disease. However, current methods for determining oocyst viability rely on sophisticated equipment and are not effective for routine monitoring. Recently, we documented the presence of granular structures exclusively in dead oocysts using high-resolution micros

Microbial Safety of Sachet Water in Ghana: A Systematic Review.

INTRODUCTION: Access to safe drinking water is crucial for health and survival, yet many developing countries face significant challenges in this regard. In West Africa, rapid urbanisation has outpaced efforts to improve access to potable water, compelling households to rely on private vendors for solutions, particularly through the growing market for sachet water. Widely consumed in Ghana, sachet water has become a convenient and affordable option, with over 37% of the population depending on it. However, concerns about its microbial safety persist, as studies indicate that sachet water often

Stool multiplex PCR assay versus conventional stool tests for detecting gastrointestinal infection as a cause for flare of inflammatory bowel disease.

BACKGROUND: In inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), a flare can be due to natural history of disease or due to gastrointestinal infection. Infection is conventionally diagnosed by stool microscopy and culture. Stool multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay or Biofire® FilmArray® GI Panel is a sensitive and rapid test for detecting infection, but is expensive; its impact on management and cost-effectiveness has not been studied in IBD. AIMS: To compare stool PCR assay and conventional tests during IBD flare for detection of infection, impact of detection on treatment and cost-effectiveness

A baseline epidemiological study of the co-infection of enteric protozoans with human immunodeficiency virus among men who have sex with men from Northeast China.

BACKGROUND: Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and enteric parasite co-infection not only aggravates the clinical symptoms of parasites but also accelerates acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) progression. However, co-infection research on men who have sex with men (MSM), the predominant high-risk population of HIV/AIDS in China, is still limited. In this study, we investigated the epidemiology of enteric parasites, risk factors, and associations with clinical significance in an MSM HIV/AIDS population in Heilongjiang Province, northeast China. METHODS: We recruited 308 MSMs HIV/AIDS pa

Causes of Mortality and Lesions Observed Post mortem in European Moles (Talpa europaea) in Cornwall, South-west England.

European moles (Talpa europaea) are a common species in the UK, but there are few published data on the causes of mortality in these animals. An opportunistic post-mortem study was carried out on 44 moles found dead or dying in Cornwall, UK. Assessment of muscle condition and fat reserves, where possible, indicated that most (27 of 37, 73%) were in good nutritive condition. The majority had died of trauma (n = 40, 91%), the principal cause of which was predation (n = 36, 81.8%) by foxes and domestic cats and dogs. The carcases were in a variable state of preservation, but 28 cases were suitabl

New trends in emerging pathogens.

The emergence of pathogens is the result of a number of impact in all parts of the food chain. The emerging technologies in food production explain how new pathogens can establish themselves in the food chain and compromise food safety. The impact of the food technology is analysed for several bacteria, such as Yersinia, Campylobacter, Arcobacter, Helicobacter pullorum, Enterobacter sakazakii, Mycobacterium avium spp. paratuberculosis, prions related to vCJD and others. The importance of the ability of many microbes to form VBNC forms is elaborated on. Research on culture independent methods m

Early healing of soft tissue following alveolar ridge preservation according to the sealing material: a retrospective clinical study.

BACKGROUND: Enterocolitis and gastroenteritis remain major health problems, particularly in children living in developing countries. Intestinal protozoa, such as Entamoeba histolytica, Blastocystis, and Cyclospora, are frequently associated with these conditions. Amebic colitis can cause serious complications, including fulminant necrotizing colitis, toxic megacolon, extraintestinal amebiasis, and stunting in children. The diagnosis of amoebiasis is challenging, relying on microscopic examination, which cannot distinguish E. histolytica from the nonpathogenic E. dispar and E. moshkovskii. Ther
