This research aimed to investigate melatonin rhythms in the pineal organ of two nocturnal fish species, sole and tench, which show high sensitivity to light. Pineal organs were cultured in vitro under an LD (12 h light:12 h dark) cycle to study the daily rhythmicity of melatonin release. In addition, the in vitro culture was performed under conditions of constant darkness (DD) to study the endogenous control of the rhythm. The course of parasitemia of cloned Trypanoplasma borreli in laboratory-infected common carp was investigated. Goldfish retinae deprived of their target by tectal ablation showed characteristics of regeneration, such as sprouting activity in culture and changes in protein synthesis. These features resemble changes occurring in regenerating retinae of optic nerves which were subjected only to crush injury. Application of horseradish peroxidase (HRP) to the proximal end of the transected saccular nerve in the goldfish results in uptake by fibers projecting to the distal half of the Mauthner (M) cell's lateral dendrite. More discrete HRP injections reveal an organized projection from the saccular nerve onto the lateral dendrite, as small groups of stained fibers terminate there in restricted regions. The possibility that this represents a tonotopic projection onto the M-cell is considered.

Intestinal mucous cell numbers and their glycoconjugate composition were investigated by histochemical methods in uninfected chub, Squalius cephalus, and in conspecifics naturally parasitised with the acanthocephalan Pomphorhynchus laevis. A sub-population of 42 chub from the River Tiber (Perugia, Italy) were sampled and screened for ecto and endoparasites. No parasites were found in gills and in other visceral organs of chub and P. laevis appeared to be the only enteric worm encountered. In all infected chub (twenty-eight out of 42) this acanthocephalan was encountered mainly in the mid-gut.
