PURPOSE: We have conducted a prospective open-label study to examine the safety and efficacy of the long-term administration of the tricyclic antidepressant amitriptyline in patients with interstitial cystitis (IC).
METHODS: Patients were stratified into 2 groups: an NIDDK group including patients fulfilling the NIDDK criteria for IC and a non-NIDDK group encompassing patients who presented the characteristic IC symptoms but met at least one of the NIDDK exclusion criteria. Amitriptyline was taken strictly at bedtime following an established self-titration protocol without a limitation of the

A clinical guideline and algorism for interstitial cystitis and hypersensitive bladder syndrome has been developed by a group of East Asian urologists as a revised form of the Japanese guideline for interstitial cystitis. The guideline defines interstitial cystitis (IC) as a disease of the urinary bladder diagnosed by 3 requirements; 1) a characteristic complex of lower urinary tract symptoms, 2) bladder pathology such as Hunner's ulcer and bladder bleeding after overdistension, and 3) exclusions of confusable diseases. The characteristic symptom complex is termed as hypersensitive bladder syn

AIMS: Obstructive symptoms such as slow stream, dribbling and straining are often reported by painful bladder syndrome and interstitial cystitis (PBS/IC) patients. Our hypothesis was that some patients with PBS/IC have an associated measurable bladder outlet obstruction (BOO) secondary to dysfunctional voiding and that those patients with more severe PBS/IC are more likely to have BOO.
METHODS: This is a retrospective chart review of female patients diagnosed with PBS/IC based on the NIDDK research definition. Charts were reviewed for clinical symptom severity, ulcer or non-ulcer PBS/IC on cy

OBJECTIVES: Interstitial cystitis (IC) is a challenging disease complex. Patients' perception of their outcomes after different treatment modalities may be the best measure of therapeutic efficacy. Our study focused on a large group of women with a diagnosis of IC who reported on perceived outcomes after undergoing invasive and pharmaceutical treatments for their disease.
METHODS: Seven hundred fifty patients with a diagnosis of IC completed a computerized survey that queried each patient about their demographics, symptoms, concomitant diagnoses, treatments, and their perceived treatment outc

PURPOSE: Bladder hydrodistention is used to diagnose and treat patients with interstitial cystitis. This procedure has been shown to have minimal morbidity and provide symptomatic relief in a subset of patients with interstitial cystitis. We report our experience with almost total bladder necrosis after hydrodistention at 2 institutions. To our knowledge this rare complication has not been previously reported in the literature. We also reviewed the literature regarding complications of hydrodistention and discuss their possible etiology.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We report 3 cases of bladder nec

PURPOSE: Normal urinary Tamm-Horsfall protein shows a urothelial cytoprotective effect against potentially toxic compounds in urine that may injure the urothelium and cause bladder disease. One such disease is interstitial cystitis. In patients with interstitial cystitis this protective effect is decreased. We hypothesized that a difference in Tamm-Horsfall protein in patients with interstitial cystitis exists that may be involved in disease pathogenesis.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay the urinary Tamm-Horsfall protein concentration was determined in patients w

BACKGROUND: Evidence from a genetic linkage study had suggested a possible syndrome in some families with panic disorder (PD). This syndrome includes bladder problems (possibly urinary interstitial cystitis [IC]), thyroid disorders, chronic headaches/migraine, and/or mitral valve prolapse. In 19 multiplex families with PD, one marker (D13S779) on chromosome 13 gave a logarithm of odds score of more than 4 when individuals with any of the syndrome conditions were analyzed as affected. Families with the bladder problems yielded the highest logarithm of odds scores. These findings were replicated

Male chronic pelvic pain syndrome (MCPPS) and interstitial cystitis (IC) patients show striking similarities in clinical presentation, diagnostic evaluation, purported pathogenesis, and even response to therapy. This makes the distinction between them very difficult. This review aims to show just how easy it is for the clinician to miss the features of IC in the MCPPS patient (and conversely). Misdiagnosis can result in the rejection of various potentially helpful therapies while accurate early diagnosis will lead to appropriate therapies and a better quality of life for the patient.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the Interstitial Cystitis Symptom Index and Problem Index as a screening tool for interstitial cystitis, and to estimate the prevalence and risk factors for interstitial cystitis in women with chronic pelvic pain.
METHODS: Forty-five women scheduled to undergo laparoscopy for chronic pelvic pain were recruited. Women were questioned about lower urinary tract symptoms, administered the Interstitial Cystitis Symptom Index and Problem Index, and rated pain symptoms on a 0-10 visual analogue scale. Cystoscopy with hydrodistension and bladder biopsy was performed at the time

OBJECTIVE: Sambucus nigra (SN) has been found to exhibit strong antioxidant properties and anti-inflammatory effects. In our study, we aimed to investigate the therapeutic effects of Sambucus nigra extracts (SNe) in interstitial cystitis, a condition in which inflammation plays a significant role in its pathophysiology.
METHODS: Thirty Wistar albino adult female rats were used in this study. All rats were housed at an average room temperature of 23°C, with a 12-h light/dark cycle, and had ad libitum access to food. The rats were divided into three groups: Group 1 (n = 10): Control (sham) grou

PURPOSE: This study aimed to determine whether urinary secretory immunoglobulin A (sIgA) levels differ between patients with bladder pain syndrome/interstitial cystitis (BPS/IC) and healthy controls, and to assess whether urinary sIgA is linked to mucosal immune mechanisms that may contribute to BPS/IC pathophysiology.
METHODS: A single-center, cross-sectional study was conducted between April and June 2020 at the Department of Urology, Ege University Faculty of Medicine. Forty female patients with BPS/IC and 40 healthy controls were enrolled. Symptom severity in the BPS/IC group was evaluate

BACKGROUND: Interstitial cystitis is a diagnosis of exclusion due to the complexity of its etiology and pathology, which is a chronic disease with an unknown etiology. To our knowledge, few studies were performed to identify predictive biomarkers for interstitial cystitis.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to identify and validate potential biomarkers for Interstitial Cystitis (IC).
METHODS: The interstitial cystitis datasets were retrieved from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database. Differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified by using the R package and were subjected to functional

Interstitial cystitis (IC), defined as a painful bladder syndrome (PBS), is a chronic condition that manifests itself as a suprapubic pain associated with an enhancing of frequency/urgency of urination, and for which there is no cure. Here, we present a retrospective pilot study on women affected from IC/PBS and treated with bovine lactoferrin (bLf). A total of 31 women, affected (20) or unaffected (11) from hereditary thrombophilia (HT), presented the median of 6 episodes of IC/PBS during the 6 months before the study. Treatment consisted of 17 weeks of orally administered Valpalf® capsules,

Our understanding of interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome (IC/BPS) has evolved over time. The diagnosis of IC/BPS is primarily based on symptoms such as urgency, frequency, and bladder or pelvic pain. While the exact causes of IC/BPS remain unclear, it is thought to involve several factors, including abnormalities in the bladder's urothelium, mast cell degranulation within the bladder, inflammation of the bladder, and altered innervation of the bladder. Treatment options include patient education, dietary and lifestyle modifications, medications, intravesical therapy, and surgical inter

Interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome (IC/BPS) is a common and frequently misdiagnosed disorder in men. Hallmark symptoms are the presence of chronic discomfort attributed to the urinary bladder associated with bladder filling and relieved with bladder emptying, often associated with irritative voiding symptoms, in the absence of any other identifiable cause. It is often grouped with another common clinical entity, chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome (CP/CPPS). Men with IC/BPS often suffer from a delay in diagnosis and subsequent treatment, often being categorized as having

OBJECTIVES: Urological chronic pelvic pain syndrome includes interstitial cystitis/painful bladder syndrome (IC/PBS), a chronic bladder pain condition of unknown etiology. Interstitial cystitis/painful bladder syndrome can co-occur with a number of associated conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome and fibromyalgia. The purpose of this study was to estimate the heritability of approximately 20 associated conditions in first-degree relatives (and if appropriate, second- and third-degree relatives) of patients with IC/PBS to identify shared genetic contributions for the disease combinations.

We report a suicide attempt by an interstitial cystitis patient. A 68-year-old woman consulted several clinics with complaints of urinary frequency and bladder pain, but her symptoms did not improve. She was admitted to our hospital and diagnosed with interstitial cystitis. Hydrodistention was performed, and the urethral catheter removed one day after surgery. The next day, the patient was afraid that her symptoms had not improved and, due to this physical and mental distress, cut her wrist with a razor. Vascular anastomosis and neuroanastomosis were performed accordingly. Eighteen months afte
