The dynamic regulatory network of stamens and pistils in papaya.

BACKGROUND: Papaya exhibits three sex types: female (XX), male (XY), and hermaphrodite (XYh), making it an unusual trioecious model for studying sex determination. A critical aspect of papaya sex determination is the pistil abortion in male flowers. However, the regulatory networks that control the development of pistils and stamens in papaya remain incompletely understood. RESULTS: In this study, we identified three organ-specific clusters involved in papaya pistils and stamens development. We found that pistil development is primarily characterized by the significant expression of auxin-rel

ELONGATED HYPOCOTYL5-mediated light signaling promotes shoot regeneration in Arabidopsis thaliana.

Injured plant somatic tissues regenerate themselves by establishing shoot or root meristems. In Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana), a two-step culture system ensures regeneration by first promoting the acquisition of pluripotency and subsequently specifying the fate of new meristems. Although previous studies have reported the importance of phytohormones auxin and cytokinin in determining the fate of new meristems, whether and how environmental factors influence this process remains elusive. In this study, we investigated the impact of light signals on shoot regeneration using Arabidopsis hypo

The Chromatin Remodeling Factor BrCHR39 Targets DNA Methylation to Positively Regulate Apical Dominance in Brassica rapa.

The SHPRH (SNF2, histone linker, PHD, RING, helicase) subfamily belonging to ATP-dependent chromatin remodeling factor is the effective tumor-suppressor, which can polyubiquitinate PCNA (proliferating cell nuclear antigen) and participate in post-replication repair in human. However, little is known about the functions of SHPRH proteins in plants. In this study, we identified a novel SHPRH member BrCHR39 and obtained BrCHR39-silenced transgenic Brassica rapa. In contrast to wild-type plants, transgenic Brassica plants exhibited a released apical dominance phenotype with semi-dwarfism and multi

Loss of S-nitrosoglutathione reductase disturbs phytohormone homeostasis and regulates shoot side branching and fruit growth in tomato.

S-Nitrosoglutathione plays a central role in nitric oxide (NO) homeostasis, and S-nitrosoglutathione reductase (GSNOR) regulates the cellular levels of S-nitrosoglutathione across kingdoms. Here, we investigated the role of endogenous NO in shaping shoot architecture and controlling fruit set and growth in tomato (Solanum lycopersicum). SlGSNOR silencing promoted shoot side branching and led to reduced fruit size, negatively impacting fruit yield. Greatly intensified in slgsnor knockout plants, these phenotypical changes were virtually unaffected by SlGSNOR overexpression. Silencing or knockin

Efficacy evaluation of some fumigants against Fusarium oxysporum and enhancement of tomato growth as elicitor-induced defense responses.

Fusarium wilt, the most serious soil-borne pathogen, is a serious problem for tomato production worldwide. The presented study evaluated the antifungal activity against Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. lycopersici in vitro and in vivo for nine fumigants. In addition, the research examined the possibility of enhancing the growth of tomato plants in order to increase resistance against this disease by using four chemical inducers. The results indicated that at 20 mg/L, the radial growth of the pathogen was inhibited 100% by formaldehyde and > 80% by phosphine. Among the essential oils investigated, nee

Propagation of Polygonatum macranthum (Maxim.) Koidz. from immature seeds using a new sterilization procedure.

Natural seed germination is difficult to achieve in numerous plant species of wide economic importance. The germination of Polygonatum macranthum seeds takes as long as one and a half years under natural conditions. In addition, propagation by rhizome is also extremely slow in this species. Therefore, the natural propagation of P. macranthum through seeds or rhizome is not efficient. In this study, an efficient in vitro propagation system for P. macranthum from immature seeds with seed coat was developed, using a new surface sterilization protocol that utilized a low concentration of hypochlor

A DREB-Like Transcription Factor From Maize (Zea mays), ZmDREB4.1, Plays a Negative Role in Plant Growth and Development.

The DREB (dehydration-responsive element binding)-type transcription factors are classified into six subgroups, named A-1 to A-6. The members of DREB A-1 and A-2 subgroups have been reported to be involved in response to various abiotic stresses. However, there were only a few genes belonging to A-3 to A-6 subgroups to be reported. In this study, we cloned a DREB A-4 subgroup gene from maize (Zea mays), ZmDREB4.1, and analyzed its characteristics and functions. ZmDREB4.1 was expressed in roots, stems, and leaves at very low levels. It was not induced by any biotic or abiotic treatment. ZmDREB4

Exogenous Abscisic Acid and Gibberellic Acid Elicit Opposing Effects on Fusarium graminearum Infection in Wheat.

Although the roles of salicylate (SA) and jasmonic acid (JA) have been well-characterized in Fusarium head blight (FHB)-infected cereals, the roles of other phytohormones remain more ambiguous. Here, the association between an array of phytohormones and FHB pathogenesis in wheat is investigated. Comprehensive profiling of endogenous hormones demonstrated altered cytokinin, gibberellic acid (GA), and JA metabolism in a FHB-resistant cultivar, whereas challenge by Fusarium graminearum increased abscisic acid (ABA), JA, and SA in both FHB-susceptible and -resistant cultivars. Subsequent investiga

Antimicrobial activity of Anonna mucosa (Jacq.) grown in vivo and obtained by in vitroculture.

Brazilian flora includes numerous species of medicinal importance that can be used to develop new drugs. Plant tissue culture offers strategies for conservation and use of these species allowing continuous production of plants and bioactive substances. Annona mucosa has produced substances such as acetogenins and alkaloids that exhibit antimicrobial activities. The widespread use of antibiotics has led to an increase in multidrug-resistant bacteria, which represents a serious risk of infection. In view of this problem, the aim of this work was to evaluate the antibacterial potential of extract

Characterisation of the dark green islands of cucumber mosaic virus infected Nicotiana tabacum.

There are significant differences between the DGIs and LGTs. Additionally, most of the characteristics indicate that the DGIs are more similar to recovered tissue and can resist viral attacks. Dark green islands (DGIs) surrounded by light green tissues (LGTs) are common leaf symptoms of plants that are systemically infected by various mosaic viruses. We performed cytological, physiological and molecular biological analyses of the DGIs and LGTs in cucumber mosaic virus-infected Nicotiana tabacum leaves. Our results indicated that the DGIs contained less virus than did the LGTs. Compared to the

Integrated physiological, transcriptomic and metabolomic analyses reveal the mechanism of UV-B radiation enhancement to alleviate drought stress damage in Tibetan hulless barley (qingke).

Drought (D) and ultraviolet-B (UV-B) radiation present severe, frequently co-occurring constraints on crop productivity, particularly in high-altitude environments such as the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau. Although drought severely impairs plant growth and photosynthetic capacity, UV-B radiation can counterintuitively mitigate drought-induced damage; however, the molecular and metabolic mechanisms underpinning this stress cross-talk remain poorly understood. Here, using integrated physiological, transcriptomic, and metabolomic profiling, we examine how Tibetan hulless barley (qingke) responds to ind

Harnessing Sex Reversion via Chemical Intervention in Cannabis sativa L.

Cannabis sativa is a multipurpose dioecious species whose crop performance is governed by sex expression. Although sex is genetically determined by an X/Y chromosome system, plants can develop flowers of the opposite sex through sex reversion, commonly induced by manipulating endogenous hormone levels using plant growth regulators (PGRs). Here, we evaluated the effectiveness of PGRs that promote or inhibit major hormone pathways implicated in plant sex expression. Male and female clones from two accessions were treated with foliar applications of nine PGRs and four combinatory treatments to as

The multifaceted role of gibberellins in somatic embryogenesis: from in vitro culture to molecular networks.

Gibberellins (GAs) are central regulators of plant growth and development, yet their involvement in somatic embryogenesis (SE) has received limited attention and often produces contradictory results. This review critically examines the current knowledge on the role of GAs in SE by integrating evidence from physiological, molecular, and developmental studies across a wide range of plant species. Available data indicate that exogenous GAs and GA biosynthesis inhibitors can either promote or inhibit the induction, progression, and conversion of somatic embryos, depending on the species, genotype,

Cadmium Phytotoxicity, Tolerance, and Advanced Remediation Approaches in Agricultural Soils; A Comprehensive Review.

Cadmium (Cd) is a major environmental contaminant due to its widespread industrial use. Cd contamination of soil and water is rather classical but has emerged as a recent problem. Cd toxicity causes a range of damages to plants ranging from germination to yield suppression. Plant physiological functions, i.e., water interactions, essential mineral uptake, and photosynthesis, are also harmed by Cd. Plants have also shown metabolic changes because of Cd exposure either as direct impact on enzymes or other metabolites, or because of its propensity to produce reactive oxygen species, which can ind

The role of MYB21 in jasmonate-mediated processes in Arabidopsis: transcending flower-specific functions to vegetative tissue.

Jasmonic acid (JA) and its derivatives are lipid-derived phytohormones that coordinate plant growth, development, and stress responses through the bioactive conjugate jasmonoyl-isoleucine (JA-Ile). Their role in reproductive development is well established, particularly in stamen maturation through the R2R3-MYB transcription factor MYB21, which has been considered largely flower-specific. Here, we reveal a previously unrecognized role of MYB21 in vegetative tissues of Arabidopsis thaliana. Although basal MYB21 transcript levels in leaves are extremely low and spatially restricted, wounding and

RNA-Seq Analysis Reveals Potential Genes Involved in Plant Growth Regulator-Induced Ovary Development in Male Kiwifruit (Actinidia eriantha).

Kiwifruit is a dioecious woody liana fruit tree, and the non-fruitfulness of male plants leads to a great deal of blindness in the selection of male plants in crossbreeding. In this study, we induced the development of male plant ovary by externally applying plant growth regulators (PGRs) and performed histological observation, phytohormone content determination and transcriptome analysis on the abortive ovary of the male kiwifruit (Con), the ovary of the female kiwifruit (Fem) and the PGR-induced developing ovary of the male kiwifruit (PT). Histological analysis showed that the Con ovary was

Study on the cutting technology of chayote (Sechium edule) and the physiological mechanism of rooting regulation by exogenous hormones.

BACKGROUND: 'Tuershao' is a new chayote (Sechium edule) variety whose tuberous roots and tender shoots are edible. These parts are rich in beneficial substances, including amino acids, proteins, phenolic compounds, flavonoids, cucurbitacin, and selenium, demonstrating their unique value. However, its ovary cannot develop into a mature fruit, and cutting techniques help to achieve the breeding of 'Tuershao'. RESULTS: This study found that using peat soil as the substrate and treating semi-hard branches with 1.0 g·L⁻¹ indole-3-butyric acid (IBA) achieved the highest rooting rate of 94.33%, with

Iturin and fengycin lipopeptides inhibit pathogenic Fusarium by targeting multiple components of the cell membrane and their regulative effects in wheat.

Biocontrol microorganisms and their derived metabolites with antagonistic activity represent promising alternatives to chemical fungicides in managing plant pathogens. The lipopeptides (LPs) iturin and fengycin derived from Bacillus amyloliquefaciens S76-3 exhibit highly inhibitory effects against pathogenic fungi, especially Fusarium graminearum (Fg), the primary pathogen causing Fusarium head blight (FHB) in cereals. However, the specific target of iturin and fengycin in Fg and the underlying mechanism of antagonistic activity remain unclear. Here, global transcriptome sequencing, combined w
