Assessing pesticide pollution in surface water of two basins in western Mexico: spatiotemporal variability, potential ecological risk assessment, and pesticides prioritization.

This study analyzed the presence of pesticides in surface waters of two basins in western Mexico, through an analysis of spatiotemporal variability, a potential ecological risk assessment and a prioritization analysis. Eighty water samples were collected at 10 sites distributed in the Marabasco basin and the Armería sub-basin during the years 2023 and 2024, covering the dry and wet seasons. Forty-nine pesticides were analyzed by gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry and high-performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry, of which 20 were detected. The herbicides ametryn,

Ethnobotanical study of some of mosquito repellent plants in north-eastern Tanzania.

BACKGROUND: The use of plant repellents against nuisance biting insects is common and its potential for malaria vector control requires evaluation in areas with different level of malaria endemicity. The essential oils of Ocimum suave and Ocimum kilimandscharicum were evaluated against malaria vectors in north-eastern Tanzania. METHODOLOGY: An ethnobotanical study was conducted at Moshi in Kilimanjaro region north-eastern Tanzania, through interviews, to investigate the range of species of plants used as insect repellents. Also, bioassays were used to evaluate the protective potential of sele

Repellent effects of the essential oils of Cymbopogon citratus and Tagetes minuta on the sandfly, Phlebotomus duboscqi.

BACKGROUND: The sandfly, Phlebotomus duboscqi is a vector of zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis (ZCL) that is an important public health problem in Eastern Africa. Repellents have been used for protection of humans against vectors of ZCL and other vectors that transmit killer diseases including malaria, Rift Valley fever, dengue, and yellow fever. The repellent effects of different doses of the essential oils from the lemon grass, Cymbopogon citratus and Mexican marigold, Tagetes minuta were evaluated in a two-chamber bioassay against 3- to 7-day-old unfed females of P. duboscqi in the laborator

Functional characterization of the octenol receptor neuron on the maxillary palps of the yellow fever mosquito, Aedes aegypti.

BACKGROUND: 1-Octen-3-ol (octenol) is a common attractant released by vertebrates which in combination with carbon dioxide (CO(2)) attracts hematophagous arthropods including mosquitoes. A receptor neuron contained within basiconic sensilla on the maxillary palps of adult mosquitoes responds selectively to 1-octen-3-ol. Recently, an odorant receptor (AaegOR8) known to occur on the maxillary palps was expressed in a heterologous system and demonstrated to be selectively sensitive to (R)-(-)-1-octen-3-ol, one of two enantiomeric forms. Lesser responses were elicited by stimulation with the (S)-e

Efficient enzyme-mediated degradation of various emerging pollutants, including 2-mercaptobenzothiazole, paracetamol, and sulfamethoxazole, using HRP@UiO-66-NH2.

The increasing contamination of water sources due to industrialization and population growth poses significant environmental and health risks, even at trace pollutant concentrations. Enzymatic bioremediation, particularly using horseradish peroxidase (HRP), has shown great potential in pollutant degradation due to its high selectivity and catalytic efficiency. However, limitations such as poor operational stability and reusability hinder its large-scale application. The degradation of structurally diverse emerging pollutants by UiO-66-NH2-immobilized HRP, including the influence of redox media

Reduced birth weight in relation to pesticide mixtures detected in cord blood of full-term infants.

Previous research has shown that prenatal exposure to pesticides may be associated with decreased fetal growth. The specific pesticides investigated and results reported across studies have been inconsistent, and there is a mounting need for the consideration of mixtures rather than individual agents in studies of health outcomes in relation to environmental exposures. There are also many individual pesticides that have not been investigated in human health studies to date. We conducted a pilot study in rural Zhejiang province, China, measuring 20 non-persistent pesticides (10 insecticides, 6

Acaricidal bioactivity and molecular target analysis of Origanum onites and Ocimum gratissimum essential oils against Haemaphysalis doenitzi ticks.

BACKGROUND: Haemaphysalis doenitzi is a parasite mainly found on the body surface of birds that is capable of transmitting rickettsiae and borrelia, which can cause serious zoonotic diseases. Chemical acaricides are controversial because they pollute the environment and predispose ticks to resistance. In contrast, plant essential oils (EOs) are favored for their effective acaricide properties and environmental friendliness. METHODS: The constituents of Origanum onites and Ocimum gratissimum EOs were profiled using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Acaricidal activities were evalua

From data to reliable conclusions: Identification and comparison of persistent micropollutants and transformation products in 37 wastewater samples by non-target screening prioritization.

In this study, micropollutants in wastewater effluents were prioritized by monitoring the composition of influent and effluent wastewater by liquid chromatography - high-resolution mass spectrometry (LCHRMS) non-target screening (NTS) analysis. The study shows how important data pre-processing and filtering of raw data is to produce reliable NTS data for comparison of compounds between many samples (37 wastewater samples) analyzed at different times. Triplicate injections were critical for reducing the number of false-positive detections. Intensity drift corrections within and between batches

Longitudinal evaluation of an educational intervention for preventing tick bites in an area with endemic lyme disease in Baltimore County, Maryland.

The authors attempted to determine whether a targeted educational intervention in an area with endemic Lyme disease could increase knowledge, positive attitudes, and reported behaviors related to tick bite prevention and consequently decrease tick bites, as measured by a biomarker of tick bites. Between April and September of 1999, 317 subjects in Baltimore County, Maryland, were randomized to receive either tick-related or general health-related educational materials bimonthly through the mail. At each of three clinic visits, participants completed a self-administered questionnaire and provid

Nitric oxide reduces tumor cell adhesion to isolated rat postcapillary venules.

Adhesion of circulating tumor cells to microvascular endothelium plays an important role in tumor metastasis to distant organs. The purpose of this study was to determine whether nitric oxide (NO) would attenuate tumor cell adhesion (TCA) to naive or lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-treated postcapillary venules. A melanoma cell line, RPMI 1846, was shown to be much more adhesive to postcapillary venules isolated from rat mesentery than to corresponding precapillary arterioles. Although venules exposed to LPS for 4 h demonstrated an increased adhesivity for the melanoma cells, TCA to LPS-treated arter

Fingolimod mitigates memory loss in a mouse model of Gulf War Illness amid decreasing the activation of microglia, protein kinase R, and NFκB.

Gulf War Illness (GWI) is an unrelenting multi-symptom illness with chronic central nervous system and peripheral pathology affecting veterans from the 1991 Gulf War and for which effective treatment is lacking. An increasing number of studies indicate that persistent neuroinflammation is likely the underlying cause of cognitive and mood dysfunction that affects veterans with GWI. We have previously reported that fingolimod, a drug approved for the treatment of relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis, decreases neuroinflammation and improves cognition in a mouse model of Alzheimer's disease. Incorporation of single-wall carbon nanotubes into an organic polymer monolithic stationary phase for mu-HPLC and capillary electrochromatography.

Single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWNT) were incorporated into an organic polymer monolith containing vinylbenzyl chloride (VBC) and ethylene dimethacrylate (EDMA) to form a novel monolithic stationary phase for high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and capillary electrochromatography (CEC). The retention behavior of neutral compounds on this poly(VBC-EDMA-SWNT) monolith was examined by separating a mixture of small organic molecules using micro-HPLC. The result indicated that incorporation of SWNT enhanced chromatographic retention of small neutral molecules in reversed-phase HPLC presuma

Nitric oxide selectively decreases interferon-gamma expression by activated human T lymphocytes via a cGMP-independent mechanism.

The role of exogenous nitric oxide (NO) on the expression of interleukin (IL)-2, IL-4, IL-5 and interferon-gamma (IFN-gamma) by freshly isolated human T lymphocytes was investigated. The presence of NO, generated from any of the NO-donor compounds, S-nitroso-N-acetyl-D,L-penicillamine (SNAP), DPTA-nonoate (DPTA) or DETA-nonoate (DETA), added 15 min prior to T-cell stimulation (for 24 hr) with anti-CD3/anti-CD28 monoclonal antibodies (mAbs), resulted in up to 50% inhibition of IL-4, IL-5 and IFN-gamma secretion. In contrast, IL-2 secretion was not inhibited. Using the guanylate cyclase inhibito

Trace organic contaminant removal in six full-scale integrated fixed-film activated sludge (IFAS) systems treating municipal wastewater.

Trace organic contaminants (TrOCs) often pass through conventional activated sludge wastewater treatment plants (CAS-WWTPs) and are discharged into surface waters, where they can threaten aquatic ecosystems and human health, largely due to the hormone disrupting effects of certain TrOCs. The integrated fixed-film activated sludge (IFAS) process is a cost-effective means of upgrading CAS-WWTPs by adding free-floating carrier media, which promotes biofilm formation in the well-mixed suspended growth reactors, providing a potential niche for slow-growing microorganisms. Although IFAS upgrades are
