Concussion-Related Disruptions to Hub Connectivity in the Default Mode Network Are Related to Symptoms and Cognition.

Concussions present with a myriad of symptomatic and cognitive concerns; however, the relationship between these functional disruptions and the underlying changes in the brain are not yet well understood. Hubs, or brain regions that are connected to many different functional networks, may be specifically disrupted after concussion. Given the implications in concussion research, we quantified hub disruption within the default mode network (DMN) and between the DMN and other brain networks. We collected resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging data from collegiate student-athletes (n

Abnormal default mode network could be a potential prognostic marker in patients with disorders of consciousness.

OBJECTIVES: The study aimed to investigate disorders of consciousness (DOC) mechanisms of patients with severe traumatic brain injury (sTBI) related to default mode network (DMN) and to introduce a machine learning model that predicts the prognosis of these patients for 6 months. METHODS: The sTBI patients suffering from DOC and healthy controls underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging. We defined patients with Extended Glasgow Outcome Score ≥ 5 as good outcome group, otherwise they were poor outcome group. The differences of DMN between sTBI and healthy controls and between good and p

Altered Functional Integration in the Salience and Default Mode Networks in Euthymic Pediatric Bipolar Disorder.

Accumulating studies demonstrate emotional and cognitive dysregulation in the euthymic period of pediatric bipolar disorder (PBD). However, the relative contribution of functional integration in human brain to disturbed emotion and cognitive function in the euthymic PBD patients remains unclear. In this study, 16 euthymic PBD patients and 16 healthy controls underwent resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging. A data-driven functional connectivity analysis was used to investigate functional connectivity changes of the euthymic PBD. Compared with healthy controls, the euthymic PBD exh

Stronger Functional Connectivity in the Default Mode and Salience Networks Is Associated With Youthful Memory in Superaging.

"Superagers" are older adults who, despite their advanced age, maintain youthful memory. Previous morphometry studies revealed multiple default mode network (DMN) and salience network (SN) regions whose cortical thickness is greater in superagers and correlates with memory performance. In this study, we examined the intrinsic functional connectivity within DMN and SN in 41 young (24.5 ± 3.6 years old) and 40 older adults (66.9 ± 5.5 years old). Superaging was defined as youthful performance on a memory recall task, the California Verbal Learning Test (CVLT). Participants underwent a resting-st

Association of ovarian hormones with mapping concept of self and others in the brain's default mode network.

The brain's default mode network (DMN) has become closely associated with self-referential mental activity, particularly in the resting-state. Prior reports point that the sex hormones are potent modulators of brain plasticity and functional connectivity. However, it is uncertain whether changes in ovarian hormones, as occur during the monthly menstrual cycle, substantially affects the functional connectivity of DMN. Here, we employed a Self-Awareness Scale (SAS) and the resting-state functional MRI in the late follicular phase and the mid-luteal phase to investigate the effect of the estradio

A Dissociation in Effects of Risperidone Monotherapy on Functional and Anatomical Connectivity Within the Default Mode Network.

Respective changes in functional and anatomical connectivities of default mode network (DMN) after antipsychotic treatment have been reported. However, alterations in structure-function coupling after treatment remain unknown. We performed diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) and resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging in 42 drug-naive first-episode schizophrenia patients (FESP) both at baseline and after 8-weeks risperidone monotherapy, and in 38 healthy volunteers. Independent component analysis was used to assess voxel-wise DMN synchrony. A 3-step procedure was used to trace fiber pat

Functional connectivity between salience, default mode and frontoparietal networks in post-stroke depression.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have demonstrated altered resting state functional connectivity (rsFC) in patients with post-stroke depression (PSD). It remains unclear whether rsFC is changed at the network level as was shown for major depressive disorder (MDD). To address this question, we investigated rsFC of resting sate networks (RSNs) in PSD. METHODS: Eleven subjects with PSD underwent fMRI scanning at rest before and after treatment. The severity of depression was assessed using the aphasic depression rating scale (ADRS). We performed functional network connectivity (FNC) analysis for RSN

Altered default mode and fronto-parietal network subsystems in patients with schizophrenia and their unaffected siblings.

The complex symptoms of schizophrenia have recently been linked to disrupted neural circuits and corresponding malfunction of two higher-order intrinsic brain networks: The default mode network (DMN) and the fronto-parietal network (FPN). These networks are both functionally heterogeneous and consist of multiple subsystems. However, the extent to which these subsystems make differential contributions to disorder symptoms and to what degree such abnormalities occur in unaffected siblings have yet to be clarified. We used resting-state functional MRI (rs-fMRI) to examine group differences in int

KIBRA gene variants are associated with synchronization within the default-mode and executive control networks.

Genetic variation at the KIBRA rs17070145 polymorphism has been linked to episodic memory, executive function, and Alzheimer's disease (AD), which are related to the structural and functional integrity of the default-mode network (DMN) and executive control network (ECN). We hypothesize that the KIBRA polymorphism could modulate the structure and function of the DMN and ECN in healthy young subjects, which might underlie the association between this gene and cognitive function. To test our hypothesis, we analyzed the resting-state synchronization in the DMN and ECN in 288 young, healthy Chines

Abnormal functional connectivity of default mode sub-networks in autism spectrum disorder patients.

Autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) are characterized by deficits in social and communication processes. Recent data suggest that altered functional connectivity (FC), i.e. synchronous brain activity, might contribute to these deficits. Of specific interest is the FC integrity of the default mode network (DMN), a network active during passive resting states and cognitive processes related to social deficits seen in ASD, e.g. Theory of Mind. We investigated the role of altered FC of default mode sub-networks (DM-SNs) in 16 patients with high-functioning ASD compared to 16 matched healthy controls

Abnormal Functional Connectivity in Cognitive Control Network, Default Mode Network, and Visual Attention Network in Internet Addiction: A Resting-State fMRI Study.

Internet addiction (IA) has become a global mental and social problem, which may lead to a series of psychiatric symptoms including uncontrolled use of internet, and lack of concentration. However, the exact pathophysiology of IA remains unclear. Most of functional connectivity studies were based on pre-selected regions of interest (ROI), which could not provide a comprehensive picture of the communication abnormalities in IA, and might lead to limited or bias observations. Using local functional connectivity density (lFCD), this study aimed to explore the whole-brain abnormalities of function

Phase-lagged tACS between executive and default mode networks modulates working memory.

Transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) is an efficient neuromodulation technique to enhance cognitive function in a non-invasive manner. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging, we investigated whether a cross-frequency coupled tACS protocol with a phase lag (45 and 180 degrees) between the central executive and the default mode networks modulated working-memory performance. We found tACS-phase-dependent modulation of task performance reflected in hippocampal activation and task-related functional connectivity. Our observations provide a neurophysiological basis for neuromodul

Differential effects of hypnotherapy and cognitive behavioral therapy on the default mode network of depressed patients.

Hypnosis has been applied in healing procedures since the earliest of recorded history and today it is implemented in a wholesome concept Hypnotherapy (HT1). On a neurophysiological level, hypnosis has been associated with parts of the Default Mode Network (DMN2), but its effects on this network when induced in a treatment setting of a widespread disorder, namely depression, have never been investigated. Depression is associated with abnormal functional connectivity (FC3) of the DMN. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT4) has proven itself to be an effective treatment for depression; effects of C

Resting-state abnormalities in functional connectivity of the default mode network in migraine: A meta-analysis.

Migraine-a disabling neurological disorder, imposes a tremendous burden on societies. To reduce the economic and health toll of the disease, insight into its pathophysiological mechanism is key to improving treatment and prevention. Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) studies suggest abnormal functional connectivity (FC) within the default mode network (DMN) in migraine patients. This implies that DMN connectivity change may represent a biomarker for migraine. However, the FC abnormalities appear inconsistent which hinders our understanding of the potential neuropatho

Increased cortical thickness in nodes of the cognitive control and default mode networks in psychosis of epilepsy.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the cortical morphological associations of the psychoses of epilepsy. METHODS: Psychosis of epilepsy (POE) has two main subtypes - postictal psychosis and interictal psychosis. We used automated surface-based analysis of magnetic resonance images to compare cortical thickness, area, and volume across the whole brain between: (i) all patients with POE (n = 23) relative to epilepsy-without psychosis controls (EC; n = 23), (ii) patients with interictal psychosis (n = 10) or postictal psychosis (n = 13) relative to EC, and (iii) patients with postictal psychosis (n = 13) rel

Subcortical control of the default mode network: Role of the basal forebrain and implications for neuropsychiatric disorders.

The precise interplay between large-scale functional neural systems throughout the brain is essential for performance of cognitive processes. In this review we focus on the default mode network (DMN), one such functional network that is active during periods of quiet wakefulness and believed to be involved in introspection and planning. Abnormalities in DMN functional connectivity and activation appear across many neuropsychiatric disorders, including schizophrenia. Recent evidence suggests subcortical regions including the basal forebrain are functionally and structurally important for regula

The Ventral and Dorsal Default Mode Networks Are Dissociably Modulated by the Vividness and Valence of Imagined Events.

Recent work has shown that the brain's default mode network (DMN) is active when people imagine the future. Here, we test in human participants (both sexes) whether future imagination can be decomposed into two dissociable psychological processes linked to different subcomponents of the DMN. While measuring brain activity with fMRI as subjects imagine future events, we manipulate the vividness of these events to modulate the demands for event construction, and we manipulate the valence of these events to modulate the demands for event evaluation. We found that one subcomponent of the DMN, the

Subjective cognitive decline detected by the oscillatory connectivity in the default mode network: a magnetoencephalographic study.

Discriminating between those with and without subjective cognitive decline (SCD) in cross-sectional investigations using neuropsychological tests is challenging. The available magnetoencephalographic (MEG) studies have demonstrated altered alpha-band spectral power and functional connectivity in those with SCD. However, whether the functional connectivity in other frequencies and brain networks, particularly the default mode network (DMN), exhibits abnormalities in SCD remains poorly understood. We recruited 26 healthy controls (HC) without SCD and 27 individuals with SCD to perform resting-st

Rumination and the default mode network: Meta-analysis of brain imaging studies and implications for depression.

Rumination is strongly and consistently correlated with depression. Although multiple studies have explored the neural correlates of rumination, findings have been inconsistent and the mechanisms underlying rumination remain elusive. Functional brain imaging studies have identified areas in the default mode network (DMN) that appear to be critically involved in ruminative processes. However, a meta-analysis to synthesize the findings of brain regions underlying rumination is currently lacking. Here, we conducted a meta-analysis consisting of experimental tasks that investigate rumination by us

Depression and anxiety symptoms are associated to disruption of default mode network in subacute ischemic stroke.

Depression and anxiety symptoms are common after stroke and associated to reduction in quality of life and poor physical and social outcomes. The Default Mode Network (DMN) plays an important role in the emotional processing. We investigated whether these symptoms are associated to a disruption of DMN functional connectivity in the first month after stroke. Thirty-four subacute ischemic stroke patients were submitted to: 1) behavioral assessment through Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI) and Structured Clinical Interview for DSM Disorders; 2) neuropsychological asses
