One-visit apexification: technique for inducing root-end barrier formation in apical closures.

Numerous procedures and materials have been utilized to induce root-end barrier formation. Mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) was introduced to dentistry as a root-end filling material. It has been advocated for filling root canals, repairing perforations, pulp capping, and root-end induction. Mineral trioxide aggregate reacts with tissue fluids to form a hard tissue apical barrier. As a result, MTA shows promise as a valuable material for use in one-visit apexification treatment, primarily for treating immature teeth with necrotic pulps.

Porous Tantalum VS. Titanium Implants: Enhanced Mineralized Matrix Formation after Stem Cells Proliferation and Differentiation.

Titanium dental implants are used routinely, with surgical procedure, to replace missing teeth. Even though they lead to satisfactory results, novel developments with implant materials can still improve implant treatment outcomes. The aim of this study was to investigate the efficiency of porous tantalum (Ta) dental implants for osseointegration, in comparison to classical titanium (Ti). Mesenchymal stem cells from the dental pulp (DPSC) were incubated on Ta, smooth titanium (STi), and rough titanium (RTi) to assess their adhesion, proliferation, osteodifferentiation, and mineralized matrix pr

In-Depth Analysis of AG73-Dental Pulp Cell Interactions Underlying Adhesion and Mineralization: Insights from Alanine Scanning.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to explore the dental applications of AG73, a laminin-derived adhesive peptide, by examining its effects on human dental pulp cells (hDPCs), particularly in cell adhesion and mineralization. It also sought to identify the key functional residue of AG73 and the signaling pathways involved in its pro-mineralization activity. METHODS: We compared AG73's pro-mineralization activity with peptides derived from LAMA5 using alizarin red staining. Immunofluorescence staining assessed its cell adhesion properties. Alanine-scanning mutagenesis was performed to identify key r

Endodontic and aesthetic management of a conoid tooth with type IIIA dens invaginatus.

BACKGROUND: Dens invaginatus is a dental developmental abnormality caused by an infolding of the enamel organ into the adjacent dental papilla before the calcification of the dental tissues. The clinical presentation of dens invaginatus varies according to its severity, from mild forms, in which we might find a deeper than normal cingulum pit, to severe cases, in which there is a pronounced infolding reaching the apical foramen. The very nature of the invagination favours the contamination from the oral environment to the pulp space and the onset of caries. Therefore, patients might present wi

Constitutive stabilization of ß-catenin in the dental mesenchyme leads to excessive dentin and cementum formation.

Wnt/ß-catenin signaling plays an important role in morphogenesis and cellular differentiation during development. Essential roles of Wnt/ß-catenin signaling in tooth morphogenesis have been well known, but the involvement of Wnt/ß-catenin signaling in the dental hard tissue formation remains undefined. To understand roles of Wnt/ß-catenin signaling in dentin and cementum formation, we generated and analyzed the conditional ß-catenin stabilized mice in the dental mesenchyme. The OC-Cre;Catnb(lox(ex3)/+) mice exhibited malformed teeth characterized by aberrantly formed dentin and excessively dep

Pulp Stone Formation Following Fixed Orthodontic Treatment: A Panoramic Radiographic Comparison of Extraction and Non-Extraction Approaches.

OBJECTIVE: The impact of orthodontic forces on pulp stone formation has been the focus of several studies. Given that orthodontic extractions typically involve the application of greater forces to the teeth, the aim of this study was to compare the extent of pulp stone formation in the molar teeth of patients undergoing orthodontic treatment with and without extractions. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In this retrospective observational study, panoramic radiographs of 80 orthodontic patients taken between 2014 and 2020 (equally divided into extraction and non-extraction groups) who had a full set of p

Ca-binding domains in the odontoblast layer of rat molars and incisors under normal and pathological conditions.

We recently reported the presence of high concentrations of a Ca-binding matrix in the circumpulpal dentin of rat incisors which had been prevented from mineralization by a systemic administration of 1-hydroxyethylidene-1,1-bisphosphonate (HEBP), a type of bisphosphonates, thus suggesting the role of the putative Ca-binding matrix in the appositional mineralization of circumpulpal dentin (TAKANO et al., 1998, 2000; OHMA et al., 2000). In this study, we examined the distribution of Ca-binding domains in the pulp tissue of normal rat teeth and its changes under the influence of HEBP, in order to

Guided Endodontic Treatment of Mandibular Incisor with Pulp Canal Obliteration following Dental Trauma: A Case Report.

Root canal obliteration is caused by hard tissue apposition and is often associated with teeth with a history of trauma, orthodontic movement, caries reaction, restorative procedures near the pulp chamber, and teeth of elderly patients. Preoperative planning of root canal treatment should be thorough and include an assessment of the patient's signs and symptoms in addition to the evaluation of complementary examinations. In a 27-year-old patient with dyschromia of the lower central incisor, a history of dental trauma, and a positive response to vertical percussion, an initial periapical radiog

A Comparative In Vitro Analysis of the Osteogenic Potential of Human Dental Pulp Stem Cells Using Various Differentiation Conditions.

Dental pulp stem cells (DPSCs) have excellent proliferative properties, mineralization potential and can be easily obtained from third molar teeth. Recently, many studies have focused on isolation and differentiation of DPSCs. In our study, we focused on biological properties of non-differentiated DPSCs in comparison with osteogenic differentiated cells from DPSCs. We analyzed morphology as well as mineralization potential using three varied osteogenic differentiation media. After fifteen days of differentiation, calcium deposit production was observed in all three osteogenic differentiation m

Comparison of the accuracy of two different methods in dental age estimation.

INTRODUCTION: Age estimation plays a crucial role in forensic medicine, particularly in countries facing significant refugee-related challenges. There are many parameters used for age estimation. The aim of this study is to evaluate the visibility of the pulp and periodontal ligament space in the mandibular third molar using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) images and to compare the effectiveness of these two methods in chronological age estimation, specifically in assessing the 18-21 age thresholds. METHOD: CBCT images of 359 patients (189 females, 170 males), aged between 16 and 29 were

Trauma quiz. Terribly troublesome, trauma teeth.

Unfortunately, we come across many traumatised teeth during our practising career. Some of these traumatic injuries are rather simple to treat whereas others provide us with a real challenge. It is absolutely essential that the diagnosis of the injury be known before any treatment is attempted. When it comes to trauma, however, defining the exact form of treatment can often be very difficult. In this paper I will discuss some of the cases that I have managed and leave it up to YOU to decide whether my treatment has been correct, incorrect or whether there is some other form of treatment that w

In vitro development of lower first molars from the osteopetrotic microphthalmic (mi) mouse.

While the precise mechanism of tooth eruption remains unknown it has been established that for tooth eruption to occur a functioning dental follicle is essential and normal bone resorption is required. In the osteopetrotic microphthalmic (mi) mouse, teeth fail to erupt and development is affected. In the present study, an organ culture technique was established to culture successfully lower first molars from normal and affected mi mice so as to determine if developmental defects were intrinsic to the dental tissue or whether such defects were a result of local environmental factors. Tissue was

Amount of bone lengthening affects blood flow recovery and bone mineralization after distraction osteogenesis in a canine cleft palate model.

OBJECTIVES: Distraction osteogenesis has been applied to the craniofacial region. To reduce the cleft width of patients with cleft lip and palate, alveolar bones are distracted toward the cleft. However, no reports have described limitations to the amount of lengthening that can be achieved by distraction osteogenesis in this area. Therefore, we investigated the healing process following different extents of distraction osteogenesis using a canine cleft palate model. METHODS: A 10-mm bone defect was made in the palates. A bony segment including the canine was prepared and translocated into th

Endodontic management of horizontally placed molars after gunshot injury to mandible: a case report.

A 37-year-old man reported to our department with the history of gunshot injury to the mandible 15 years before. His anterior mandible had been resected earlier and bone graft was seen. Intraoral examination of lower jaw revealed 4 remaining mandibular molars. These teeth were severely rotated such that they lay horizontal with respect to the mandibular base. Preoperative Dentascan spiral computerized tomography (CT) of the patient revealed obliteration of the mesial canals of the mandibular right first molar and pear-shaped internal resorption defect in the distal canal of the same tooth. Dentin dysplasia type I: report of atypical cases in the permanent and mixed dentitions.

Dentin dysplasia type I is a rare hereditary disturbance of dentin formation characterized clinically by nearly normal appearing crowns and severe hypermobility of teeth. Radiographic analysis shows obliteration of all pulp chambers, short, blunted, and malformed roots, and periapical radiolucencies of noncarious teeth. This paper presents 2 cases demonstrating both classic and atypical features of type I dentin dysplasia in the mixed and permanent dentitions. The clinical, radiographic, and histopathologic\findings of this condition and treatment are described.
