Enhanced Electrochemical Performance of Polyaniline-Boron Doped Diamond Electrode for Supercapacitor Applications.

Understanding how to tune the properties of electroactive materials is a key parameter for their applications in energy storage systems. This work presents a comprehensive study in tailoring polyaniline (PANI) suspensions by acid-assisted polymerization method and their subsequent deposition on boron-doped diamond (BDD) supports with low/high B concentrations. The porous or densely packed morphology of PANI is successfully controlled by varying the monomer-to-initiator ratio. The interaction between PANI and BDDs leads to the shift in oxidation and reduction potentials, and the high B doping r

Atomic-level characterization of crystal defects in a polycrystalline silicon-diamond structure.

Electronic-grade polycrystalline silicon of large size holds a crucial position in the semiconductor industry due to its extensive application prospects. This study aims to fill the gap in the atomic-level characterization of crystal defects within polycrystalline silicon. By employing focused ion beam technology for sample preparation and combining advanced scanning electron microscopy-electron backscatter diffraction technology with aberration-corrected transmission electron microscopy, we have uncovered that the silicon core of the polycrystalline silicon exhibits a single crystal structure

Diamond-Blackfan anaemia presents as pathological foetal CTG and severe neonatal anaemia.

Diamond-Blackfan anaemia (DBA) is a rare congenital disorder characterised by pure red cell aplasia and often associated with various congenital anomalies. This chronic condition has a heterogeneous genetic profile, typically inherited in an autosomal dominant manner, though rare cases of autosomal recessive inheritance exist. Most patients (90%) exhibit symptoms before 12 months of age, with the median age of presentation and diagnosis being approximately 2 months. This report presents a unique case of DBA identified at birth, resulting in a preterm delivery. The patient continues to be manag

Single-Cell Hyperthermia: Diamond Quantum Thermometry Reveals Thermal Control of Macrophage Polarization.

Fever elevates body temperature to enhance immune response; however, intracellular temperature can fluctuate by up to 15 °C, suggesting a previously unrecognized layer of thermal regulation. While hyperthermia has long been exploited in medicine, how localized temperature gradients influence cellular fate remains poorly understood. Here, a dual-function nanodiamond platform is introduced that integrates optically detected magnetic resonance (ODMR) thermometry with croconium-dye-based photothermal heating to precisely modulate temperature within endo-lysosomal compartments of macrophages. Contr

Growth Charts for Shwachman-Diamond Syndrome at Ages 0 to 18 Years.

Shwachman-Diamond syndrome (SDS) is one of the most common inherited bone marrow failure syndromes. SDS is characterized by hypocellular bone marrow, with a severe impairment of the myeloid lineage, resulting in neutropenia, thrombocytopenia, and, more rarely, anemia. Almost 15% of patients with SDS develop myelodysplastic syndrome or acute myeloid leukemia as early as childhood or young adulthood. Exocrine pancreatic insufficiency is another common feature of SDS. Almost all patients with SDS show failure to thrive, which is associated with skeletal abnormalities due to defective ossification

Neurotoxicity associated with the medicinal mushroom product-Diamond Shruumz: A case report.

Medicinal mushrooms are widely available as health supplements, and the federal government does not currently require these products to be examined for quality and contents. This places consumers at risk for unintentional ingestion of other substances, including toxic mushroom species. We describe a case report of an ingestion of an edible medicinal mushroom product likely contaminated with muscimol, the primary toxin of Amanita muscaria. A 17-year-old female presented with altered mental status, mydriasis, salivation, and myoclonic jerks that were refractory to benzodiazepines. She was intuba

Diamond Quantum Sensing Revealing the Relation between Free Radicals and Huntington's Disease.

Huntington's disease (HD) is a well-studied yet rare disease caused by a specific mutation that results in the expression of polyglutamine (PolyQ). The formation of aggregates of PolyQ leads to disease and increases the level of free radicals. However, it is unclear where free radicals are generated and how they impact cells. To address this, a new method called relaxometry was used to perform nanoscale MRI measurements with a subcellular resolution. The method uses a defect in fluorescent nanodiamond (FND) that changes its optical properties based on its magnetic surroundings, allowing for se

Shwachman-Diamond syndromes: clinical, genetic, and biochemical insights from the rare variants.

Shwachman-Diamond syndrome is a rare inherited bone marrow failure syndrome characterized by neutropenia, exocrine pancreatic insufficiency, and skeletal abnormalities. In 10-30% of cases, transformation to a myeloid neoplasm occurs. Approximately 90% of patients have biallelic pathogenic variants in the SBDS gene located on human chromosome 7q11. Over the past several years, pathogenic variants in three other genes have been identified to cause similar phenotypes; these are DNAJC21, EFL1, and SRP54. Clinical manifestations involve multiple organ systems and those classically associated with t

Atypical Findings of Shwachman-Diamond Syndrome in Early Infancy: A Diagnostic Challenge.

Shwachman-Diamond syndrome (SDS) is a rare autosomal recessive disorder characterized by hematological abnormalities, exocrine pancreatic insufficiency, and skeletal dysplasia. We describe a 2-month-old girl with intrauterine and extrauterine growth restriction who presented with an isolated severe anemia requiring red blood cell transfusion, without gastrointestinal symptoms, history of infection, or congenital abnormalities. An abdominal ultrasound revealed a reduced pancreatic thickness and abnormal echogenicity without fat infiltration, further confirmed by MRI. Because of this peculiar pa

Amantadine: reappraisal of the timeless diamond-target updates and novel therapeutic potentials.

The aim of the current review was to provide a new, in-depth insight into possible pharmacological targets of amantadine to pave the way to extending its therapeutic use to further indications beyond Parkinson's disease symptoms and viral infections. Considering amantadine's affinities in vitro and the expected concentration at targets at therapeutic doses in humans, the following primary targets seem to be most plausible: aromatic amino acids decarboxylase, glial-cell derived neurotrophic factor, sigma-1 receptors, phosphodiesterases, and nicotinic receptors. Further three targets could play

[Clinical features, diagnosis, and treatment of Chinese children with Shwachman-Diamond syndrome].

In order to clearly define the features of Shwachman-Diamond syndrome (SDS) in Chinese children, this article analyzes and summarizes the epidemiology, clinical features, and key points in the diagnosis and treatment of SDS in Chinese children with review of the clinical data of 27 children with SDS from related articles published previously. A comparative analysis was made between the Chinese and international data related to childhood SDS. The results showed a male/female ratio of about 2:1 in the Chinese children with SDS, with an age of onset of <1 month to 5 years (median 1 month) and an

A novel Drosophila model for neurodevelopmental disorders associated with Shwachman-Diamond syndrome.

Genetic defects in ribosome biogenesis result in a group of diseases called ribosomopathies. Patients with ribosomopathies manifest multiorgan phenotypes, including neurological impairments. A well-characterized ribosomopathy, Shwachman-Diamond syndrome (SDS), is mainly associated with loss-of-function mutations in the causal gene SBDS. Children with SDS have neurodevelopmental disorders; however, the neurological consequences of SBDS dysfunction remain poorly defined. In the present study, we investigated the phenotype of Drosophila melanogaster following knockdown of CG8549, the Drosophila o

Shwachman-Diamond Syndrome Protein SBDS Maintains Human Telomeres by Regulating Telomerase Recruitment.

Shwachman-Diamond syndrome (SDS) is a rare pediatric disease characterized by various systemic disorders, including hematopoietic dysfunction. The mutation of Shwachman-Bodian-Diamond syndrome (SBDS) gene has been proposed to be a major causative reason for SDS. Although SBDS patients were reported to have shorter telomere length in granulocytes, the underlying mechanism is still unclear. Here we provide data to elucidate the role of SBDS in telomere protection. We demonstrate that SBDS deficiency leads to telomere shortening. We found that overexpression of disease-associated SBDS mutants or
