Testosterone is the most abundant androgen in serum. Intracellularly, testosterone is converted to dihydrotestosterone, the preferred ligand for androgen receptor transactivation, by the enzyme 5α-reductase. Three 5α-reductase isozymes have been discovered and they are expressed ubiquitously in human tissues. Testosterone and dihydrotestosterone have different but complimentary functions. Dihydrotestosterone has 2-5 times higher binding affinity for the androgen receptor than testosterone, and 10-fold higher potency of inducing androgen receptor signaling than testosterone. 80 breast cyst fluids (BCF) from 57 patients were divided by K+/Na+ ratio: 56 with ratio over 1 (type I) and 24 with ratio less than 1 (type II). The sites and hormonal control of lipogenesis in hamster ear sebaceous glands are reported. Sebaceous lipogenesis was determined in ear biopsies by incubation with glucose and tracer concentrations of 14C-acetate in buffer. In male pseudohermaphrodites born with ambiguity of the external genitalia but with marked virilization at puberty, biochemical evaluation reveals a marked decrease in plasma dihydrotestosterone secondary to a decrease in steroid 5alpha-reductase activity.
