Prison systems must embrace disability rights as a human rights imperative.

For decades, India has been a staunch supporter of the human rights regime. However, lately, its positive role has been jeopardised by glaring instances of human rights violations against prisoners, especially those with disabilities. Since the edifice of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and the subsequent Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act emphasises non-discrimination and reasonable accommodation, our policies, laws, and procedures need to be aligned with the human rights model of disability. We offer insights into the current challenges and propose disability-i

Evidence-Based Interventions for Increasing Work Participation for Persons With Various Disabilities.

Title I of the Americans With Disabilities Act prohibits discrimination in employment; however, 26 years later, employment rates for persons with disabilities hover at 34%. This systematic review investigates the effectiveness of evidence-based interventions to increase employment for people with various disabilities. Forty-six articles met the inclusion criteria for evidence-based interventions. The majority of studies assessed interventions for persons with mental health disabilities. Strong evidence was found for ongoing support and work-related social skills training prior to and during co

Facial recognition 1990.

A review of recent studies of prosopagnosia suggests that the weight of evidence has shifted in favor of regarding it as a disability that can be produced by a right hemisphere lesion alone even though bilateral disease remains the more frequent anatomical basis. It is possible that prosopagnosia resulting from a right hemisphere lesion occurs only within the context of some atypical condition of the left hemisphere. "Types" of prosopagnosia continue to be postulated and the "identification of individuality" hypothesis continues to be advanced. Autonomic and covert recognition studies of proso

Knowledge and attitudes towards disability in Moldova: A qualitative study of young people's views.

BACKGROUND: People with disabilities in the Republic of Moldova continue to experience considerable discrimination and social exclusion. The Moldovan government recently affirmed their commitment to promote community integration. However, there remains limited evidence to facilitate understanding of these issues, and barriers to the integrative process. OBJECTIVE: This study explored the knowledge and attitudes towards disability of young people within Moldova. METHODS: A qualitative approach was adopted and 3 semi-structured focus group interviews were conducted with schoolchildren (n = 12)

Stress indicators in minorities with multiple sclerosis.

Black Americans with multiple sclerosis (MS) experience higher levels of disease-related disability compared to White Americans (Marrie et al., 2006). Comorbidities such as depression and anxiety, which are underdiagnosed and undertreated in this population, negatively impact quality of life and treatment outcomes for people living with multiple sclerosis (plwMS) (D'Alisa et al., 2006; Marrie et al., 2009; Stepleman et al., 2014). Acts of discrimination toward Black Americans is associated with stress, which is a contributing factor for depression (Carter, 2017; Nadimpalli, 2015; Williams and

Healthcare professionals' perceived stigmatization about direct care of COVID-19 Patients: development and validation of the discrimination about COVID-19 (DisCOV-19) instrument.

BACKGROUND: The novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a public health concern worldwide. Healthcare professionals are among the most vulnerable groups in the fight against COVID-19 because they are directly involved in the care of at-risk persons and patients with Covid-19. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to measure the level to which healthcare workers feel that they can be discriminated due to their involvement in the direct care of COVID-19 patients. METHODS: A cross-sectional online survey was conducted among healthcare professionals in Nigeria. A nineteen-item discrimination against

Smelling multiple sclerosis: Different qualities of olfactory function reflect either inflammatory activity or neurodegeneration.

BACKGROUND: Peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (pRNFL) thickness and olfactory function are both emerging biomarkers in multiple sclerosis (MS). Impairment of odor identification and discrimination is an irreversible feature of more advanced MS suggested to be associated with neurodegeneration, while olfactory threshold is a transient feature of early, active MS possibly associated with short-term inflammatory disease activity. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to validate the association of olfactory (dys)function and parameters of MS disease course in a large cohort of MS patients a

Does the disabilities of the arm, shoulder and hand (DASH) scoring system only measure disability due to injuries to the upper limb?

Although the Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand (DASH) questionnaire was designed, and has been validated, as a measure of disability in patients with disorders of the upper limb, the influence of those of the lower limb on disability as measured by the DASH score has not been assessed. The aim of this study was to investigate whether it exclusively measures disability associated with injuries to the upper limb. The Short Musculoskeletal Functional Assessment, a general musculoskeletal assessment instrument, was also completed by participants. Disability was compared in 206 participant

Genetic disease and intellectual disability as contraindications to transplant listing in the United States: A survey of heart, kidney, liver, and lung transplant programs.

Discrimination based on disability is prohibited in organ transplantation, yet studies suggest it continues in listing practices for intellectual disability and genetic diseases. It is not known if this differs between adult and pediatric programs, or by organ type. We performed an online, forced-choice survey of psychosocial listing criteria for adult and pediatric heart, kidney, liver, and lung transplant programs in the United States. Of 650 programs contacted, 343 (52.8%) submitted complete. A minority of programs had formal listing guidelines for any condition considered (Down Syndrome, D

Impact of Wartime Stress Exposures and Mental Health on Later-Life Functioning and Disability in Vietnam-Era Women Veterans: Findings From the Health of Vietnam-Era Women's Study.

OBJECTIVE: The effect of stress exposures and mental health sequelae on health-related outcomes is understudied among older women veterans. We examined a) the impact of wartime stress exposures on later-life functioning and disability in Vietnam-era women veterans and b) the extent to which mental health conditions known to be associated with stress-posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), major depressive disorder (MDD), and generalized anxiety disorder (GAD)-are associated with additional later-life functioning and disability. METHODS: Data were collected in 2011 to 2012 using a mail survey an

Reaction time and mild mental retardation: high speed scanning reexamined.

When observers judge whether a probe is contained within a small positive set, reaction time (RT) increases linearly with set size (Sternberg, 1969b). Slope and intercept of the function relating RT to positive set size are believed to reflect durations of different processing stages. As results of several investigations suggested inverse slope/intercept relationships, however, studies using "high-speed scanning" tasks to compare retarded with nonretarded individuals were reexamined. When slope was correlated with points along the RT function (intercept, Positive Set Sizes 1, 2, and 4), result

Upper-extremity disability in cervical myelopathy: insights from the Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder, and Hand questionnaire.

BACKGROUND: Assessing upper-extremity function in cervical myelopathy (CM) remains challenging because neurological scores and patient-reported disability do not always align. The Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder, and Hand (DASH) questionnaire may capture day-to-day limitations that are not fully reflected by conventional CM assessments. We evaluated the clinical utility of the DASH in CM and explored factors associated with discordant outcomes between the Japanese Orthopaedic Association (JOA) score and the DASH. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 126 patients with CM who subsequently und

Seizure disorders and developmental disorders: impact on life of affected families-a structured interview.

UNLABELLED: Seizure disorder and developmental disorder are two of the most common chronic disorders in childhood. Data on perceived parental burden and specific effects on daily life is scarce. We performed a structured interview, consecutively talking to all parents of pediatric outpatients of our university hospital diagnosed with seizure or developmental disorder. Three hundred seven parents (of 317 affected children: 53 with seizure disorder, 44 with specific developmental disorder, 35 with learning disorder, 71 with intellectual disability, 15 with seizure + specific developmental disord

Neurological impairment score in lumbar spinal stenosis.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: The Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) is an interview-based instrument generally accepted as a measure of disability in patients with lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS). There is, however, no generally accepted measure for neurological impairment in LSS. We therefore developed a scoring system [neurological impairment score in lumbar spinal stenosis (NIS-LSS)] for the assessment of neurological impairment in the lower limbs of patients with LSS, then performed a validation study to facilitate its implementation in the routine clinical evaluation of patients with LSS. METHODS: The

Emotion specificity in mental retardation.

The emotion-specificity hypothesis states that mental retardation is associated with deficits in decoding facially expressed emotions that cannot be fully accounted for by MA. Research has demonstrated repeatedly that subjects with mental retardation do not perform as well on emotion recognition tasks as do control subjects but not whether those performance deficits are specific to affective cues. The emotion-specificity hypothesis was tested further with three groups of 16 subjects: adults with mild to moderate mental retardation, similar age adults without mental retardation, and children wi

Speech perception in adult subjects with familial dyslexia.

Speech perception was investigated in a carefully selected group of adult subjects with familial dyslexia. Perception of three synthetic speech continua was studied: /a/-/e/, in which steady-state spectral cues distinguished the vowel stimuli; /ba/-/da/, in which rapidly changing spectral cues were varied; and /sta/-/sa/, in which a temporal cue, silence duration, was systematically varied. These three continua, which differed with respect to the nature of the acoustic cues discriminating between pairs, were used to assess subjects' abilities to use steady state, dynamic, and temporal cues. Acquisition of matching - to - sample performances in severe retardation: learning by exclusion.

Immediate discriminative control by spoken words was examined in a profoundly retarded, mute young man. The subject learned to select food items from a two-choice display when the food names were spoken, in a matching-to-sample format. Then a new food was presented as one choice, and a novel name was the sample. The subject selected the new food in response to the first presentation of the novel name. It appeared that the subject rejected or "excluded" the trained food which was the other alternative. This "exclusion" performance was obtained errorlessly with fourteen of sixteen new foods and

Development of a magnocellular function in good and poor primary school-age readers.

BACKGROUND: Abnormal functioning of the transient visual pathway (the M-pathway) has been implicated in specific reading disability (SRD). The aim of this study is to examine the contrast thresholds for flicker-defined form discrimination in primary school children, and to compare its development with reading and mentation development as a means of identifying children at risk of SRD. METHODS: One hundred eighty-seven children (aged 4 to 13 years) and 22 adults (aged 18 to 45 years) were assessed for contrast sensitivity to an illusory, flicker contrast-defined form (the letter 'E')--a task w

"But they are hard work": A qualitative study of the perceptions of healthcare workers in providing care to persons with disabilities in Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Healthcare workers play a central role in providing and facilitating access to healthcare for all. However, gaps in knowledge, training, and experience in disability care can limit their ability to provide inclusive care. Exploring healthcare workers' perceptions and experiences is crucial for informing the development of disability-inclusive healthcare services that are accessible, responsive, and equitable. METHODS: We conducted qualitative interviews with healthcare workers (n = 13) in Luuka district, Uganda, between September and November 2022. Interviews explored healthcare w

Disability Bias in Patient Prioritization: How Patients' Mobility Impairments Influences Prioritization to Mechanical Ventilation.

BACKGROUND: During the COVID-19 pandemic, prioritization guidelines raised concerns that disabled patients would be de-prioritized for life-saving procedures, but empirical evidence is lacking. OBJECTIVES: To examine how physicians prioritize hypothetical patients with mobility impairments and to test the association between their attitudes toward disabled people and their prioritization preferences. METHODS: Physicians and medical students completed a questionnaire comprising a vignette asking them to prioritize eight hypothetical patients needing mechanical ventilation. Each patient was de
