Smallpox continues to be a major national health concern as it poses the most serious bioterrorist threat to the US population at this time. Due to similarities in clinical presentation, smallpox may easily be confused with varicella (chickenpox) in young children. Management of a large-scale outbreak of smallpox in young children would require an intensive health care response. In addition, the current debate concerning potential revisions to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) interim guidelines for vaccination against smallpox has significant health implications for high-ri

INTRODUCTION: On Tuesday, February 22, 2011, a 6.3 magnitude earthquake struck Christchurch, New Zealand. This qualitative study explored the intensive care units (ICUs) staff experiences and adopted leadership approaches to manage a large-scale crisis resulting from the city-wide disaster.
PROBLEM: To date, there have been a very small number of research publications to provide a comprehensive overview of crisis leadership from the perspective of multi-level interactions among staff members in the acute clinical environment during the process of the crisis management.
METHODS: The research

BACKGROUND: Infection prevention and control nurses (IPCNs) are critical to preventing and controlling of healthcare-associated infections (HAIs), supporting patient safety, and responding to public health disasters. Although the significance of such a role is increasingly recognized, China lacks a unified training program or credentialing for IPCNs. We are now in a highly contrived and uncertain clinical setting that urges us to acquire a deep-seated comprehension of how we may enable IPCNs to develop their professional competence without institutionalized support. It is also necessary to ide

Mass-Gathering Medicine studies have identified variables that predict greater patient presentation rates (PPRs) and transport to hospital rates (TTHRs). This is a descriptive report of patients who presented for medical attention at an annual electronic dance music festival (EDMF). At this large, single EDMF in New York City (NYC; New York, USA), the frequency of patient presentation, the range of presentations, and interventions performed were identified. This descriptive report examined consecutive patients who presented to the medical tent of a summertime EDMF held at an outdoor venue with

At present, two etiologic varieties of viral hepatitis (VH) can be directly vaccine-preventable: VH type A and VH type B. In addition, VH type D can be prevented indirectly through vaccination against VH-B. The first commercially available vaccine against VH-B appeared in 1981 and was human plasma-derived. After several years, it has generally been replaced by a recombinant type of vaccines. The obvious benefits of vaccination against VH-B prompted its introduction into the national immunization program in Poland in 1989. At that time, vaccination was offered free of charge to high-risk groups

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death globally, with a growing impact worldwide, yet the role of environmental exposures such as geomagnetic activity (GMA) is unclear. In recent years, environmental factors such as air pollution, extreme temperatures, and natural disasters have been recognized as triggers for cardiovascular events, prompting interest in other environmental influences. Geomagnetic activity (GMA), defined as fluctuations in Earth's magnetic field driven by solar energy and charged particles, remains understudied due to challenges in its integration into epid

Little is known about the factors that may impact on the willingness of physicians and nurses to treat patients during a bioterrorism attack. This survey was conducted among 76 randomly selected nurses and physicians in the emergency rooms of three public hospitals in order to analyse the relationship between knowledge, profession and the willingness to treat anthrax. The study finds that the willingness of physicians and nurses to come to work is 50% greater among the group with the highest knowledge about anthrax (P < 0.0001). Within that group, the willingness to treat patients suspected of

Most people experience trauma at some point in their lives. The sources of trauma can include accidents, natural disasters, physical or sexual assault, combat, torture, or the death of a loved one. Experiencing or witnessing any of these, or other terrifying events, may make one susceptible to developing post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), a trauma- and stressor-related mental health condition. The common symptoms and consequences of PTSD include intrusive and distressing thoughts, memories, or flashbacks related to the traumatic event; avoidance of situations, people, or activities that re

AUDIENCE AND TYPE OF CURRICULUM: This mass casualty incident (MCI) curriculum is intended for use as refresher content in the months between more formal education, such as hands-on MCI training and drills. The target audience for each topic varies, but the majority of them apply to all disciplines such as direct patient care roles (emergency room technicians, nurses, paramedics, advanced practice practitioners, resident physicians, attending physicians, etc.) and emergency department clerks/coordinators. Topics intended for only one or more discipline are labeled as such. See curriculum chart

UNLABELLED: IntroductionInterventions to reduce disability from acute orthopedic injuries require a primary assessment of knowledge and need. There are no previous studies to assess this need in the remote provincial islands of the Philippines, an area recurrently affected by natural disaster.ProblemA preliminary assessment of orthopedic knowledge and need was performed to be expanded for regional or national implementation.
METHODS: Two independent surveys were conducted of households and mid-level providers who represent the first contact of care. The goal of the survey was to describe the

AIM: This article discusses the clinical implications of adverse health outcomes derived during heatwaves for people with mental health disorders, substance misuse and those taking prescribed medications such as lithium, various neuroleptic and anticholinergic drugs.
BACKGROUND: With climate change it is predicted that the incidence of prolonged periods of extreme heat will increase. Specific adverse health outcomes associated with high environmental temperatures include heat stroke and heat exhaustion. Those at increased risk for heat-related mortality are those with chronic health condition

Given the high prevalence of psychological complications during pandemics such as COVID-19, it is imperative to identify effective psychological interventions that can improve the mental health of patients and community members. The effectiveness of mindfulness-based intervention in discharged patients with infectious respiratory diseases, particularly during pandemics, has been examined in a limited number of studies. This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of an online Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) training program in alleviating psychological distress, depression, anxi

In general, university-based global health initiatives have tended to focus on expanding access to primary care. In the past, surgical programs may have been characterized by sporadic participation with little educational focus. However, there have been some notable exceptions with plastic surgery volunteer missions. We offer another model of regularly scheduled surgical trips to rural Haiti in plastic and general surgery. The goal of these trips is to reduce the burden of surgical disease and ultimately repair every cleft lip/palate in Haiti. Another principal objective is to accelerate the t

INTRODUCTION: Almost the entire human creativity today, from the standpoint of its efficiency and expediency, is conditioned with the existence of information systems. Most information systems are oriented to the management and decision-making, including health information system. System of health and health insurance together form one of the most important segments of society and its functioning as a compact unit. Increasing requirements for reducing health care costs while preserving or improving the quality of services provided represent a difficult task for the health system.
